Bump for a number of fine organizations. If one has a boat or marine radio join the US Coast Guard Auxillary one can help the Coast Guard do its job by taking some of the Search and Rescue load off their shoulders.

Thanks for the list above! I'd like to get involved as a civilian, but what can I do? Can you list what each civilian org does above to give me an idea?

Yes, I recently submitted my application to join the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 29. They need crewmen and radio watch operators. Currently they are assisting the CG in patrolling Long Beach/LA harbors. It's believed the patrols will significantly increase in the San Onofre Nuclear Facility area. The CG is stretched beyond their capabilities. I understand they are increasing their recruiting quotas...for those young enough to consider active military.

"The members of the U. S. Coast Guard usually protect the Los Angeles Harbor, but now, they'll protect the U. S. Navy overseas."

All the more reason to join the Coast Guard Auxiliary. See link above.

Great list! I have two family members now on active duty. I've signed-up for the Red Cross First Aid course, and stocking home supplies.

How do I get a conceal-carry permit?

I don't have a conceal-carry permit but your local law enforcement agency would be a good place to start. Thanks for you contributions.

Many cities and counties are forming and training Community Emergency Assistance Teams (CERT). These teams provide aid in the event of natural disaster or emergency. I am a team leader in my county and urge you to contact your local Office of Emergency Services and inquire where your community is in this process. If they’re lagging, hold their feet to the fire by forming volunteer Neighborhood Emergency Assistance groups and inviting whatever lead agency is in charge of this replacement to Civil Defense. Many areas are resisting because of their bias against “civilian involvement”.

This post is a great idea. I was wondering how I might participate as a civilian.
