CNNs Anderson Cooper Could Be in Running
New York Four CBS News staff members lost their jobs last week in the wake of an independent-panel report that found serious flaws in the journalism that led to a 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bushs National Guard service. One person who keeps his job is Dan Ratherat least until his previously announced retirement as Evening News anchor takes place in March (hell continue to report for 60 Minutes). The denouement of CBSs journalistic failure has cast a new light on the search for Rathers successor, making it more likely, in the view of some, that the network will seek an outsider for the job, TIMEs Sean Gregory reports.
The latest handicapping:
Katie Couric A network source tells TIME the Today Show co-anchor has been approached about the job. If she could be persuaded to jump, CBS would have to wait 16 monthswhen her NBC contract is up. But the network could name an old hand like Face the Nations Bob Schieffer or Early Show host Harry Smith as a caretaker until then.
Ted Koppel The Nightline kings contract ends later this year, and CBS is rumored to be interested in him. But would the ABC vet want the job? At least he wouldnt have to worry about competing with Letterman.
John Roberts CBSs chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job.
Scott Pelley The 60 Minutes Wednesday correspondent is an ace reporter, but he may have hurt himself with comments to the New York Observer that seemed to disparage Roberts.
Mika Brzezinski The CBS correspondent (and daughter of President Carters National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski) is a dark horse candidate, possibly as part of an anchor team.
Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead.
Developing...
If they want to rebuild integrity, they need John Stossel...IMHO.
I don't know how valid this list is, but it is pretty entertaining. It would be beyond riotous if they were to hire Couric. It would take her about six months before they started pining for the good old days of Rather's ratings.
CBS appears to be exercising their right to commit commercial suicide....
CBS is racing toward their grave....
RIP
Semper Fi
I might consider watching if Anderson Cooper were selected.
I agree. I fail to see how they would think that Couric couls revive their ratings. Conservatives despise her as much as Rather.
"If they want to rebuild integrity, they need John Stossel..."
Excellent choice. "Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimension." - Oliver Wendell Holmes
comrades chose comrades.
Oh, no. I don't want to give up your TS reports. LOL. What lunatic is running the show over there at CBS?
"Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead."
Rising star.... That's funny.
Stossel would be an excellent choice.
"John Roberts CBSs chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job"
Especially after his fingerprints were found in the Rathergate Memo Disaster...bye bye Roberts.
Anderson Cooper, no...will all the baggage about his personal preferences....he is out.
Katie Couric, she would be left in the dust in less than one week. They would do better with wacko Olberman. Maybe they should hire Chrissy Matthews, he is in line with their leftwing agenda.
To correct the quote: "... original dimensions." (plural)
To even consider Courik says much about CBS's grasp of the real world. The pendulum. The pendulum. Watch the pendulum, CBS. Ask not for whom the pendulum swings, CBS. It swings for you.
I'm with you. I'd actually consider watching if John Stossel was anchor, at least I feel like he tries to be a real journalist...but Couric? NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!! However, her removal from morning television would be welcomed. (Nothing like starting the day by accidentally stopping on NBC and being moved to nausea by little Katie's blatant agenda.)
Couric would just accelerate their elimination from even pretending to be a news show. They could open up the dinner hour time slot by moving the show to 7:30 in between hollywood gossip and Friends re-runs.
I thought they said they were going to be "fair and balanced."
Katie Couric anchoring the SeeBS evening news and Howard Dean as the DNC chair. That's my idea of a dream team.
Just keep digging the hole deeper libs. Pretty soon you'll be in China, as if you're not there already! Ho ho ho Chi Minh!
Only because Ethel Rosenberg is dead.
Queer Eye for the CBS News Guy
;-)
Simply because her initials are so very well agreeable for the BS in CBS.
They have to get Brit Hume, or I'm not watching.
Perky national and world news nightly!
Hey - if your ship is sinking with all hands - the guy who is treading water looks like a rising star...
Have you seen the least little hint about them caring about integrity?
Even if she did it topless, she (nor none of the others) can not stop the death spiral that confronts what CBS calls it's "news" programming. Even if it were "news," even if it were not flamming leftist, neocommunist progaganda most of the time, it can not compete with cable. As the geezers die off, CBS "news" will wither and die. It's future forgeries, extreme bias, and pranks to improve status will turn it into the National Enquirer of the airwaves before it crashes and is replaced by an hour of local news.
I second that JOHN STOSSEL!
but anyway I never trust Drudge.
Would be a good move.
SeeBS, if you're lurking, note that some dei-hard conservatives on this thread say they would watch your news if Stossel anchors. (I won't...don't have TV)
Wake up, Neanderthal News.
FMCDH(BITS)
Good to see the CBS Comedy Hour will continue.
This is a train wreck which I will bring my popcorn to.
And Pol Pot. They can't get Fidel either. He's firm that anything less than three hours of him forced on all Americans at gunpoint is a deal breaker.
THAT'll fix the liberal bias at CBS.
CBS: A wholly-owned subsidiary of the DNC.
Perhaps Helen Thomas will un-retire for them.
Couric replacing Rather. Like fixing a broken parachute with a ton of lead.
Cooper has done a great job for CNN with their tsunami coverage.
And he doesn't seem to consider himself the be all end all of news correspondents.
From what I've seen, he does straight news.
Why don't they just hire Michael Moore and get it over with?
What's that about?
Anderson Cooper, no...will all the baggage about his personal preferences....
Meaning what?
I cannot stand perky Katie
The socialist mainstream media(SMSM)is finished, doesn't matter who they hire.
No problem. I'm happy to see CBS fall flat on its face.
Now that I would watch!
With the size of the credibility hole in the CBS ship, rearranging the deck chairs will not prevent its sinking.
My sources (who haven't been correct ever) are talking about David Gregory........ They say he's younger, will be around longer. Can be contracted cheaper that other self serving gold diggers..........
Ya know, if CBS really wanted to shake things up, they'd get Don Imus.
Seriously, a great choice and a great American would be Brian Lamb. (Imus could fill in for him if need be)
Umm... no.. no...and no. She is not 20 anymore.
I've been criticized for not putting "barf alert" on titles that make people gag. You deserve the same criticism for leaving it off this Couric column. Couric as anchor? Gag me with a microphone!
