Vanity: Physicist and Mrs. Physicist Had a Son Today
Mrs. Physicist, with my invaluable assistance

I am pleased--irrationally exuberant, in fact--to announce the birth of my son today.
Jacob David Sterner was born by caesarean section at 1:41 PM EST today at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, PA. He weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz., and was 19.25 inches long. Jake and Mrs. Physicist came through the process in excellent health.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Mark Finnegan, who delivered our daughters Emily and Molly, also at Riddle, in 1995 and 1997, respectively.
Here is a bigger picture of Jake.
Here I am holding my boy.
To take this post into the stratosphere of vanity, I will inflict upon you a valedictory sonnet, which I penned today:
ATLAS
Jacob David Sterner, start your life!
Knight errant, leave the fortress of the womb,
Your country's been attacked, and all is strife,
Ten patriots exhort you from the tomb.
The fashion of the day is ignorance,
You'll have to think and learn, despite the japes,
And cover for your neighbor's indolence,
Your sweat will feed and clothe ungrateful apes.
Your father has affrontery enough,
To ask so much of one boy at his birth,
But know that you are made of Sterner stuff:
Your shoulders can accomodate the Earth.
To sire you was my duty, dearest son:
The world needs such a man as you'll become.
(The line about "ten patriots" refers to his ten ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War.)

As a deist, I do not believe in the efficacy of prayer. In slightly more than six years, I have prayed in earnest three times, on the off-chance that anyone was listening. In each case, my prayer was exactly two words long:
THANK YOU.

I should add that Mrs. Physicist made the candy-corn hat. I have photographs of her from today, but she browbeat me into not posting any of them.

Congrats! Just curious, but did your wife decide to go caesarean after you showed her your calculations regarding the force necessary to deliver the little lad?
To: Physicist
Expand your vocabulary when thanking God, for He truly blessed you. That's a beautiful baby boy (take it from one who just had his seventh child, a son, a mere seven weeks ago), and I extend heartiest congratulations to you and the missus. :)
To: Physicist
Well, I hunted around a bit, but it seems that nobody makes a toddler board-book version of the works of Stephen Hawking or Carl Sagan or anything appropriate for a Little Physicist.
No worries, though - no doubt he'll be babbling about superstrings and M-theory and Kaluza-Klein in no time. ;)

Cosmic congratulations to the proud parents. Great sonnet.
To: Physicist
Congratulations. I'd mention something about the new father handing out cigars, but, well, you know ... (Sorry about dragging Clinton into this.) Best of wishes to the new life you have brought to the world.

Congradulations on your first-born son! He's a comely looking lad. Takes after his mother right? LOL Be sure and tell the girls that the Crown Prince of the family has now arrived.
To: Physicist
Physicist, you were our hero first, but you'll be his forever. You are blessed.

If my husband posted any pictures of me immediately after giving birth, he would have wished he was never born! LOL!
How exciting to have a son! I was blessed with 3 daughters. Again, congratulations. And remember, GET YOUR WIFE SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL!

Just curious, but did your wife decide to go caesarean after you showed her your calculations regarding the force necessary to deliver the little lad? Nah. I expressed it in kips, and made it look easy. The fact that our first two were c-sections (the first one non-elective) was what swayed her.
To: Physicist
He is TINY. And so cute! Congratulations!

P.S. Sometimes a simple thank you in acknowledgement of His blessing is all that's needed. Again congratulations.

Note to Jake: the Lord bless you and keep you. You're a blessed little guy already, for the Lord has seen fit to place you with this man and this woman and these siblings, at this time. You are blessed, little Jake!
Note to Physicist and Mrs. Physicist: well done! He's a beautiful boy and the Lord has blessed you greatly in selecting you to raise this boy. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and give you peace.
Physicist, you have a beautiful family. Thank you for adding to our midst these wonderful little ones.

You guys! LOL!
Get her something that doesn't have anything electrical associated with it. (and don't tell me you're charged up and that your atomic structure is enough! hehehe) It's difficult . . . that whole science lifestyle makes gift giving hard because we are so practical. Both our families are mostly engineers, including me.

Phys - time for you to say one more
"THANK YOU" prayer for your precious son.
Keep your camera handy for when your better-half is ready to join you all in a family picture. We'd love to see your beautiful family together!
Congratulations and blessings to you, and the new mother.
