John Edwards said "John Kerry has the shrapnel in his body to prove his medals."
I told my FReeper FRiend, TwoStep, that I still had a lead pencil mark in my knee, does that prove anything. She said that she had a lead pencil mark on her wrist. Just then tomnbeverly posted that she had a lead pencil mark on her arm. Pubmom chimed in that she had a lead pencil mark on her left heel.
Now, I admit, we weren't wounded in battle. Well, some wounds occurred at public schools, does that count?
Point is, just because John Kerry might have a sliver of shrapnel in his arm or leg does not mean he received it under fire.

I chipped a tooth chewing on a #2 lead pencil during my S.A.T's,does that count?
OK..
Left hand, middle finger, 7th grade (1977)
Still have the mark. Do they ever go away?
Misleading title. Thought it was a story about Clinton.
I took incoming from a paper clip-firing rubber band once. Right in the back - it stung like crazy. Can I be President now?
Left thigh. I was getting off the bus in 8th grade and the pencil stuck me through my purse.
Stop pencil whipping Mr. Kerry! :)
I am writing in for my purple heart. Have a lead pencil mark in my right hand ring finger for over 60 years.
I in turn stuck a pencil under my brother before he sat down and he has had a piece of lead in ummmmm his male parts.....
Also a very small couple of scars from where I put an X-Acto blade completely through my hand, accidentally, when the plastic bladeguard loosened and slipped back . . . . . ick. Glad it missed the nerves.
well, i got the tip of a pencil stuck in the palm of my hand in first grade, but i have to admit, it was self inflicted
Lead pencil mark on inside of left knee. Battle scar from 7th grade Social Studies class back in 1959.
I have tiny little pieces of gravel in both my right elbow and left knee. The scars will last forever, Mr. Kerry - forever.
I want my purple heart!
1. Inside right ankle (hurt for months)
2. Inside left thigh
Both about 20 years old.
Suz
Pencil lead, right knee cap.

I have a piece of gravel in my right knee, but no pencil lead anywhere.
Right palm. 1952 - I'll let you know if it ever goes away.
Palm of right hand, about an inch below thumb....4th grade....45+ years ago...No they don't go away...not the true "lead" pencil ones.....DO you suppose we're all being poisoned???????
I'm a lead pencil survivor, too! May I say, I'm proud to be in such an esteemed group, now where's my PH? I got wounded in the left palm by a bratty girl in art class. She was jealous because I could draw flies around the Grouch's garbage can. That was 4th grade and I still have my clear plastic crayon box that held two (!) boxes of 16 count crayons. It has my name and 4E (we were the advanced Excellent class, she says smugly).
In sixth grade, a guy in science class threw his pencil. It stuck in my right cheek.
It was a bit strange sitting there with a pencil sticking out of my face, but it didn't hurt. I took the pencil out, but left some lead in my cheek.
Twenty eight years later, it is still there, and you can still see where it is.
I don't know, but I bet the circumstances of how we sustained our wounds are seared in our memories.
Right palm, second grade...still visible at age 43...
Right wrist. Forgot how and when. That event wasn't seared in my memory.
No lead in my body but I grew up in Texas with a Russian name....... was called "communist" more times that I can count.......words hurt and scar....... can I get a medal now?
Inside left knee - 1960.
Palm of my right hand, circa 1967...DURING THE VN WAR!
Also have a 2-inch scar on my thigh from an asphault cleet, 1972, shortly before our troops pulled out. Needed stitches but finished the 80m hurdles with a squirt of NitroTan (Nazi coach) and a sanitary napkin taped over it.
Does that rate a "V"?
No lead pencil, but I have blacktop in my left elbow from 1979.
Where's ma' Heart?
Okay, can I now get my medal... I want the one with a 'V'.
---left index--1949---plain as day since the healing of the scar--at age 8 it probably took overnight---
My little brother stabbed me in the leg with a sharp pencil when we were kids. It didn't go in deep, but it left a dark dot there that laster over 10 years.
THIS is a family forum!
Pencil lead in my right palm. It is seared, seared I say, in my memory.
The only way I could win a fight with him was to kick him in the stomach. I got pretty good at it, too. I was the baby and had health problems, so I ALWAYS got away with everything. My poor healthy brother got blamed for EVERYTHING. He still holds a grudge today. I can live with that. LOL!
What, did the hall monitor do it to you?
Twenty years from now, we're still going to be doing "seared, seared" jokes.....
Did you hear about this joke about Kerry's windsurfing from Leno? That Kerry even does a sport that relies upon which way the wind blows?
#2 Pencil lead stab mark on my left fore arm, at 4" below the elbow. I earned it in service to Western Heights Junior High. It's been there for 35+ years. I want my purple heart.
"Western Heights Junior High?" Is that in Cambodia?
I blame the pencil. The damage lasted a long, long time.
Left thigh, and I'm 42 now. They don't ever go away.
Yep, I'm looking at mine in my right palm...fourth-grade action. It's hard to look at and type!
Puncture Wounds
Lead (graphite) from a pencil
Pencil lead (graphite) can cause a puncture wound. Pencil lead is not lead but graphite (carbon), which is less worrisome. It is not necessary to check blood levels for lead or worry about lead toxicity or poisoning if pencil lead has caused a puncture wound.
Lead that is in a fleshy area, such as the buttocks, may be left in place. Pencil lead in the hand may need to be removed by a health professional. Evaluation by a health professional is recommended anytime there is an object in a wound.
I was stabbed in the leg during 6th period Algebra class in 8th grade and I still carry a little shrapnel to this day.
LOL.....just remembered.....my brother stuck my thigh with his fork.......guess I guess I'm in for a second purple heart.
No pencil rounds to report, but I was spattered with bacon grease at the stove this morning. And it would still be there if the cat hadn't licked it off. Send medal ASAP, por favor.
