You have stated the problem, I can call myself a palm tree, but that doesn't mean I am ever going to produce a coconut. People call themselves Christian, but there is no test given, or liscense issued to see if you really meet the standards, the only test is the fruit of the Spirit, and torturing your fellow man does not pass that test.
