That's not exactly true, since what you conveniently forget is that Stalin had practically all the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church (that didn't leave the country) executed or sent to die in the camps by the 1930's, so that any cooperation between the 4 surviving bishops (out of about 250 before the Bolshevik takeover) was literally a matter of physical survival. The same strategy would work in ANY religious, political, or other institution in human history -- kill the leaders layer after layer until you find at least one who will consent to cooperate. Human history tells us that there will ALWAYS be at least some such people.

In fact, Hitler COULD have used the Communist strategy and found at least one rabbi to be head of a loyal Jewish group to "cooperate" with the Nazi regime, had he thought about it and had reason to twist reality the same way the Communists did. You have no reason to tarnish the martyrial fate of tens of millions of people with the weakness of a few. Of course, Russia will still be a believing Christian country long after many other countries have ceased to be.

Believe me, it was not my intent to tarnish the horrendous martyrdom of Russian Christians, many millions of whom died awful deaths for their faith. If you got that impression, I apologize for the confusion.

The Russian Orthodox Church (and other Christian Churches in the Soviet Union) suffered atrocities of such magnitude, it is still beyond comprehension to the majority of the West. These souls no doubt represent a large percentage of the martyred and precious saints we will see someday in Heaven. Likewise, the Bolsheviks and Communists will form a mighty legion of The Damned in Hell and deserve the fate they gave the Saints on earth.

My point was, the organized church can be coopted by the State and used for it's own nefarious ends. These evil ends should not reflect on the True Believers who have no part in them and no control. A previous poster intimated that many were 'christians' who followed Hitler and the Nazis. My point is, they were 'christians' (cultural or deluded christians, if you will) in name only for the most part. It was the demonically-inspired State and their theological toadies in the compliant or conterfeit churches that give their bad name to the real Saints and the genuine Church. It is no different than what is going on today.

Yes but not too many know of the Solovetsky islands.

"But just so God alone can hear."
