The separatist Republic of Texas group, which largely dissolved after an abortive uprising in the Davis Mountains left several of its leaders dead or in prison in 1997, has reformed, and is again pushing its message that Texas should be a free and independent nation, 1200 WOAI news reported today.
From a newly established 'capitol' in the east Texas town of Overton, Daniel Miller, President of the Republic of Texas Interim Government, says a desire to be free, combined with ballooning concerns over rising taxes and property rights, will convince more Texans to support a 'referendum' on whether Texas should become an independent nation.
"We're seeking a referendum to allow the people of Texas to vote on independence," Miller said. "We're looking forward to the benefits of Texas independence, where Texas stands as a nation among other nations."
Texas was a republic from 1836 until joining the United States in December of 1845, in a move that helped spark the Mexican War. Texas joined the Confederate States of America in 1861, and talk of independence has surfaced off and on since the end of the Civil War, although no reputable historian or political scientists expects the event will ever occur.
"There are many reasons why Texas would be better off as a republic," Miller said. "One of our biggest problems right now is school finance, and we don't have enough money to keep our schools solvent. Yet we send $129 billion to Washington D.C. annually for them to spend on projects that don't really affect Texas. We feel that if we could keep that money here at home we could solve all of our problems."
He says Texas is currently the eighth largest economy in the world, and second largest on a per capita basis..
"An independent Texas would be an economic powerhouse worldwide."
Led by self proclaimed "Ambassador" Richard McLaren, several people claiming to represent the Republic of Texas Organization took two hostages in remote Fort Davis. The resulting standoff left two Republic of Texas sympathizers dead and McLaren and several followers are serving lengthy prison terms for their roles in the incident.
In the weeks leading up to the standoff, McLaren had been attaching frivolous write and liens to the property of opponents, sympathizing with the 'militia' and 'freemen' movements which sprung up following the Branch Davidian siege in Waco in 1993, and even issuing $1.8 billion in phony financial documents. The new Republic of Texas movement condemns these actions and says its movement is purely peaceful and political.
"Texas independence is not some fringe movement, nor is it reactionary," Miller says. "We are simply living out trends that are happening around the world. If you look at the past twenty years there have been in excess of thirty nations which have been formed. There is a trend worldwide toward independence and decontrol, and we think it's high time that the trend came to Texas."
Moonbats...They dirty up the name of The Republic of Texas.
Texas is now running the U.S., so why do they want to secede?
yeah. kidnapping etc. is a great way to win friends and influence allies in your cause.
"From a newly established 'capitol' in the east Texas town of Overton, Daniel Miller, President of the Republic of Texas Interim Government..."
East Texas...hmmm. Ok, let's give it to Louisiana.

These aren't the same people. The ones involved in that kidnapping were nothing more than Terrorists and Thugs.
I have no problem at all with someone wanting an Independant Nation. Let them convince their voters and population that it's a good thing peacefully and within current law.
Anything other than that is, as has already been stated, Terrorism.
Let's just give Texas to Mexico. Their official language is already Spanish, isn't it?

I found this by googling...I hope they aren't going to print their own money and pull the stunts they did last time..filing civil suits on officials, tying up courts, committing crimes.
We don't have ballot initiatives in Texas..how do these dingbats hope to get a vote on secession?
Nah, this is all backwards. We let the US join us and typical of friendly Texans we let the US keeps it's name:)
cripes why cant like Vermont and RI secede instead of Texas
I would say let Mass secede but i work there :)
DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS
I'm glad to see a Californian finally acknowledge this. LOL.
well I don't know how nuts this group is, but it sounds as though Texans have a nice strong libertarian streak in them. They should take over New York.
I can see you're not from Texas....
As I recall from growing up there, theyre legally allowed to break up into 5 states as a condition on inclusion into the US. I doubt that theres any secession clause.
Texas Rangers. Their teeth were pulled long ago. They mainly investigate white collar and voting crime in counties to poor to have resources to do so efficiently. Gone are the days of the mystic they use to have. Only about 5 of the 80 or so odd Rangers owns a horse anymore.
Better Texas run the country than California. :-)
We used to tell Ranger jokes ( like Aggie jokes ). We call their fancy .45 rigs bar-b-que guns and joke they replaced them with tongs in theier holster so when they hunkered around the camp fire they could reach the brisket.
There's a thought...Rather than move toward independence, Texans should invade and occupy the rest of the US.
FYI
In early '96 the original tax protest group was showing a video of the Waco battle of the year prior. This was at the Harvey Hotel at DFW Airport. Since most of the leaders were killed, the tape vanished from public.
I keyed up Alamo Girl years ago incase the tape shows up at any gun show.
Joining the Union may have been a mistake, but we made a deal and need to stick to it.

" I doubt that theres any secession clause."
You would be wrong.
Texas isn't the onlt state with secessionist moonbats. There was a time when New York City wanted to simply be independant as some sort of city-state (like Singapore). There were also people who wanted independance for Key West (as the "Conch Republic". I believe there was a group advocating secession in Vermont.
TEXAS, It's a whole nother country.
I love your graphic...
My ancestors were here for the Texas Revolution, also for the American Revolution..I believe you will not find a person more Texas Proud than I..but I love the United States of America.."warts" and all(sorry, blue states)

Texas receives almost as much back from the Feds in tax dollars as it sends in. An independent Texas wouldn't be better off fiscally, at least not in this regard.
No, I'm not from Texas. I do live in a state infested with Texans though (Colorado).
Why are you knocking the Free Staters up in New Hampshire? I've heard Dr. Walter Williams heap praise on them while watching C-SPAN one day, so that's good enuff for me.
That's my neck of the woods. We ain't givin' nobody nutin'.
As I understand it, the treaty that had Texas become a state of the US also gives it permission to break up into up to 5 states at its choice. Should the legislature decide to do this and the US Congress refuse to allow it, the treaty would have been abrogated by the US and Texas would revert to the status quo ante, an independent country. Secession wouldn't be necessary. Oh, and considering that Texas was considerably larger when it joined the union than it is now, a case could be made for it assuming it's original boundaries.
Maybe Texas's secession during the Civil War abrogated the treaty and it's no longer in effect, I don't know.
I'd be fine with all of those places seceding. It would mean fewer socialists in the U.S. pushing for high taxes, queer marriage and enviro-nut property laws, respectively.
As would you.
We cannot secede. Period. The US Constitution states that (and the TX Constitution doesn't- although it wouldn't matter anyway because of the Supremacy Clause). The whole issue of splitting into more than one state revolved around the contentious issue of slavery- "free states" vs. "slave states"- and the clause was allowed to appease both sides on the issue.
BTW, just for everyone's info... it is NOT legal for Texans to fly our flag at the same level as the US flag, as another urban legend goes.
I am TX born and TX proud, but I love the USA also and sometimes a line has to be drawn, no pun intended.
aha! That explains it!
Yeah, California should secede, not Texas
This one's for you, guys;
The Zavala Flag
First official flag of the Texas Republic
Adopted at the Texas Independence Convention of 1836
"No, I'm not from Texas"
How sad for you.
Yup. Some friends were discussing this and we came up with names for the new states.
The San Antonio area would be 'Newer New Mexico'. DFW Would be Cowboy Land. Austin would be the Peoples Republic of Texas. East Texas would be called West Louisiannastan. And West Texas and the panhandle would be WillyNelsonia. Maybe it sounds better with a few beers perviously administered.
Maybe you are from Tx and don't know it. Half of New Mexico and a significant part of Colorado were part of the original Rep of Tx.
Who knew words of wisdom like that could be found on a bathroom stall?
