Does this empty promise of the amnesty/deportation trade-off sound familiar? Why, yes, yes it does. Let me boil it down to fundamentals: Bush-Kennedy amnesty is the J. Wellington Wimpy plan:
"I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
Amnesty is the hamburger. Enforcement is the payment that will never come. I've reported this reality over and over and over and over and over again. All the leaked memos and graphs and analysis in the world, however, cannot sum up the deportation/enforcement/border security sham--and the mess at DHS--more clearly than the reality expressed by an illegal alien quoted by the Associated Press today:
"If I get deported and need to cross the border again, that's not a problem," he said.
It was true in 1986. It's as true as ever in 2007. Wimpy will get his amnesty burgers and the Beltway fools who keep deluding themselves about the false promise of immigration enforcement will be left empty-handed. Again.

How about benchmarks for the immigration bill? Benchmarks include a fence, real ID cards, payment of back taxes and cleansing our jails of all illegal felons before major parts of the bill are implemented.
>>Benchmarks include a fence,<<
Already passed a bill for that. The new amnesty bill says “We will promise to build half of the fence we already approved,” or maybe Chertoff will say “That’s good enough,” taking advantage of one of the many loopholes in the bill.
>>real ID cards,<<
The “pilot employee verification problem” is not ready for prime time. The system is saying that legitimate residents are illegal, and does not detect illegals using false SS numbers. Also, employers don’t have to use the system if they don’t want to.
>>payment of back taxes<<
Not any more. Bush announced that would be too hard on them. That’s on another thread.
>>and cleansing our jails of all illegal felons before major parts of the bill are implemented.<<
They have no idea which ones are illegal, because the regulations won’t let us keep track.
Someone needs to write a column about this idea of benchmarks.

Bad to Worse [Kate O’Beirne]
Analysts at the Heritage Foundation have the current legislative text of the immigration deal and are alarmed at provisions they view as dangerous loopholes. They point out that once the bill is signed its language appears to create a “cease and desist” order on law enforcement given what looks like a prima facie assumption that any illegal alien is eligible for amnesty and can therefore be given preliminary legal status. Under the “Treatment of Application” section, once an application for the new “Z” visa has been filed, it appears that the government has only “one business day” to identity a disqualifying factor or the visa must be issued. And lots of provisions are apparently able to be waived by Cabinet secretaries so there’s plenty of discretion for the next Clinton administration.

GOP Sellout: A senseless giveaway on immigration
by Brian Darling
“Sellout.” It may be harsh, but its the most accurate and succinct way to sum up how conservatives feel right now about President Bush and Senate Republicans, who have cut a deal that would grant amnesty to the estimated 12 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. not to mention the parents, spouses, and children of these illegals.
Title VI of a draft copy of the bill breaks down amnesty visas into three categories:
Z-1 Illegal aliens present and working in the United States up to Jan. 1, 2007.
Z-2 Parents and spouses of illegal aliens qualifying under the Z-1 category.
Z-3 Children of illegal aliens qualifying under the Z-1 category.
These “Z Visa” holders can stay in the “Z” status indefinitely, which means they never have to pursue “a pathway to citizenship.” They also would be able to get Social Security numbers and benefit from some welfare programs. Shockingly, there is no cap on the numbers of amnesty recipients in the draft language. The only thing the Z Visa holder cant do is vote until, that is, a liberal judge declares this limitation unconstitutional or until a liberal president can railroad through a “technical corrections” bill.
Notwithstanding all you are going to hear to the contrary from President Bush, Sen. John McCain, and their new ideological partner, Sen. Ted Kennedy, Title VI of this bill is amnesty, plain and simple. According to an op-ed by former attorney general Ed Meese that appeared last year in the New York Times discussing the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, “the difference is that President Reagan called this what it was: amnesty. Indeed, look up the term amnesty in Blacks Law Dictionary, and youll find it says, the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act provided amnesty for undocumented aliens already in the country.” It was amnesty then, and its amnesty now.
Why would Republicans negotiate with Ted Kennedy, a senator with impeccable credentials with the far Left of the immigration movement? And why would John McCain imperil his wobbly campaign for the presidency by allying himself with a Kennedy-drafted immigration bill? It simply defies common sense.
Some of these Republicans, I believe, have convinced themselves that they can convince the American people that “triggers,” “tough border enforcement,” and the Y Visa “temporary guest worker program” were concessions from the Left that balance out the amnesty part of the bill. Unfortunately, theyre wrong. And Senator McCains prospects to woo conservatives will suffer dearly.
The prospect of amnesty for illegal immigrants and their families outweighs any tough border initiative that may be in the bill, or the get-tough employment-enforcement provisions. All that will matter, if the bill passes, is that President Bush and presidential wannabe John McCain enabled and are responsible for a historic giveaway for a program that grants amnesty to millions of illegal aliens who are being rewarded for breaking the law.
In the name of bipartisanship, they have given away the farm to Ted Kennedy and the left wing of the Democrat party in the Senate. I cant imagine any self-respecting conservative in America who would not hold this against McCain, Bush, and any other politician who supports this terrible idea.

