Swiss Extradite Suspected Extremist
BERN, Switzerland (AP) - Swiss authorities said Wednesday they had extradited to Italy a man suspected of belonging to an Islamic extremist group that recruited volunteers to fight in Bosnia.
The 29-year-old Tunisian was handed over to Italian authorities at the Chiasso border post between the two countries on Monday, said Folco Galli, a Justice Ministry spokesman. He declined to name the suspect, who was identified as Chokri Djebari by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.
The man was arrested in Zurich on an Italian warrant Sept. 24, and did not fight extradition, Galli said.
Italian police in Bologna suspect he belonged to an Islamic organization that recruited volunteers in Italy for Bosnian fighting, Galli said. The volunteers were sent to Afghanistan and Pakistan for training.
The arrest warrant was issued in August, before the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, Galli said. The man was suspected of falsifying identity documents and visas.
In another Swiss extradition, a 34-year-old Algerian was sent to France last month on suspicion of links to a terrorist organization. His extradition was approved in June but he was only handed over after he had served a prison sentence in Switzerland, Galli said.
I guarantee that this Jihadist was not recruiting for the Serbs.
More to come.
