My father has passed away

Some of you may recall a couple of posts of mine asking for prayers for my father, who was suffering from cancer. I am sorry to announce that he died sometime Saturday morning

I last went to see him Friday evening. His breathing was difficult and his dentures weren't fitting, so it was very difficult to hear a lot of what he was saying to me. But more than once he said "Make sure you write thank you notes to....". The last part was unintelligible. I didn't know what he meant at the time, but of course now I do. He knew his time was coming and he wanted things to be done properly.

He got to see all his kids and his granddaughter the previous weekend, and everyone of course is very grateful for that. My 3-year-old niece (his granddaughter) got a bigger smile out of him than I had seen on him in a long time. Before we left, she insisted that everyone give "Poppo" a kiss. I am a pretty stereotypical guy when it comes to things like this, but I did give him a kiss on the forehead. I am so grateful she made me do this now. :)

I am very grateful for all the prayers that were sent up after my previous requests. I know they added to his days and to his comfort. I want to say a special thanks to Real Saxophonist for a couple of reasons. One is that he made it a special point to say he would pray for my sanity. Boy was that needed! Also, he had posted earlier about losing a second parent, and I don't think I responded. Knowing what it is like now, I really wished I had and would like to apologize publically to RS for that.

My sincere condolences and prayers. The 8th anniversary of my father's death will be in November, and I remember every minute of that day as if it were yesterday. Thank God for the years you had with him.

I'm sorry for your loss, too. I lost my father to lung cancer in 1987 and it still feels like yesterday.
