OK, it seems everybody has an opinion on oohrah.
Therefore, it shouldn't be too difficult to run down the poop as to where this aberration originated--with so much talent aboard FR, somebody's bound to have a decent reference of some kind,
My troubles are over, and here I've been searching for a source document on my own all this time. Had I known of the great interest in this subject, I'd have come here first!
I have numerous threads on this subject all over the WWW, getting kinda hard to keep track of, so I have opened an additional Forum for this one subject alone.
See Gunny G's Oohrah Forum!
Let's get to the bottom of this bs!

WTF IS OohRah??? I've never heard it from a Marine - but then I don't know many and don't see them often.
Growing up, there was a family friend that had been in the Navy. He did a lot of diving and was in an underwater demolition team or something - I just remember him and his buddies having some pretty loud parties for old timers. Anyway, they used to yell HOO-YAH at the top of their lungs whenever they had reunions at his house. I always thought it was some juxtaposed version of YAH-HOO, but I was just a kid.

According to my former husband, a former Marine sniper, it's...ooh raw. Raw as in fresh meat.

Perhaps it's Russian, written [my keyboard doesn't have Cyrrilic characters] as YPA. The Russians do not have the letter h in their alphabet. YPA is their equivalent of hoorah.

actually, it's Ura, a rare Japanese fish that makes a delicious sushi. Hard to get here in the USA, but in Japan it costs about $40 a plate.

Beats me, ya gotta ask a leatherneck.

"Ooh-RAH!" is the battle cry of Marines. It's from the Russian battle cry Urrah!, which means (freely translated) "KILL 'EM ALL!"

I was at one time the editor of the Camp Pendleton SCOUT. We ran a story tracing the origins of "oohrah." I will attempt to dip it up at home and post it here.

From the search that I did I came up with it being the Russian word for 'hurrah' or 'hurray' that the Russians used during WWII.
