Pit bull on the loose fatally attacks horse in Boring
12:19 PM PST on Friday, February 18, 2005
BORING, Ore. -- A horse owner in Boring was forced to have her Appaloosa euthanized after a neighbor's pit bull attacked the 28-year-old animal, authorities said.

James Asboe.
The attack occurred last Friday when the dog walked out of its owner's yard, said Clackamas County deputy Joel Manley.
The horse, which had been part of owner Gloria Serhan's family for nearly three decades, suffered multiple lacerations to its head, face and legs, including deep punctures on several parts of its body, according to Manley.
He said authorities have not brought any charges against dog owner James Asboe, 26, who has been previously arrested for DUIs.
The three-year-old male pit bull, Cruiser, was neither tied up nor locked in the yard, Manley said. In fact, the gate to the yard was open, allowing Cruiser to run around freely and enter the pasture where the horse was.
When James Asboe's father, Mike Asboe, saw Cruiser attack the horse, he tried to intervene.
"He got the dog off the horse," Manley said, but by that point it was too late.
Cruiser is currently being held at Clackamas County Animal Control. A hearing to determine the dog's fate was scheduled for March 8th.
James Asboe lives with his father in the 23410 block of SE Blueridge Dr. in Boring.

Nobody who has a DUI should be allowed to own a large dog. People who can't control themselves are hardly likley to be able to control an animal.
PITBULLAPALOOZA!
I think the evidence speaks for itself about the BC's.... surely they're not the only ones who are being trained...they just win the most trials, is all!
Same thing here. I notice you frequently post these "pit bull - kill" stories. Seems like an unmistakable pattern. The fact that so many come on these threads to defend such a violent breed.....shew! just proves how different we all are.
I had to put down a 7mos old filly once, injured while being chased by a dog.
28 year old horse.... poor old guy.
I had a little trouble with a playful neighbor dog... he'd chase, the horses would chase him. In his case, he was so timid I was actually more concerned the dog would be hurt than the horses. I fixed it with more hotwire on his side, lower to the ground.

This is a guy with a bad dog... but that's so silly it's laughable. Lets just picture a moment in a world where you're in charge.... what else can't we do?
I just noticed how ironic your name is....
"I think the evidence speaks for itself about the BC's.... surely they're not the only ones who are being trained...they just win the most trials, is all!"
Which trials?
Bump
Am I wrong to hate dog owners who don't train their dogs? Soon we are moving and I will be away from the monsters that are on my property but there will always be others.
I literally have come to hate dogs. They make my horse-loving life miserable. Dogs and horses do not mix.
The idea of a dog actually attacking a horse though, instead of just teasing or chasing it, is really weird. Scary. The old Appaloosa must have been sickly and/or weak or I'd think he'd have been able to take out a pitbull with a couple of well-placed kicks.
Is there not an animal control service in your area that you can complain to about the dogs? If the dogs are scaring you, take a gun!
I wouldn't plan to shoot from your horse unless you have taken that on as a ~horse~ training issue.
Do the dogs belong to neighbors? What do they do?
whew ... ugly looking human. Feel very, very sorry for the horse.
Sometimes I think they sic the dogs on me on purpose. So far two dogs have been poisoned on this property that have belonged to other boarders and one simply "disappared." The Dog from hell belongs to the owners boyfriend. The dog lays in wait.
There's nothing I can do. If I want to go riding on the land I have a friend come walk along side me to fend off the monster. The downside of shooting a gun is of course I havent trained my horse for the occasion. Besides I dont particularly want to kill a dog for the stupidity of its owner. I dont want to kill any animal. I just expect that when the owner isnt around the stupid thing is chained up.
I dont think there is a way to dog proof your horse from an attacking dog or even a lunging one for that matter. Some are just doing what comes naturally, like chasing the wheels of a car. Sometimes the dog gets RUN OVER BY THE CAR. Stupid owners.
I cant call animal control because I'm on their property. So technically they can let their dogs run, however if I ever got hurt or killed from their carelessness I wonder how the law would look upon their stupidity. (How foreseeable that a dog running loose would create an accident for a rider on horseback, on their property. But as I said these people are ignorant as dirt. We are in the process of buying our own land but still these dogs come out of nowhere, All shapes and sizes. Isnt there some law that prohibits dogs from running wild? After all, it's not just horses they attack. It's people also. Although it seems that horses are their "entertainment" of choice.
I understand your concern between mixing pit bulls and horses. I am a horse trainer and often have the problem with wild dogs. Not pit bulls, but in fact coyotes. What did I do to fix the problem? My pit bull comes to work with me and often enjoys long walks down the trails, walking along side my buckskin gelding Dylan. Deuce and Dylan are best friends it seems. They run in the corral together and sometimes sleep together. Although the story in mind is a tragic, there are other ways aside from guns to ward off the animals.
I wasnt even talking about a pit bull. The dog that was menacing me was a lab. (We've since moved, thank god.) Poorly trained dogs and horses don't mix. If you have any better ideas on how to ward off an attacking animal you should share it.
