. It appears we are no longer fighting the last war. SF is fighing this war using the same exact methods they used to fight the one in VN. The difference is that this time the political leadership is not trying to tell them how to do it or putting insane restrictions on them.

Wrong, post 24,we never intended to win.We were not allowed to win.Vietnam was nothing more than a playground for our CIA,and our GI'S were the pawns. Please don't open that wound, too much scar tissue.

The Duke was the best! Gary Cooper, Lee Marvin, or Errol Flynn could also have carried off the role of the commander of this unit in a movie better than modern actors. (Maybe James Stewart or Kirk Douglas as well.) Middle-aged, Baby Boomer actors Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner pale by comparison. Going down to the Gen. X crowd, what is there? Leonardo di Caprio, Sean Penn, etc? Girly-men and punks. (And they are mostly a bunch of lefties, with few exceptions: James Woods comes to mind as a standout.)

There is much anger in the world against us, but there is now the beginnings of major fear. The bad guys will never love us, but they are beginning to fear us. That is a wonderful achievement for our long term safety. The accomplished are almost always hated. We cannot legislate friendship, but we can, and we must, command the respect(fear)of our detractors. I think President Bush knows this.

God Bless Rummy. I seen the C-span last nite. I think the original air date was Tuesday, anyway worth seeing. rummy explained what I thought was kinda sensitive info...like how the special forces integrated into the culture. I am still amused that SF rode on horseback with all the modern gadgets...you know GPS, Laser designators, nite vision goggles. Totally Awesome..

The SF guy on the horse with the headless goat is the same guy we saw a couple of days ago as one of the attackers on the hospital that was wearing a "I heart NY" pin.
I am SOOOOO jealous!

"So, Curly, have you killed anyone today?"
"Not yet. But the day's still young."

Great comment...indeed, we did not lose the war in South East Asia...
One interesting comment concerning "Smart bombs", it appears that they were in use in SEA...but probably not as technically advanced as the current crop...
From the book: THE PRICE OF EXIT by Tom Marshall.
"From 1965 to 1968 the U.S. Navy and Air Force lost ninety-seven aircraft unsuccessfully attempting to bring down the bridge at Thanh Hoa, the primary rail connector to China, which was the source of supplies and safe havens then just as it had been against the French. The Thanh Hoa was destroyed on the first run in December 1972 by a single, "smart" two-thousand pound bomb."

Go Cavalry!

"The explosions were deafening, and the timing so precise that, as the soldiers described it, hundreds of Afghan horsemen literally came riding out of the smoke, coming down on the enemy in clouds of dust and flying shrapnel. A few carried RPGs (rocket-propelled guns). Some had as little as 10 rounds for their weapons. And they rode boldly - Americans, Afghans, towards the Taliban and al Qaeda fighters. It was the first cavalry attack of the 21st century," Rumsfeld said. I can't wait to see the movie.
