Israeli School Regrets Burning New Testament.

JERUSALEM, Dec 26, 01 (CWNews.com) - A Jewish school on Tuesday expressed regret for holding a public burning of a copy of the New Testament, saying the event was a demonstration for students against Christian proselytizing efforts.

A spokeswoman for Orot, a public school in the Israeli town of Beit Shemesh near Jerusalem, said a teacher held the outdoor book-burning for his sixth-grade class in early December, destroying a Bible a missionary gave to a pupil. "We regret that this incident occurred," spokesman Jordana Klein said. "The intentions were not to criticize Christianity, but only to tell these Jewish boys that they don't have to listen to the missionaries." Klein said Orot pupils were regularly targeted by "aggressive" Christian missionaries living in the Jewish state.

The principal of the school had been summoned by Israel's Education Ministry for a disciplinary hearing. "This is a grave matter and the ministry condemns book-burning of any kind," a spokesman said. The school later said that if a child comes to school with a Bible given to him by missionaries, officials will tell him to take it home so his parents can decide what to do with it.

Proselytizing children is a criminal offense in Israel.

Hey, we have that in the US, too.

Over here it's the ACLU that does the Bible-trashing.

What are they afraid of? This is more like our "peace loving" moslem neighbors.

Welcome to FR today. Of course, burning a NT does nothing but make someone look foolish. It's almost as foolish to think that someone can be "coverted" to Christianity by another human being.

Your name says that you are Ghengis Kahn from Westchester? Do you make piles of skulls in the schoolyard?

The ACLU has been in the vanguard of the fight to eliminate any and all mention of God from schools and indeed all facets of public life. While not physically setting fire to Bibles, its work is directed to the same end.

It seldom defends conservative causes.

Those are the facts.

Removing the commandments/dogma of somebody's particular superstition from the school house walls is not the same as taking away someones's right to worship.

I stated that ACLU has been one of the major players in removing religion from schools and public life. You are agreeing with me, I believe. Further, your placement of an apostrophe before the "e" in "somebody's" implies the singular form of the possessive. That is incorrect. It is not the "particular superstition" of one person, nor is it even superstition. At least you're consistently wrong.

I would argue with your use of the word seldom, but as you did not actually disagree with me I'll let it go.

Don't let it go. Because I am disagreeing with you. Totally. Post some examples of the ACLU going into bat for conservative causes and I'll post some of their work against the freedom of relgion.

And as far as I'm concerned, the sooner we are rid of the foolish and discredited notion of faith and god the better. But that's just me.

You're in for a long wait.

"before the "e" in "somebody's"

Make that "y" in somebody's.

Don't bother mentioning that the ACLU does not burn any books

Be better if they and the ADL did burn books. What they do is slander, sue and financially wreck people. Books can be replaced. What one spends a life time creating is harder to regain.

Their real regret is that it got publicized in the US. Why don't they express their real feelings for the New Testament? Or did they?

The ACLU is like the NAACP. Anyone can join but the leadership and most of their supporters do seem, correct me if I am wrong, to be somewhat homogenous.
