Under normal circumstances, a few civil libertarians and immigration lawyers would be right when they insist greater safeguards are needed to protect non-citizens. About 700 people, mostly of Middle East descent, have been detained in the aftermath of Sept. 11, sometimes longer than usual and often under a cloud of secrecy.

I wonder how many people are even aware of this idiotic law. It should be tied to Ted Kennedy tighter than Mary Jo. Repealing this lunacy should be one of the first priorities of our congressional critters!
Can you imagine the corresponding law if applied to a family court-- nobody should be denied the right to see (insert name of your favorite public official) just because they've advocated their assassination.
Bump!
The only thing we know about them -- other than that they live among us -- is that they are foreign-born and they are Muslims. The government has been remarkably tight-lipped about precisely how many Muslim visitors we are currently accommodating, but from unofficial estimates, there appear to be more than a million. Even if the attorney general instigated latter-day Palmer raids, it will take years and years to investigate and infiltrate every potential terrorist cell operating on our shores. The investigations should not be conducted while the enemy continues residing here, plotting the next attack. It's an extreme measure, but we face an extreme threat. It is suicidal naivete to think we can simply seal off every water supply, air vent, food supply and crop duster from now until the end of time. We cannot search every truck, every passenger, every shopper, every subway, every person entering every building -- every American every day.
It is impossible to stop Islamic fundamentalists who believe that slaughtering thousands of innocent Americans will send them straight to Allah. All we can do is politely ask aliens from suspect nations to leave -- with the full expectation of readmittance -- while we sort the peace-loving immigrants from the murderous fanatics.
Terrorist Deportation Plan can have two fail-safes: (1) Muslim immigrants who agree to spy on the millions of Muslim citizens unaffected by the deportation order can stay; and (2) any Muslim immigrant who gets a U.S. senator to waive his deportation -- by name -- gets to stay.
There will be NO safety from terrorist threats, and NO security in this country until we close down the whole immigration works, from the ground up. The gov't can play footsie as long as it wants, pretending that they don't "know for sure" about terrorist involvement with the anthrax poisonings, but that's just smoke and mirrors, to breed doubt in people's minds that "perhaps this is really the work of domestic right-wingers after all." Fostering such doubt undercuts any political pressure people might exert on their representatives to *deport now.* Everything coming up now - national ID cards, official "uncertainty" over anthrax, emphasis on how "peaceful" Islam is - are ALL diversions leading us away from the immigration issue.
Whether America wants to admit it or not, those people died on 9/11 because our immigration policies 1) let those terrorists in, and 2) allowed large communities of Middle-Eastern Muslims to form in various cities, in which they could hide.
Since 1992, due to immigration, you have had a population increase in these states:
California 25%, New York 22%, Michigan 18%, Texas 18%, North Carolina 15%, Florida 18%,
these represent just examples, I could go on and give you more. With this , they are picking the conservatives off one by one.
It started with Bob Dorman in 1992.
Do you all know why that slug Teddy Kennedy pushed for that 1990 law? To reward the IRA scum who were running like rats to hide in the US.There will be NO safety from terrorist threats, and NO security in this country until we close down the whole immigration works, from the ground up. Worth repeating. Thanks.
They can shut congress down because their sorry butts may be in danger. They get antibiotics that are not available to you or me. They get the best health care possible that is paid for by you and me.
Is the real problem here Osama bin Laden or is the problem our own representatives that allow this stupidity to continue?
