The AIDS epidemic will not be allowed to die. There's too much in it for too many political interests.

Homosexuals have used AIDS as a victimism credential, to get heterosexuals to regard them with pity and as targets for largesse. Of course, it helps when ordinary heteros think they can catch AIDS as easily as promiscuous gay anal receptives and needle-sharing intravenous drug users.

Leftists have used AIDS to frighten the country into accepting large government programs of several kinds. Don't forget that the whole "safe sex" thing that currently infests the government schools was justified by the AIDS epidemic.

Bluenoses have used AIDS the way they tried (unsuccessfully) to use syphilis, gonorrhea, and herpes II: to scare people into keeping their clothes on. It worked, for a while. It might even have kept some homosexually-inclined young men from exploring their urges. But, as Fumento, notes, it didn't last.

The medical community and its research arms love AIDS. Nothing justifies massive donations to hospitals or fat research grants like an incurable disease. Particularly sweet is the notion that one can get AIDS from a transfusion. Hey, who's supposed to be watching the blood supply, if not the doctors?

Government adores AIDS. Anything that frightens people is in government's interest -- and what's more frightening than the notion that a sexual encounter could sentence you to death? "The State is based on threat." (Robert Anton Wilson)

I haven't found a reason for anyone to want the problem to go away, except out of ordinary human kindness and a desire for the improvement of the human condition. You know, motives you never find at work in politics.

I agree with the article's sentiments very much; I marvel at how the big cities still haven't shut down the bath houses because people are spreading AIDS in those establishments; People say you can't stop people from having homosexual orgies; True, you can't stop them from doing that in private homes, but a city should not tolerate a business that promotes or hosts homosexual orgies because of this disease;

Also, we should remember that the AIDS epidemic although it has subsided in America is raging in African nations and in India and it is primarilly heterosexual over there.

You are right, of course, but since they (most homosexuals) fought any and all reasonable responses to the disease, I'm happy with the ironic justice meted out.

"Also, we should remember that the AIDS epidemic although it has subsided in America is raging in African nations and in India and it is primarilly heterosexual over there."

Probably not as true as the activists would have us believe. Bisexuality is far more prevalent in Africa than is generally reported. So is prostitution in a region poor in antibiotics. The real avenues of sexual entry for AIDS into the "heterosexual" population are other venereal diseases and bisexual men.

I know less about India than Africa, but it's also important to keep in mind that clean water, regular bathing, and personal hygiene inhibit STDs to an extent. Also, in Africa, there are many types of biting insects which transmit blood-borne diseases... malaria, sleeping sickness, etc. Lots of other variables in that particular petrie dish.

I don't doubt that some international agencies have exaggerated the AIDS crisis in Africa. It's just as you said, it's a different world over there. They have very poor hygene, no treatment for STD's, so open sores cause a spread of AIDS in africa/India whereas here it wouldn't spread.

It's really apples and oranges.

Elephants can carry anthrax in Africa and India.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/releases/01news/declindea.htm

"HIV mortality declined 26 percent in 1996, 48 percent in 1997, and 21 percent in 1998."

"While the five leading causes of death in 1999: Heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory disease (formally classified as "Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and allied conditions"), and accidents (unintentional injuries) remained unchanged from the previous year, some significant changes did occur in the ranking of leading causes.

"The disease (AIDS) was the eighth leading cause of death in 1996, dropped out of the top 10 leading causes of death last year, and no longer ranks among the top 15 leading causes of death today."

"The number of reported cases of gonorrhea increased steadily from 1964 to 1977, fluctuated through the early 1980s, increased until 1987, and since 1987 has decreased annually"

India Times of India scoff at 560,000 Aids Orphans claim

Spare a thought for India's AIDS mothers. Despite debilitating illness they are furiously bearing children at a rate of 70 pregnancies each --according to statistics that inform the United Nations AIDS Summit.

Spare a thought for India's poor bewildered journalists too. A local Aids Rethinker group tipped them off that the official statistics to be presented to the UN meant India had 560,000 Aids orphans --but only 17,000 Aids deaths.

Assuming 7,000 of those dead had been women of childbearing age --they must have had over 70 children each to make the figures add up. No wonder the press conference turned into a debacle.

Everything we are told about AIDS turns out to be complete lies. The power of the giant drugs companies?

The U.S. Army study of 1.1 million G.I.'s who were stationed in the Phillipines (over a ten year period) and kept 100,000 prostitutes in business (70% were said to be HIV positive) showed only ONE was HIV positive (not sick)?

This was the only case of mass HIV testing in the World.

Condoms in the Phillipines are of such poor quality that only 8% can even hold water.

Same here. In 20 years I only know of one person--a business acquaintance, who died of AIDS. In 1985 I was in high school and a teacher glumly told the class that AIDS would be an pandemic and that we'd all be going to funerals every week for our friends. I didn't believe her then and I feel vindicated now.

You are so right. Everything we were told would happen has turned out to be wrong. They claimed that twenty million people would be HIV positive by the year 2000 and yet the figure in 2001 is a mere 650,000. Remember the number of HIV positives was one million in 1985. That means (after subtracting mortalities) only 100,000 people have become HIV positive in sixteen years or less than 6,000 a year in the entire United States. Most, like Magic Johnson, remain completely healthy.

AIDS has been the scam of all scams.

Actually, scratch that, the rumor was that our grade school music teacher, a young guy, who very suddenly died, died of AIDS. Of course, he seemed a bit fruity and fey to me.

So, while unconfirmed, I may have known one person who died of AIDS, and natch, wouldn't you guess it, he was gay.
