Police say no link found between bank accounts and Osama Bin Laden</b

No legal ground was available confirming the links between Osama Bin Laden, the prime suspect of the September 11, attacks against the United States, and certain bank accounts in Turkey believed to be belonging to individuals or companies having relationships with the Saudi terrorist, senior police intelligence officials said.

A list, including bank accounts and names, was given by the United States to Ankara and U.S. officials asked their Turkish colleagues to freeze the accounts.

Top police officials, speaking to the Turkish Daily News, said that the U.S. officials failed to provide sufficient proof confirming the links of these companies with Bin Laden.

"The demands of the United States did not have any legal basis," said a senior police official, contrary to the position of the Foreign Ministry, which had been in close cooperation with the U.S. officials on the issue.

The Turkish police department is seen to be reluctant in deepening cooperation with Washington on the financial links of Bin Laden in Turkey, despite the close cooperation between the two countries in the military and political field.

Senior police intelligence officials refer to the free movement of the wanted businessman Orhan Asliturk in the United States despite the arrest warrant from Ankara.

"As it is the case in the United States, we have our own rules and regulations. We cannot freeze these bank accounts without any concrete evidence on the issue," the police chief said.

The Foreign Ministry was urging the Finance Ministry and security circles for taking the necessary measures for freezing the bank accounts.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell will visit Ankara on Tuesday and the ways to broaden cooperation against terrorism will be discussed widely.

What are the Turks afraid of? Why the reluctance to investigate?

Does that answer your question? The Turks are afraid of freezing bank accounts of innocents. The article does not speak of a reluctance to investigate, but hints at a reluctance to go along with attempts to meddle in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.. Our cops will be happy to take corrective action backed by evidence, not allegations.
