Our lifestyles, including our work and those things we do just to "live"(for example cleaning the cave), have been changed to require less physical effort I don't completely agree with this. I think it also has to do with WHAT we're eating. Having been to both European and Japanese cities where most people work office jobs, there is not nearly the number of fatsos you see here.
To avoid the massive weight gains, people should nip it in the bud. It's a lot easier to lose 10 pounds than it is to lose 30. Keep an eye on yourself and when those pants start getting a bit tight, make it a priority to get the weight OFF. Right away.

I weighed 205 and got down to 133 at one point. Of course then everyone said I was "too thin." I wasn't eating much meat and was eating healthier than I ever had. I'm heavier now and everyone thinks I look better than I did back at 133 but after having been sick for two years, I don't care if I am heavier. I'm not unhealthily so (158 at 5'7" tall) and I don't agonize over it any more. A lot of that is fluid that's accumulated around my trunk area and I can't do much about that at the present time. I know I need to exercise and will when I'm ready to do so, if only to get my body moving again and not be so darn stiff. Discipline is the answer, lower portions, more movement---makes all the difference in the world. It's time fat people quit making excuses for their lack of the above. IT CAN BE DONE! Do it for your own sake, please.

Until I started taking meds for a pitituary tumor I always thought my problem was lack of will power. However, without trying, I have dropped almost 20 lbs in 3 months.
Most of the problem is still too much sitting and not enough doing!

I hope you weren't saying that sarcastically. This young woman has worked very hard over the last three years to slim down to a very nice size, after being over 200 lbs. since her middle teens. I wasn't, or not very much anyway. Like I said, I've been there and done that. I understand the hard work part, believe me.
I've been overweight since early grade school, I'm 52 now, with the exception of several losing & gaining episodes. At least 8 cycles of the yo-yo, often, about every other time, rising higher than the previous high weight
So no, I wasn't being sarcastic, but just saying that reaching your weight goal is only the first, and usually easiest step. Each failure makes the next attempt that much harder too, so encourage her, so she never has that first failure. I truly wish her well.

As someone that is very overweight, it is very hurtful to hear people making fun of those of us that are fat. Overeating is typically a symptom of depression, which is a mental disease. So, telling someone to just "snap out of it" is very hurtful and stupid at the same time. You cannot begin to lose weight until you can fight your depression. It is a Catch 22 because once you finally are able to start fighting depression, you decide to try to get out and get a life, and the bias against fat people is very much out there. I have felt it numerous times myself. That makes it all the harder to get out and get involved in things that will help your mental state.

Before you choose surgery, try Weigh Watchers.
It worked for me. I don't exercise, just watch fat intake and count the 'points' in all that I eat.

Always questioned the famine notion. Might be true in the very short term but if you put less in than you take out something has to give. i.e. you loose weight.

I struggle to keep my weight at the healthiest amount--I weigh 145 and am 5'6" tall, but a lot of my weight is muscle from my work, and I am consistently thought to be thin...Age-related diabetes runs in my family, so in order to avoid the complications of that disease, I eat VERY carefully, and make every bit count, nutritionally. I do have my weaknesses, and I avoid them. Nothing spoils my appetite faster than thinking of being blind, or losing a foot, or having a heart attack related to diabetes.
My doctor, a middle-aged mom, did say that there are some people who have a metabolism that turns just about everything to fat, unless they really struggle (she struggles, too).

But I have no doubt that there is a small portion of those that are overweight that it is indeed genetic. Yep, my excess weight is entirely due to the genes. I have a genetically ingrained predisposition to Gluttony and Sloth.
Plus five other genes coded for Pride, Anger, Luxury, Avarice, and Lust.
