"Republic of Texas" Again Pushes for Independence
WOAI.Com (San Antonio) ^ | LAST UPDATE: 2/24/2005 11:04:56 AM | Posted By: Jim Forsyth

The separatist Republic of Texas group, which largely dissolved after an abortive uprising in the Davis Mountains left several of its leaders dead or in prison in 1997, has reformed, and is again pushing its message that Texas should be a free and independent nation, 1200 WOAI news reported today.

From a newly established 'capitol' in the east Texas town of Overton, Daniel Miller, President of the Republic of Texas Interim Government, says a desire to be free, combined with ballooning concerns over rising taxes and property rights, will convince more Texans to support a 'referendum' on whether Texas should become an independent nation.

"We're seeking a referendum to allow the people of Texas to vote on independence," Miller said. "We're looking forward to the benefits of Texas independence, where Texas stands as a nation among other nations."

Texas was a republic from 1836 until joining the United States in December of 1845, in a move that helped spark the Mexican War. Texas joined the Confederate States of America in 1861, and talk of independence has surfaced off and on since the end of the Civil War, although no reputable historian or political scientists expects the event will ever occur.

"There are many reasons why Texas would be better off as a republic," Miller said. "One of our biggest problems right now is school finance, and we don't have enough money to keep our schools solvent. Yet we send $129 billion to Washington D.C. annually for them to spend on projects that don't really affect Texas. We feel that if we could keep that money here at home we could solve all of our problems."

He says Texas is currently the eighth largest economy in the world, and second largest on a per capita basis..

"An independent Texas would be an economic powerhouse worldwide."

Led by self proclaimed "Ambassador" Richard McLaren, several people claiming to represent the Republic of Texas Organization took two hostages in remote Fort Davis. The resulting standoff left two Republic of Texas sympathizers dead and McLaren and several followers are serving lengthy prison terms for their roles in the incident.

In the weeks leading up to the standoff, McLaren had been attaching frivolous write and liens to the property of opponents, sympathizing with the 'militia' and 'freemen' movements which sprung up following the Branch Davidian siege in Waco in 1993, and even issuing $1.8 billion in phony financial documents. The new Republic of Texas movement condemns these actions and says its movement is purely peaceful and political.

"Texas independence is not some fringe movement, nor is it reactionary," Miller says. "We are simply living out trends that are happening around the world. If you look at the past twenty years there have been in excess of thirty nations which have been formed. There is a trend worldwide toward independence and decontrol, and we think it's high time that the trend came to Texas."

Oh good, Domestic Terrorists. Why don't they join The Free State Project and remove a Blue State from the Union?

These aren't the same people. The ones involved in that kidnapping were nothing more than Terrorists and Thugs.

I have no problem at all with someone wanting an Independant Nation. Let them convince their voters and population that it's a good thing peacefully and within current law.

Anything other than that is, as has already been stated, Terrorism.

We don't have ballot initiatives in Texas..how do these dingbats hope to get a vote on secession?

As I recall from growing up there, they’re legally allowed to break up into 5 states as a condition on inclusion into the US. I doubt that there’s any secession clause.

Texas Rangers. Their teeth were pulled long ago. They mainly investigate white collar and voting crime in counties to poor to have resources to do so efficiently. Gone are the days of the mystic they use to have. Only about 5 of the 80 or so odd Rangers owns a horse anymore.

We used to tell Ranger jokes ( like Aggie jokes ). We call their fancy .45 rigs bar-b-que guns and joke they replaced them with tongs in theier holster so when they hunkered around the camp fire they could reach the brisket.

"These aren't the same people."

FYI

In early '96 the original tax protest group was showing a video of the Waco battle of the year prior. This was at the Harvey Hotel at DFW Airport. Since most of the leaders were killed, the tape vanished from public.

I keyed up Alamo Girl years ago incase the tape shows up at any gun show.

Texas isn't the onlt state with secessionist moonbats. There was a time when New York City wanted to simply be independant as some sort of city-state (like Singapore). There were also people who wanted independance for Key West (as the "Conch Republic". I believe there was a group advocating secession in Vermont.

They did have a secession clause for a short time prior to the Civil War. The war and their surrender nullified any previous agreements and it is doubtful that they would have been honored in any case by the US.

As I understand it, the treaty that had Texas become a state of the US also gives it permission to break up into up to 5 states at its choice. Should the legislature decide to do this and the US Congress refuse to allow it, the treaty would have been abrogated by the US and Texas would revert to the status quo ante, an independent country. Secession wouldn't be necessary. Oh, and considering that Texas was considerably larger when it joined the union than it is now, a case could be made for it assuming it's original boundaries.

Maybe Texas's secession during the Civil War abrogated the treaty and it's no longer in effect, I don't know.

I'd be fine with all of those places seceding. It would mean fewer socialists in the U.S. pushing for high taxes, queer marriage and enviro-nut property laws, respectively.

You would be wrong.

As would you.

We cannot secede. Period. The US Constitution states that (and the TX Constitution doesn't- although it wouldn't matter anyway because of the Supremacy Clause). The whole issue of splitting into more than one state revolved around the contentious issue of slavery- "free states" vs. "slave states"- and the clause was allowed to appease both sides on the issue.

BTW, just for everyone's info... it is NOT legal for Texans to fly our flag at the same level as the US flag, as another urban legend goes.

I am TX born and TX proud, but I love the USA also and sometimes a line has to be drawn, no pun intended.

Yup. Some friends were discussing this and we came up with names for the new states.

The San Antonio area would be 'Newer New Mexico'. DFW Would be Cowboy Land. Austin would be the Peoples Republic of Texas. East Texas would be called West Louisiannastan. And West Texas and the panhandle would be WillyNelsonia. Maybe it sounds better with a few beers perviously administered.

Thats true but also Congress would not get to set gas rates cheaper in the Eastern states than the state (Texas) that produced the natural gas. In the early 80's they imposed a 20-40 percent windfalls profits tax that decimated the state. The number of oil rigs dropped from 3000 to less than 13 in a year and the Governor of Texas dynamited his own wells rather than pay the tax. Congress expected a big windfalls tax to spend but all they did was break all of the small producers and the big ones left. This was pushed big time by northeast Democrats. So much for their logic.
