Psychics join the manhunt
The Sunday Times (U.K.) ^ | 11/11/2001

Posted on 11/10/2001 3:32:03 PM PST by Pokey78

US intelligence agencies are recruiting psychics to help predict future attacks and to find Osama Bin Laden. The recruits, known as "remote viewers", claim to be able to visualise happenings in distant places by using paranormal powers.

The US government established a remote viewing programme, known as Stargate, in the 1970s in an attempt to utilise the skills claimed by psychics to combat communism. The programme, at the Stanford Research Institute in California, was shut down in 1995 after the end of the cold war.

Now, however, US intelligence agencies are reactivating some of their old paranormal spies.

Prudence Calabrese, whose Transdimensional Systems employs 14 remote viewers, confirmed that the FBI had asked the company to predict likely targets of future terrorist attacks.

"Our reports suggest a sports stadium could be a likely target," she said.

The FBI and CIA refused to comment but confirmed investigators have been told to "think out of the box".

Angela Thompson-Smith and Lyn Buchanan, former members of Stargate, said that they, too, had been approached.

So did Thomas Harris, the author of Black Sunday, 25 years ago. Harris later authored "Silence of the Lambs"...

I'm not a "remote viewer" yet I also can "see" a sports stadium as a very probable target. An even more probable target is Los Angeles, specifically Hollywood... I suspect OBL salivates at the thought of destroying the center of America's "culture".

Good grief - why not dowsing or tarot cards?

This is the direct result of secret budgets. I'd rather they spend the money on lap dances (which they probably are, anyway).

As Federal employees, of course. Wouldn't want to fire any hard-working psychics just because they couldn't see the future.

Hm...

Rudman has always been known as an independent Republican. In fact, his Concord Coalition, co-founded by Democrats and Republicans both, issued a full-page ad in The New York Times on Oct. 7, as an open letter to President Bush and members of Congress, calling for serious consideration of the disappearance of the predicted budget surplus and reversing the tax cuts in order to prevent inflation and further economic woes.

Actually, my sister "saw" 9/11 about a week beforehand, but had no idea what it was. She wrote this in an e-mail to me:
About a week before the WTC attack happened, I was relaxing, and kind of daydreaming and I knew a plane crash had taken place and there was a fire. I saw bodies raining out of a tall office building (kind of a yellow brick building), which then dissolved.

Now, I was greatly disturbed by this "errant thought" and was kind of down on myself for allowing it to happen. I remember telling myself that if I was going to let my mind wander and imagine any sort of scene that I should be imagining something more pleasant. I thought the whole thought kind of ridiculous because I knew that planes didn't crash into buildings--a pilot would do anything he could to avoid hitting a building. And then I thought that if I was going to imagine a thought or a scene, that I could control it and I should change it to something more positive. So when I visualized it again, I imagined that the people were sliding down ropes instead of free falling. As much as I tried to reassure myself, the thought that I had felt terrible and it stuck with me for a couple of days.

Even while it was happening on 9/11, it took me awhile, maybe that evening, to realize that I had "seen" it before or what I had seen matched up with what happened.

I don't remember having had a psychic vision before. There have been many times that I've known something before it happened, but never anything like this. I wish I could have done something about 9/11, but I keep thinking that it must have been meant to happen and it couldn't be stopped.

She's disturbed by this. I don't think anyone has control over such visions, but if someone has the "gift," don't knock it.

I don't discount the real, but very rare, gift of prophecy or foreknowledge.

I was knocking the frauds.

Your sister shouldn't be down on herself for not concluding that her "vision" was a fortelling of an imminent attack on the WTC. No other reasonable person would be. If this wasn't a coincidence, perhaps this was a sign to her for some future purpose.

Oh, I didn't intend to be critical. I know--everyone on the thread was knocking the frauds. I agree that a lot of the people making a living at being "psychic" are a bunch of charlatans.

Can you help, though? When I saw this thread, I thought I might be able to find some support for my sister from anyone else who might have foreseen 9/11. I know about the rap album cover, the Dutch calendar, and the NJ minister with the newsletter. Anyone else out there?

I recall reports, one in Texas, I believe, and the other either in NY or NJ, of kids with Middle Eastern families possibly having guilty knowledge beforehand of the 9/11 attacks. Nothing about prophetic knowledge, though.

You ought to run a Vanity thread along those lines. See if any of the other FReepers have heard of such a thing.

Good luck, and ping me to the thread if you decide to run it.

9/11 is proof that psychics are bogus: if they couldn't predict even a vague hint that something REALLY REALLY BIIIIIIIG was going to shatter the nation's collective psyche around that date & location, they sure aren't going to be accurate with minor personal/individual nuances. Multiply this repeatedly with Princess Diana's sudden death, and various other huge events that shocked the psychic industry's clientelle, with nary a peep about "incoming!" even hours before it happened.

That the claim of prediction is made long after the event deserves great knocking. Sounds more like a case of "suggested memories" (a documented common mental phenomenon) coupled with the frequency & vagueness of daydreams across a population of 6,000,000,000+ people.
