Ashcroft's Warning: Dirty Bomb

Am I the only one who heard Sean Hannity, at about 5:40PM EST, stop while on the air and say: "So that's what Ashcroft's warning is. It's a dirty bomb."

No, DrCarl, you are not the only one. Sean said that FNC was reporting that the threat was a dirty bomb. The problem is where? When? How?
To: cmsgop
>Good Post...........Splain Little More Please?
That's it. At the time indicated above or thereabouts, Nationally boradcast conservative talk show host, Sean Hannnity was talking about the terrorist threat when suddenly he stopped as if he wass talking to soomeone else and said something to the effect of: "So that's it. What Ashcroft knows is that the threat is about a dirty bomb." Then it was not mentioned again.

Nuclear waste material wrapped in heavy explosives which, when detonated, will blow the waste material all over the place, killing thousands in a populated area like Manhattan.
It will also render a large piece of ground useless for a long time to come.

"Does anyone have any idea what a 'dirty bomb' is?" A dirty bomb is a conventional bomb that is loaded with radioactive material that will spread throughout a relatively wide area via the explosion.

I heard Carl Cameron on Fox News tell Brit Hume that there is good information from Argentina that nuclear material was smuggled through Bogata, Colombia and then across the Mexican border into the US. He said the most troublesome information has been gathered within the last 48 hours. I expect a 'dirty bomb' incident within the next 72 hours. Where will it be and what will you do? Weather patterns in the US generally move west to east. Get on the west side of any incident asap?

A "dirty bomb" is made from a combination of conventional explosives and radioactive waste. It's sometimes called a "radiological dispersal" bomb. It does not have the ability to create a chain reaction a' la Hiroshima: Its primarily purpose is to disperse dangerous radioactive waste and thereby kill people by exposing them to toxic levels of radiation. Radioactive waste is pretty readily available since some countries pay the Third World to bury the stuff.

Yikes, sorry I saw this thread. Sometimes I think it is better to be in the dark so to speak. I long for the bomb shelters of the 60's.
To: blam
I'd expect a dirty bomb in LA or Dallas. Maybe somewhere in AZ. All close to Mexico border. Since I live in Dallas, it makes my knees weak thinking about it.

I am going to opening night of the NBA, Laker game. I will certainly be keeping my eyes out...for middle-easternmen men and hot babes in Jerry Buss' box.
I am hoping this is not the 'dirty nuke' event planned. Back in a few hours!...
To: blam
Well, if it happens in NYC, I would think Southern New England (where I live) would be affected (as well as NYC, of course). But I guess it all depends on the prevailing winds at the time.
Let's hope it's a dirty bomb, and not a dirty nuke. From what I've read here at FR, a dirty nuke does damage in its own right, but ALSO disperses radioactive material. This would seem to be a far more serious weapon than a regular dirty bomb (e.g., one detonated with conventional explosives).
To: blam
>I expect a 'dirty bomb' incident within the next 72 hours
So do I, I'm afraid, and I live in NYC. Worse, so do my kids.
We need to kill these people. If this thing goes off, we need to end the war with all of our enemies in a day.

Yeah, but it depends on what and how much ground is exposed. As long as it doesn't seep into the water table, it's possible to remove the ground and bury it elsewhere.

"My husband says it's a Nuclear Bomb with alot of fall-out, I'm sorry to tell you." No! It is not a nuclear explosion. It is a conventional explosion with nuclear material attached. The conventional explosion is intended to disperse the radioactive material over a large area. Radioactive contamination is the intent, not to blow down buildings and such. Potassium iodide is an antidote for radiation poisoning. (I have learned most of this from fellow FReepers)

You could expect it anywhere. Almost any place in the US would be a strategic hit for one of these. I-35 up to Kansas City would wipe out Millions and (from what everyone says) Ruin a large portion of the US agriculture with it./

I'm thinking a lot of 3rd world despots have to be contemplating what the reaction will be for them, and I can tell them it will be measured in megatons. If they have any way at all to stop this, they can be a hero -- at least for awhile. If not, we can settle all scores at once.

Another possibility is California's Silicon Valley, near Intel's main chip-manufactoring facility.
Radiation will ruin sensitive semiconductors, so contaminating the area will make semiconductor manufactoring impossible in the area for a while, plus ruining some of the most expensive real estate in America

Such a weapon would of necessity weigh a great deal and would not be intended as a small poisoning potential, hence, such a weapon would likely be transported and detonated from a boat or barge, or from a tractor-trailer box transport (shipping container). Large trucks should be prohibited from any route within ten miles of any major downtown, immediately.

"So do I, I'm afraid, and I live in NYC. Worse, so do my kids." I'm thinking it will be in the west for two reasons:
* Moving from the Mexican border across the whole US gives a greater chance of getting caught.
* An explopsion in the west would spread radiation across a larger area of the US.

I'd expect a dirty bomb in LA or Dallas. Maybe somewhere in AZ. So look at the upside. Even if a dirty bomb is set off on the West Coast as early as tonight, that still gives all the folks East of the Mississippi River more than enough time to celebrate Halloween tomorrow night before the radioactivity reaches us.

If all those drugs can come across our border with Mexico, nuclear waste material cann come across without with or without NAFTA too.

"The problem is where? When? How? Undoubtably in one of Blue Nation's failed megalopolises - and probably downtown during the business day or during rush hour.
That's easy to deduce strategically and tactically. A "Nasser nuke" (highly-radioactive junk surrounding conventional explosives to scatter it - an idea Germans were developing for Nasser) would not kill many if the target was, say, Saxapahaw, North Carolina. Only a place with lots of "people who matter" in a small area would create real emergency-response hassles - and preferably one very dependent on bridges and tunnels. And only by attacking some downtown business district with it would the permanently-uninhabitable real estate be any big loss; neither Saxapahaw nor Harlem would matter to the grandees of Blue Nation.

So, further on this theory would mean the ROCKIES or east of the rockies. Doubt that it would get carried over them. The great plains man......wind goes on and on

Houston is only a few hours north of the Mexican border. My father lived there until only about six weeks ago (he's now in a residential care facility in California. Maybe 1 1/2 to 2 hours north of L.A.
Houston has Bush Intercontinental Airport, plus the Ship Channel, and lots of industry (I'm no Houston expert, but I believe it's the third or fourth most populous city in the U.S.)

Weeks ago I made a comment here about the danger of nuclear materials from hospital radiotherapy departments in relation to an Arab Radiology Resident who was temporarily arrested in Texas and then released.
Look at Arab doctors in this country.
SEND ALL MOSLEMS OUT OF THIS COUNTRY BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!!
To: FUSSBALL
"What else can one do? " That's about it. You will be advised about your level of exposure and if you need to take potassium iodide, the government has large stocks of PI. Do not take PI without being advised to do so.
