A 70-pound pit bull attacked and severely injured two men on the second floor of an off-campus student apartment complex Thursday. The two men were saved when two other men used knives and a machete to stop the dog's attack.

has PETA weighed in on this ?
Hmmm,,,send your kid off to college, we need a "to buy" list
We need microwave, books, book bag, computer, pit bull, machete.
I forgot to give mine their machetes,,oh damn.
I HATE to read articles like this... wish I hadnt... that poor animal, was raised to be that mean, and look at how he was killed... stabbed, and shot... I LOVE animals to the point of insanity, my pups mainly... theres nothing I can do to stop people from raising them to be vicious, but it still hurts me, when it has to come to this...the dog started out as sweet and precious as all little puppys are...
"I forgot to give mine their machetes,,oh damn"
ROFLMAO...
The dogs and their owner should wind up in a hole in the desert.
I dont agree with you....not all pit bulls are mean.. my neighbors have 2 that are great dogs... sweet and happy.. I think owners who raise their pets to be vicious should be shot and stabbed and the dogs humanly put to sleep......
just my opinion....
I really HOPE they catch the lunatic who owned that creature.
My guess is he/she is a drug dealer who attack trained it.
yep probably so...any dog that is trained to be vicious, will always be and needs to be humanly put to sleep...but I say, stab, beat and shoot the owner... no one that trains a dog to be that way, is humane anyways....we would be better off without them breathing fresh air...
Dog must have been upset about all those beatings the Gators have handed the Bulldogs over the past 15 years.
"...I dont agree with you....not all pit bulls are mean..."
That may be true. But not all mean pit bulls were raised wrong. Most are just mean. The odds are extremely high. It is not worth the gamble.
I used to think the same way you do. But I had an adorable 135 lb rottweiler. Sweet as can be. One day very calmly turned and bit into my thigh. Rotties have the same bite as a pitbull - same ppi and "locking." Not a good experience. I had him put down 2 hours later - I cried - but I knew it had to be done.
having survived a pit bull attack pretty unscathed, I can tell you that at least the one who attacked me was a psycho. It is owned by my wife's brother. Somehow it can not make the connect between me petting it and talking nicely, and then 10 minutes later, me walking down the hall. Tip - in a narrow hall, carry a big suitcase to hold pit bulls at bay!
you're right, about having to have your pup put down...and maybe you're right about the pit bulls... but if I had raised the dog, and it had never hurt or bothered anyone, you'd have to prove me wrong .. I've never owned one so I cant say first hand.. I have little dogs... BUT I still say, anyone that raises an animal to be vicious, has to treat the animal terrible and cruel, so to me, they dont have a soul and need to be down away with WHILE the animal is put humanly to sleep.....
like I said, just my opinion......
:)
"Pit bull attacks two university students in Gainesville,Florida"
Thanks, teacher! I saw it right after I posted it, but there is no way to make corrections. I wish there was a way? Maybe in the future Jim will give us this feature? Jim, are you listening?
Of course it did. But, unlike other dogs, Staffordshire Terriers are bred to fight. It's in their genetic makeup.
Not every pit becomes vicious, but enough do to seriously consider breeding this type of dog out of existence. They are unpredictable and cannot be trusted.
These pit attacks are happening EVERY DAY.
It wasnt raised to be mean, it's in its genes.
People who don't keep control of their pets 24/7 should not have pets as they are not responsible pet owners.
ok, I'll say "maybe" to the pit bulls, since you all have owned them.. BUT pals what my main point about the whole story is, I LOVE my pups, and even the pit bulls, deserve to be treated with love IF YOU OWN one.. if it turns to be vicious, well YOU BOUGHT it or adopted it, have it humanly put down....but for these animals to have to be brought to the "stabbed, shot, kicked" etc... I say their owners need the same thing done to them, IF they have trained the dog to be that way.....
i completely agree with you. pit bulls have the jaw strength to kill. they should not be bred and outlawed. to me, and this is one of my biggest pet peeves is to have anyone cheapen the value of life by housing an animal that can kill. I can think of no greater pain in my heart than to think of a child being mauled by an animal. Owners should face charges equivalent as if it was themselves that committed the crime. If it results in death, a murder conviction is called for. to risk human life over a selfish obsession to own one of these beasts is pathetic. I equate pit bull owners to Hummer owners , completely unnecssary but arrogant.
Two months ago, it jumped a seven foot fence and chased my wife and three dogs on leashes for a half block before she could take refuge behind a guy cutting his grass. It certainly would have killed my three dogs and might have mauled my wife.
No one, NO ONE, in a neighborhood should have a pit bull.
The "Spuds MacKenzie" dog, and the "Target" dogs are English'bulls. They are quite docile. This has more to do with the dog's owners than the dog.
amen :)
Reality check....
All dogs are sweet when they're not angry. It's what happens when they're angry that determines the viciousness. Pit Bulls are bred to go into a blind rage when angered. This means the only way they will stop once they have attacked something is when they or their target are dead.
Most dogs will back off once their target has reached a submissive state. Pit bulls do not.
This is why few if any police forces in the world use them. They simply become uncontrolable when angered.

I hate to come off as a jerk, but the only reasons to own a pit bull are if you are into fighting dogs, or you need to impress somebody with your ability to juggle a ticking time bomb.
My suggestion, get a Lab.
