Immigration reform still on the table

MEXICO CITY - The Foreign Relations Secretary on Thursday denied reports that an immigration reform deal with the United States had been derailed due to security concerns after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, saying officials expect to iron out details for a plan by early next year.

An Associated Press story this week cited anonymous White House officials who said an immigration deal would have to wait since many U.S. lawmakers fear legalizing migrants could leave the nation vulnerable to future attacks. The story said a Mexican delegation was informed of the lawmakers' stance during a weekend meeting in Washington.

Foreign Relations Spokeswoman Liliana Ferrer denied the report but acknowledged that, during the meeting, U.S. officials had stressed U.S. national security as their first priority. She pointed to last week's Mexico visit by two top U.S. Democrat lawmakers as evidence of the U.S. will to reach a deal.

Ferrer said U.S. officials during the meeting had even suggested "co-opting" an immigration program as part of an increased security shield along the Mexico-U.S. border. Mexican officials have floated a similar idea in the weeks since the attacks.

"Both sides remain committed to reaching an immigration agreement," Ferrer told reporters in Mexico City, adding, "Immigration is linked to the economic market, not to terrorism."

Just five days before the attacks, Fox and his team of advisors were in Washington trying to iron out the framework for a deal that would legalize as many as 3 million undocumented Mexicans living in the United States and give temporary work visas to millions more.

Ferrer said officials hope to reach a deal in the first few of months of 2002. Before the attacks, Fox had been pushing for a deal by December.

Foreign Relations Undersecretary Gustavo Mohar, recently appointed negotiator-in-chief of immigration affairs, traveled to Washington over the weekend with hopes of kick-starting stalled immigration talks.

The same weekend, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt traveled to Mexico where they pledged not to let heightened security worries overshadow an immigration deal many considered a virtual lock before the attacks.

"Justice and Security are not mutually exclusive. We should create an immigration program that is just and favors families and businesses," wrote the lawmakers, both Democrats, in a joint editorial published in Mexico City newspapers.

I never take off the day after Thanksgiving - it's a day when I can actually get some work done as the office is usually deserted. If only they hadn't banned FreeRepublic!

This comes as no suprise to me.

Daschle and Gephardt ride again. They should be run out of Washington on a rail.

How about this for an immigration program. Deport all of the welfare, food stamp, medicaid, section 8 using bums and give honest hard working Americans a tax break? Works for me!!

Not really a problem, only a short delay. You can count on President Bill Bush pushing hard for and signing this. It's just a matter of time.

I wonder if it's time to break out the "Bubba Bush" moniker? It just seems SOOOO fitting!

daschle and gephardt got paid off by rich mexicans to take their excess population and let them be our problem - with the other promise that all the mexicans in this country and theirs along the border will vote for the democrats in all of the upcoming elections - that is the only reason the motor voter bill was passed - so all the mexicans in mexico within 100 miles of the border will vote - the bastards are selling us out.

The REAL question that needs answering here is,"What is Bubba Bush (that's right,I've decided it's time to make it official.) getting out of this?

I'll believe that when I see it.

Good article, but it is very sad that this could actually be true.

I swear. I feel that nearly ALL of our politicians are delusional and are showing vast examples of stupidity.

The entire government has become corrupt, and decent, law-abiding American citizens get the raw deal.

I live in Georgia, and my brother went to Wal-Mart last night to pick up some Christmas lights. He told me that he had never seen so many Mexicans. That's right, the illegal swarm has reached the east, and I have a good indication of where southern California was 20-25 years ago.

With the way things are going, there's not going to be an America within twenty years. I honestly can say this, because I see our nation crumbling right before my eyes, not only in regard to immigration.

It wouldn't be of any surprise if Bush legalized all the border-jumpers. After all, crime is rewarded and law is not, or so it seems these days. Politicians appear not to care what their constituents think. It's a sad day when even the people have no voice.

However, that would indicate common sense and, thus, it falls into the category that if it makes sense it will never happen.

In consideration of the atrocity done to our nation on September 11 (but with none towards the fact that both our borders are used as easy entry points for illegals of ALL nationalities), steamrolling our country towards coddling non-citizens to accede to the demands of foreign leaders will be postponed for a few months.

Kind of makes me all warm 'n' gooey inside, how they care...

Interesting article ! But sadly what that Mexican Lady said about Mexico reconqering the US - S/West could come true if left to the LIBERAL IDIOTS we have as politicians, and our media is even worse.

Its quite obvious that the vast majority of Americans are against, Any sort of Illegal Immigration & want Illegals deported. EVEN Hispanics in recent surveys/polls over 60% want the Government to get tough on Illegal immigration and many US-Born hispanics are also against mass immigration.

So why does the government do nothing about it, and listen to the corporate interest groups & Radical Ethnic groups like MALDEF/LULAC/LA-RAZA ???

FINALLY, What the Mexican women said in the article, about HAVING BABIES, is very true. The US-Born "Native" Population just don't have enough babies to reach replacement levels. We have 1.9 Babies Per Female Hispanics Have 2.9 Per Female (Too much for most to afford, hence their high child poverty rate).

Since 1973 37 Million Babies were KILLED in abortions, if these abortions were not carried out & Abortions were made ILLEGAL we would easily supparse our REPLACEMENT LEVELS of 2 Children per female it would be about 2.5 Per Female. END ABORTION AND MOST OF OUR "POPULATION" PROBLEMS WOULD BE REVERSED/RESOLVED. Thanks !!!

I am not giving Bush a pass. As a matter of fact, I have been highly critical of Bush and his immigration and amnesty policy. Bush and Fox are to buddy-buddy for me.

After calling me a racist, she told me that she hated "Europeans" and that her people would take over the Southwest because "We have babies, and you don’t."

That's it in a nutshell.

As soon as you fall for the false choice that you have to vote for the "lesser of two evils" the Demopublican and Republicratic elites have won.

"If voting could change anything, it would be illegal."

"Both sides remain committed to reaching an immigration agreement," Ferrer told reporters in Mexico City, adding,

Translation:  Can't shut off that cheap labor just for a little thing like national security.

The ones who own our politicians (bush included) have a vested interest in keeping the borders open for profit.
