I saw a reference on another thread to a high school whose mascot is a bomber. This is great and so, so non-PC. Bombs away, gang.

I believe that the bomb they were named for is the atom bomb.

My brother-in-law, when he was a pipefitter in Washington, had done work on the nearby Hanford plant.

Richland, WA is one of the Tri-Cities of Washington (Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco), and the home of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Richland was built and developed to house the workers at the Hanford Site. The Tri-Cities are located in SE Washington and the conflux of the Snake and Columbia Rivers. Kennewick is also the site of "The Kennewick Man."

Hanford's history includes the developement of the Atomic Bomb - hence, the Bomber's name. They have a history of High School Championship Teams.

Go Bombers!

Of course, the picture is of a B-17 and not a B-29, which actually dropped the bomb... (another pointless geek factoid)

"My sister and her family still live in Kennewick."

Do they know James Chatters? He Lives there. He is the Anthropologist/Archaeologist that did all the work on Kennewick Man.

On either side of the word "Wildcats," they're not daisies. Oak Ridge, Tennessee, home of Y-12, X-10, and K-25. "The Secret City." "The City Behind the Fence." The pillboxes and bunkers that guarded the entrance to the plants are still in place - I drive by a couple of them every day on the way to and from work. Bumper stickers all over the place, "If there hadn't been a Pearl Harbor, there wouldn't have been a Hiroshima." Talking with the older folks in my parents church - the ones who were young and determined during in the early desperate hours of WWII - "I was at work when Mr. Oppenheimer came in..." Or "We were sitting at dinner when so and so brought Albert Einstein to the table to introduce us." "We didn't know what we were working on - each of us had our own little bit to do - but we all knew that it was important, and could maybe win the war." And so were born Fatman and Little Boy.

Stole the little picture from a peacenik site. Heck, they said I could have it. It's time to get to bed, have to get my daughter up in a couple hours and I finally finished my algebra homework. I apologize for rambling above.

My favorite Tri-Cities t-shirt is "In case of power failure, stand next to me. I glow in the dark."

The airplane shown is the b-17 "Days Pay" which a number of workers at Hanford contributed a days pay to purchase. It was purchased in 1944 and saw action with the 8th Airforce in Europe.

The plane portrayed is indeed a B-17 and is part of the current RHS Administration's attempt to ignore their roots and teach the kids that they were named "Bombers" after the "Day's Pay" B-17 that was purchased by the Hanford Construction Camp workers. No connection can be documented between "Day's Pay" and Richland, let alone Richland High School, but that apparently doesn't matter. The students voted to change their nickname to "Bombers" at a Pep Assembly on Oct. 12, 1945 during the community euphoria after the dropping of the Nagasaki bomb made from Plutonium produced at the Hanford Plant. The 1945-1946 Annual contained a Foreword with a B-29 silhouette and a dedication to the Atomic Bomb. In 1989, the students voted to adopt the "Mushroom Cloud/Block letter R" as the official symbol of Richland High School. For the last 10 years, the Administration has been teaching the kids they were named after "Day's Pay" and almost all the kids believe it now.