Just a personal note, my 20 pnd miniture blue heeler took on a hundred pound rednose pit and won, my little girl was only defending me and the pit thought it had a little snack in its sights. the big dog didnt have the agility and lost an ear in the process before the pits owner could separate them. then the owner started yelling about a lawsuit!! lol so i called the police from my cell and the owner took off, i havent seen the dog since so not really sure what happened.
It is a sin to give an animal the same stature as a human being.
>>I hate to come off as a jerk, but the only reasons to own a pit bull are if you are into fighting dogs, or you need to impress somebody with your ability to juggle a ticking time bomb.<<<
I would agree with you on one point, most of the owners are that type.. from what I've read or see on Animal Cops, on Animal Planet... dont laugh I like that show.. I LIKE to see happy happy endings for sad and neglected critters..
I only know the two next door to me....but I agree about the reasons "most" people own them.. the two next door to me are owned by a heart surgeon... IM JUST trying to say, pit bull, whatever, if it is bought as a pet, it deserves to be treated with love, UNLESS it shows a vicious side.. if so, have it humanly put down .. its awful for its life to end like the one in this story, when apparently its only known cruelty anyways...OR to ME it seems this way... I dont condone owning them, I just say BE GOOD to them if you DO own them...or have them put to sleep so their last minutes wont be so cruel...
Many ANIMALS are unpredictable . It is just , with the pit bull, an attack usually results in severe injury or even death. If a cocker spaniel snarls and charges you kick it in the head. Kick a pit bull in the head and you better have a .357 or better handy.
maybe to you.. but not to me, and I am speaking of pets here... I love mine as much as some people and more than others...
Dear ArmyBratCutie,
I will be gentle since I see you joined FR yesterday....
You will get very little sympathy in this forum for putting dogs lives before peoples. Your words that care about how a vicious dog died and not mentioning the horrible mauling these PEOPLE went through is quite telling.
A reader on this forum gets the impression that you are the type of people that doesn't have real deep relationships in their lives. THey have an inability to get close to people and turn to a relationship with an animal that can not possibly hurt you. It is safe and doesn't really envolve any emotional risk.
It makes people sad that people with that attitude are so isolated from the real world that they have an unnatural affection for an animal over a human.
Let me ask you this question.....
If a stranger was drowning and your puppy was drowning and you could only save one..... which would it be?
Hey yall,,yalll are so into the pit bull thing that you are missing the point!
Did your kids get their machetes before sauntering off to college? Where do you get a good machete for a freshman? Do graduate students get a special machete? Are they available at K-Mart and does Consumers Guide rate them? Do girls get the same ones as boys?
No , They are Bull Terriers and fairly high strung. Not as aggresive as the Staffordshire/ American pit Bull but not a beagle either.
Let's hope your cute little dogs don't end up as snack food for your neighbors pits. Btw, do you or would you let all off-leash in the same yard, or would you not take the chance?
Most of the pits that are 'vicious' in Georgia are either
a. Drug dealer owned.
b. Dog fighting trained.
c. Wackaloon Machismo Moron brutalized.
Breaks my heart to hear what people do to these animals thinking it is OK because they are "tough dogs and can take it" (To quote a coworker yesterday describing how she had her pit puppies ears cut off by a neighbor.)
what a crock!....I have plenty of people in my life...a wonderful christain family, and I was raised by a father, military officer, who is now deceased..I have a husband who is a doctor, a grown son who is an aeronautical engineer at Duke ....but I wont defend that to you... what are you some kind of dime store psyciatrist? hahahahahahahhaha no offence...The terrible mauling the people received was in the article.... all I said was I HATE to read that kind of article about an animal coming to that kind of end...cruelty shown to it, its entire life, and even to include its death... sorry, but thats the way I feel.. I HATE people who are cruel to their pets... PERIOD... and feel they should be punished and never allowed to own an animal again.....
If I am ever in the situation you described, I'll let you know who I picked......
Gainesville dog alert PING!
I'd never take that chance... and like I said, I dont condone owning these dogs, I just said IF YOU DO, they deserve to be treated with love....PERIOD...until they are shown to be otherwise....
People who blacklist a dog breed because of their closed mindedness are nothing but uneducated idiots that view things through their own tunnel vision and don't want to hear otherwise. Pit Bulls for example, are raised alot of the times by people that breed them for a specific reason- To train them to be vicious and attack dogs. Why? Because a pit bull is a stocky tough breed, that has one of the strongest jaws out of any other canine. These dogs are TRAINED this way. A pit bull puppy is not going to grow up and instantly become a vicious animal. People who think this might as well keep their heads buried in the sand.
Yep, okay if I was drowning and your dog was drowning....
I didnt miss your point...
I just dont think it was funny...
Okay! Fine with me!
The problem is that people who think this way are usually the ones who have these animals with the sole purpose of having a 'mean, tough, kick-butt dog' and they make him mean.
I have seen thems starved, beaten, cut, short-chained etc by otherwise 'decent' folks who think treating them that way was OK.
Azzhats.
You'd be surprised at how machete's are the Floridians "all purpose" tool! Used to live there---everyone has machete's.
You are a good Baptist correct? So show me a single scriptural justification for treating an animal as human. I can save you the trouble . There is none. Not a single one.Animals were created to do our bidding, provide sustenance and labor. They are not human and should never be confused with human life. Our ability to love was created so we can love God and one another. It was never intended for material things or animals. This does not however give us a justification for cruelty. Cruel behavoir is also an excluded behavoir. Self defense is not cruelty.
