Arafat is simply signaling to the world his secret association with a Polish pope that received the KGB's blessings before being sent to Rome.

But Arafat's wife is a "Christian".(Ha!) Now is she his wife of her own free will or is she being blackmailed or is the money worth it? That scums wife looks way too good for him!(as would anyone except Hanoi Jane or Katie Couric et. al.)

Update
14:02 Dec-23-01, 8 Tevet 5762
Israel Promises to Arrest Arafat if He Enters Bethlehem (IsraelNationalNews.com) Despite Israels ban on Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafats attending Christmas Mass in Bethlehem, Arafat today announced he will enter and confront Israeli soldiers who try to stop him.
No one will prevent me from travelling to Ramallah, he said. Arafat declared he would take part in Bethlehems Christmas activities, with or without Israeli approval, even if he has to travel on foot to the church in order to do so.
Diplomatic sources in Jerusalem made clear Arafat would not make it past the checkpoints. "We will not give in to the head of an entity that supports terror, while master terrorists roam free at his side." they said. The Prime Minister's Office made clear this is no way constitutes an encroachment on freedom of religion for Arafat himself is a Muslim.

Arafat truly has no business in Bethlehem that night. Did he allow Jews onto the Temple Mount during Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashanna(sp)? Does he allow Christians to go on top of the Temple Mount? According to an article I read just last night in Biblical Archaeology Review, no non-muslims are permitted on the Temple Mount. If he wants religious cooperation, he has got to give it!! Other than that, he does not celebrate Christmas, so it's no loss to him. It would serve him right if the Pope responds by asking Arafat to open up the Temple Mount.

Arafat wants to provoke an incident and wants the Pope to give him cover.
It's called "divide and conquer." Oldest trick in the book. The Pope had better not give Arafat any support in this crass manipulation.

I live in a very old school, very Soutern, very Baptist part of town. I'm always defending Catholics and the Pope to my neighbors and to the people in my Church. The Pope will lose my respect if he caves in to Arafat here.

THe assassination notwithstanding (a crucifiction imitation anecdote that does not prove the faith of the Pope nor the faith of his assassin), all the world's annointed ones are giving each other the wink on Israel and the West. Point is communist Poland does not let anyone get the job they want. Point is that while the likes of Solzhenitsyn who really faced the wrath of the Soviet cult of the sewage happpened to earn their job with their blood and were MUCH MORE INVOLVED IN DESTROYING THE SOVIET UNION THAN THIS POPE.
The Pope and his peace and love speeches over ISrael and Palestine are hardly of any comfort when we see that the healing requested involves using Israeli civilian bodies as human shields and recognizing the existence of a Palestinian Cult of death and Sewage as in the Soviet Union. #
N'ough said! This Pope is a fraud.

As near as I can tell by reviewing the religious doctrines of the parties, only the pope should attend, he represents the organization who started the observation of December 25 as the birthday of CHrist instead of the birthday of Mithra the sun god.

I not very hopeful..... I think the pope will help the Yasser out....

N'ough said! This Pope is a fraud. because Arafat is appealing to him ? Has John Paul said something in this matter to earn your accusation ? At the very least you should give him the benefit of the doubt and await his response, if any. BTW Arafat's wife is a CINO. Who else would marry and carry the seed of an Islamic terrorist ?