Sadly, Tony Snow is Wrong and Lindsey Graham is a Liar.
UPDATED: Several people say what I have below is false because the Z-1 Vis costs $1000.00., which will be called a fine. Multiple Senate staffers tell me it is up in the air still as to whether that $1000.00 will have to be paid during the Z-1 application phase. Likewise, illegal aliens can get the Z-1 visa, renew it in perpetuity, and never pay any fines.
“Well, again, you know, amnesty is this term that people want to throw around rather than reading the bill and making the arguments. Senator DeMint, whom I like a lot, he’s just flat wrong on this. He’s not even close to right. White House spokesman Tony Snow responding to those who say the immigration reform bill is amnesty. (CNN Lou Dobbs, May 17, 2007)
Likewise, Lindsey Graham said it’s not amnesty and attacked Jim DeMint for daring to say it was.
Actually, the Senate plan is amnesty. According to the dictionary, amnesty is “an undertaking by the authorities to take no action against specified offenses or offenders during a fixed period.” According to the Senate plan, while illegal aliens will have to pay an $8000.00 (or is it $4000.00?) fine over 5 years if they apply for a green card, there will be no such fines if they apply for a “Z” Visa.
Under the proposed plan, an illegal alien can apply for a “Z” Visa without paying any penalties, and renew the “Z” visa in perpetuity. So, they get to stay here, pay no fine, and suffer no penalty for breaking the law.
And if they do apply for a green card, they pay their fine over 5 years, but don’t have to pay back taxes or anything else.
Sounds like amnesty to me.

The Senate will next convene at 1:00 pm Monday, May 21st.
At 1:00 pm, the Senate will resume consideration of the motion to proceed to S. 1348, the Immigration bill, and Senator Sessions will be recognized to speak for up to 3 hours. The remaining time until 5:30 pm will be equally divided. At 5:30 pm, the Senate will vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to S. 1348.
But it worked so well in 1986!

Anyway, the point to this post is that the management of Wimpy's had a fix to the problem regarding the famous "I will gladly pay you Tuesday, for a hamburger today" quote... They were closed on Tuesdays. So, no free burgers!

Bill O’Reilly and the pro-amnesty crowd keep quoting $5000, which is spin intended to hide the fact that it is amnesty. I also read that agricultual workers can pay only $100. Since they will not provide the text of the bill, it makes it difficult to see what is going on.
Ironic, this spin from the so-called “No Spin Zone.” LOL.

Please FReepmail me if you would like to be added to, or removed from, the Michelle Malkin ping list...
Not to mention the mileage Bill gets by having Geraldo come on to wave his arms and present the Aztlan side of the discussion - presumably to make O'Reilly seem middle of the road.
(Last night Gerry actually pointed out that Los Angeles was originally pronounced Lows Anghaleese - suggesting that reconquesta is a mandate)
Sorry, so what do we do? Can you remove it from News/Activism and leave it in amnesty and aliens?
And 1965 !!!!

O’Reilly might have good intentions, but he is very obviously ignorant about this amnesty bill.
Heck, regardless how much it costs for amnesty, illegal alien employers will pick up the tab.
If an American will do a job for 20K per year, and an illegal will command 10K....you bet the alien employers will front the amnesty kickback. Still saves them 5K
The only hint of the silver lining on this immensely black cloud is that once the illegals get amnesty, the price of their labor will go up because they'll be able to freely move between employers. The people who will be hurt the worst immediately will be those employers who will see their labor costs skyrocket... unless they fire all the Z-1 employees and hire new illegals who just crossed the border.
Also, will there be any penalty for companies that have hired illegals for the past 20 years? Or will this bill give them amnesty too without any fines at all?

We already have laws regarding illegal aliens that the government refuses to enforce. We cannot trust our own government - and there seems to be too much frenzy and too much secrecy regarding this bill.

Thanks for the ping Ali.
Great info.
Living in a city with over 1 million legal and illegal Mexicans and 20 miles N. from the border,
I can’t begin to tell how I feel with this
scam of a bill.
Those in flyover country don’t have a clue where we have been headed and now this is the final blow.
I am glad I am old enough to remember my country as it was.
My country is gone.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Exactly.
If Congress passed a law today saying all illegals will be deported and not be eligible for any further immigration benefits, I would not celebrate. It's a joke. We didn't enforce our immigration laws prior to 9/11, we aren't enforcing the majority of the new laws passed after 9/11, what makes anyone think we will enforce anything passed now or in the future!
