Demjanuk was on trial in Israel for being the camp guard known as Ivan the Terrible, a murderous SOB. He got off by proving he had been a camp guard at a different concentration camp.

Unfortunately, as in the U.S., the Israeli justice system let him off on a technical matter, namely that the charge against him wasn't correct. He had been a guard at another concentration camp at the time in question and therefore was not Ivan the terrible.

The Israeli trial was trying to pin him as being the sadistic murderer Ivan the Terrible from Treblinka. The witnesses were unreliable, and the evidence deemed suspect enough that the Israeli court acquitted (to their credit) him.
