KATIE COURIC HAS BEEN APPROACHED ABOUT CBS NEWS ANCHOR JOB (Time via Drudge)

NBC NEWS TODAY SHOW CO-HOST KATIE COURIC HAS BEEN APPROACHED ABOUT CBS NEWS ANCHOR JOB, NETWORK SOURCE TELLS TIME Sun Jan 16 2005 11:00:51 ET

---

CBS Rumored to be Interested in ABC News Nightline Anchor Ted Koppel

--

CBS Rising Star Mika Brzezinski, Daughter of President Carter’s National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, is Dark Horse Candidate

--

CNN’s Anderson Cooper Could Be in Running

New York – Four CBS News staff members lost their jobs last week in the wake of an independent-panel report that found serious flaws in the journalism that led to a 60 Minutes Wednesday story about President Bush’s National Guard service. One person who keeps his job is Dan Rather—at least until his previously announced retirement as Evening News anchor takes place in March (he’ll continue to report for 60 Minutes). The denouement of CBS’s journalistic failure has cast a new light on the search for Rather’s successor, making it more likely, in the view of some, that the network will seek an outsider for the job, TIME’s Sean Gregory reports.

The latest handicapping:

Katie Couric A network source tells TIME the Today Show co-anchor has been approached about the job. If she could be persuaded to jump, CBS would have to wait 16 months—when her NBC contract is up. But the network could name an old hand like Face the Nation’s Bob Schieffer or Early Show host Harry Smith as a caretaker until then.

Ted Koppel The Nightline king’s contract ends later this year, and CBS is rumored to be interested in him. But would the ABC vet want the job? At least he wouldn’t have to worry about competing with Letterman.

John Roberts CBS’s chief White House correspondent was the early favorite and is still in the mix. But CBS insiders say the longer the search drags on, the less likely he will get the job.

Scott Pelley The 60 Minutes Wednesday correspondent is an ace reporter, but he may have hurt himself with comments to the New York Observer that seemed to disparage Roberts.

Mika Brzezinski The CBS correspondent (and daughter of President Carter’s National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski) is a dark horse candidate, possibly as part of an anchor team.

Anderson Cooper The rising CNN star (who also works for 60 Minutes Wednesday) could be in the running, especially if the long-rumored CNN-CBS merger moves ahead.

They're totally clueless. Couric is the big name and the lead in this story, but look at the whole list of who they're considering! No, there's no liberal bias at CBS!!!!

I don't know how valid this list is, but it is pretty entertaining. It would be beyond riotous if they were to hire Couric. It would take her about six months before they started pining for the good old days of Rather's ratings.

I agree. I fail to see how they would think that Couric couls revive their ratings. Conservatives despise her as much as Rather.

Especially after his fingerprints were found in the Rathergate Memo Disaster...bye bye Roberts.

Anderson Cooper, no...will all the baggage about his personal preferences....he is out.

Katie Couric, she would be left in the dust in less than one week. They would do better with wacko Olberman. Maybe they should hire Chrissy Matthews, he is in line with their leftwing agenda.

To even consider Courik says much about CBS's grasp of the real world. The pendulum. The pendulum. Watch the pendulum, CBS. Ask not for whom the pendulum swings, CBS. It swings for you.

I'm with you. I'd actually consider watching if John Stossel was anchor, at least I feel like he tries to be a real journalist...but Couric? NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!! However, her removal from morning television would be welcomed. (Nothing like starting the day by accidentally stopping on NBC and being moved to nausea by little Katie's blatant agenda.)

Couric would just accelerate their elimination from even pretending to be a news show. They could open up the dinner hour time slot by moving the show to 7:30 in between hollywood gossip and Friends re-runs.

Even if she did it topless, she (nor none of the others) can not stop the death spiral that confronts what CBS calls it's "news" programming. Even if it were "news," even if it were not flamming leftist, neocommunist progaganda most of the time, it can not compete with cable. As the geezers die off, CBS "news" will wither and die. It's future forgeries, extreme bias, and pranks to improve status will turn it into the National Enquirer of the airwaves before it crashes and is replaced by an hour of local news.

Agatha Christie comes to mind. Ten Little Indians

CBS should run a reality 'survivor' program -- last one standing gets the anchor desk.

This may play out like the Dem primary: First there were 10, then 9, then 10 again. Some dropped out, some just went nuts; and the Dems just settled for an 'anyone but Bush' candidate. CBS will end up with ABB -- Anybody but Brit.

Maybe they could entice FoxNews's Chris Wallace???????? [Dream on....]

And he doesn't seem to consider himself the be all end all of news correspondents.

From what I've seen, he does straight news.

This story is totally clueless for another reason too.

All non-CBSers named are under contract elsewhere. There will be no "interim" 16-month anchor. Demographics will drive a younger while male.

The pencil geek who wrote is simply reporting rumors.

CBS and super-agent Kenny Leibner will "decide" who the replacement will be.. and that will be that.

In many ways it will be meaningless, because within 60 months, TV network news as we know it will be gone.
