What a well written essay, LS!

When the elder Bush reached over with tears in his eyes and grabbed the hand of his son, I did have the feeling that the torch was being passed and that the son was now to carry forth the burden of protecting our country.

(A burden which Clinton never assumed BTW).

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble of praise, but he NEVER said 'Jesus' during the debates. I watched it very close. He DID say "...accepting Christ...as my personal Savior...", but he never said "Jesus".

Now I am FULLY aware this is going to get me Flamed beyond belief....but I have have stated something that is true.

The Bible says "...at the name of JESUS every knee shall bow..." And George Bush did not say "Jesus" during the debates. I did hear him say it in interviews both prior and after. I DO believe he is a man of God, but I WAS disappointed during the debates to hear him use a generic term for Jesus. I'm sure it was difficult for him to NOT say 'Jesus', but I'm also pretty sure that his advisors TOLD HIM not to.

Flame away, but I WATCHED the debates CLOSELY to see if he was the kind of christian I expect him to be.

I am saddened by the fact that Mr. Bush has to deal with this tragedy. (But then again, we all are.) But if there is any consolation, it is this : We don't have Al Gore responding by murdering and twisting Biblical quotes like he has in the past.

Haven't you noticed that when GEorge W. quotes the Bible, he does it from MEMORY? (and not from a tele-prompter)

You're a man of letters, aren't you?

Is this good, or what?

but he NEVER said 'Jesus' during the debates

Not to quibble, but George W. Bush named the name of Jesus not only on public TV (perhaps not during the debates), but in print. In A Charge to Keep, he gives strong testimony to his faith in Jesus Christ.

But that weekend my faith took on new meaning. It was the beginning of a new walk where I would recommit my heart to Jesus Christ, p. 136.

He also talked, in an interview with Britt Hume, about his answer to the question during the primaries as to who was his favorite philosopher.... "Jesus Christ, because he changed my heart," and said it was a spontaneous response about how he really felt (even though it got him in political hot water).

Sorry you were disappointed in the debates, but the man is an unashamed follower of Jesus Christ.

I remember something he said at the convention:

"We have the chance to grow up before we grow old."

Now is our time. Those of us who coasted through an idyllic 50's childhood, who came of age in the indulgent 60's and 70's, who have coasted through life without shouldering any responsibilities, now must bear the weight of the nation. We will prove to the world that we are not the indulged baby-boomers or the cynical slackers. We must rise to the challenge and defend our nation.

The commitment of our fathers is the calling of our time.

Thanks for the flag, sinkspur.

Well - this brought on my first crying spell of this new day. (I've had many, many crying spells since Tuesday--actually, almost every day since my oldest son went off to college 2 weeks ago - but that's another story)

Thank you so much - beautiful!!
