Some of the leading Atlanta families are Jewish. Several of the old Southern Jewish families were prominent in the Confederacy. They pretty much have entree anywhere around here, at least with the folks that matter. Some old Italian money here too, think they came here from New Orleans.
Don't even get me started on the pecking order in New Orleans. You need a scorecard.
Is the Guggenheim family descended from German-Jewish immigrants who came to America long before the mass immigration of Eastern-European Jews? I've read somewhere that there was a lot of friction between the established German Jews and the later Eastern-European Jewish immigrants in NY and elsewhere...
In NYC the "Old Jewish Money" was mostly German Jews who arrived pre-1880s.The Old black money arrived pre-Civil War, but wasn't as snobby up on Sugar Hill.
Ha! You beat me to it. Yeah, the Old Jewish Money was horrified at the masses of immigrants. They were also different in physical appearance. The German Jews tended to be tall and patrician looking. The immigrants, because of poor diet, poverty etc., were short, squat etc.
Now that's funny!
Sorry but who really gives a rat's a$$!
The Old Black Money -- Sugar Hill etc. -- tended to be very fussy and given to precise manner of dress and speech. They too were mortified by the influx of "immigrants" from the South.
It was a pretty good slap at effete Old Money weaklings, except that real Old Money is rural, not Manhattan as in this story. Horses and boats and dogs. Horses and boats and dogs.
That, however, is a pretty "nouveau rich" American definition itself.
For real snobbery, you would have to go to Europe where they would want to know since which Century had your family been inheriting wealth.
Any date after the French Revolution would be considered "nouveau rich".
I am sympathetic to these multi-millionaire co-op clubs, and their desire to keep away the Hollywood trash from their cultured environs. They have every right to enforce their own prejudices, however draconian they may seem, over potential buyers. There is a certain under-stated elegance that they are trying to preserve at these locations, and keeping out ostentatious Hollywood sluts and fashion-industry faggots is a good way to do this.
That's true, but the leading southern Jewish families are in Chawston.
It's interesting because it combines three NYC obsessions:
Money, history and real estate.
There still is some snobbery, although today it's more of a joke than anything serious. Funny line in Fully Committed on this. Not many people got it, but it was a lousy audience the night I went.
You don't know any of them, do you?
"I'm America's worst nightmare -- white trash with money.".....Roseanne Barr
When I bought land in northwest Montana, I was definitely "looked over", since I also reside in California. Fortunately, I grew up in the upper midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin) and agreed to meet the real estate agent on the lot in mid-January...
Old money, right background, right education, right wife...he would have been accepted if he hadn't run for president. Politicians are generally eschewed, with few exceptions. Remember, these are the same people who nixed Nixon for an apartment.
Charleston was Charles Town when Atlanta was nonexistent (The City of Decatur, just to the east, long predates that jumped-up railroad town).
Talking about internecine feuds, the contempt of the old German Jewish families for the Eastern European immigrants has nothing on the feelings of a true old-time Atlanta M.O.T. for a recent arrival from Brooklyn!
I know a couple that lives in this area. They have every right to dictate who they share their elevators/lobby/etc. with, just as HOAs have the right to dictate rules and covenants. I see nothing wrong in their desire to control their environment and the quality of people that move into it.
