I use to do a lot of work in New York City as a structural engineer. I did work at many notable addresses in Manhattan in the late 1990’s. I did work on the roof top of One Liberty Plaza adjacent to the former World Trade Center, even once did a small design job for the Port Authority on the concourse level of the former World Trade Center.
I had a chance to visit the Ground Zero site on 9-7-11 in my current work capacity, which is remotely related. I was honored. I wouldn’t say I’m a person who is easily impressed, having said that, I was very impressed with the site.
The people who work there take immense pride in their work. A guy we were with would say:
“I want to show you to see this.”
“You have to see this.”
(enthusiasm is infectious)
It’s hard to describe how I felt. I was struck really and it was very human.
We saw “the Survivor Tree”. We even stepped into the museum briefly which houses the “Triads“, it is still very much under construction, prior to that we had our faces stuck to the window.
I took some pictures, but they don’t nearly capture the scale. (an understatement)
We were asked upon entering not to take pictures of the inscriptions of victims names along the North and South Pool Rails. You know, that instantly made perfect sense and of course we complied.
I was truly honored to have the chance to see the site.
I think it will be well received by the public.
