With the March 5 primary closing in, former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan's lead over his opponents for the Republican gubernatorial nomination has diminished dramatically during the past month, according to a poll by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC).

The statewide poll shows Riordan ahead of businessman Bill Simon Jr. by 41 percent to 24 percent, with California Secretary of State Bill Jones at 9 percent. Most of the other 26 percent are undecided, with some favoring minor candidates. A PPIC poll in January showed Riordan with 41 percent, Jones with 13 percent and Simon with just 5 percent...

Sorry, Bill. Keeping your word and not stabbing friends in the back appears to be important.

which Bill has caused a problem for you?

BTW, do you have suggestions on Lieutenant Gov (i.e. Michaels or McPherson - I am not inclined to vote for a 'singer/songwriter' but would appreciate your comments).

Also, what about Secretary of State (i.e. Marr or Schaefer or Olberg)?

Also, what about Treasurer (i.e. Conlon or Toman)?

And finally, what about Insurance Commissioner (i.e. Bannister, Stitch or Mendoza)?

It seems like there are bunch of 'Pubbies running this time that I haven't heard of before.

We are in the depths of cold dark winter, yet I hear birds chirping...

and there's that smell of spring in the air!

Lo! Is that a ray of sunshine I see breaking through the clouds?

Is it.....morning again in California?

This is cool! No matter who the nominee, Davis has only about 40% support! Good grief! -- even Jones is within striking distance!

There don't seem to be many articles on the candidates for the other offices, but Lt. Gov is important for grooming for future candidates for Governor.

Although I too was initially worried about choosing a candidate who calls herself a "singer/songwriter," I certainly don't want a Riordon-like Lt. Gov. who is too liberal on many issues.

There was an article a few days ago without many comments
CA GOP senator faces hurdles in lieutenant governor race (McPherson Favored in Primary)
San Jose Mercury News | 16 February 2002 | Ken McLaughlin

State Sen. Bruce McPherson's strategy seems simple enough: Win the Republican primary for lieutenant governor, team up with gubernatorial candidate Richard Riordan, then convince California voters that their moderate tandem is just the ticket.

Aside from a Riordan victory, all that stands in McPherson's way is a singer-songwriter turned political neophyte.

And a couple of other things, too: an electorate that doesn't necessarily vote for tickets and one of the most powerful Latino politicians in the country.

McPherson, a lifelong Santa Cruz resident, faces Ellie Michaels, 51, of Thousand Oaks, in the March 5 primary. Michaels, a former Santa Clara Valley resident, is best known for penning the song ``No Child Left Behind,'' played repeatedly during President Bush's 2000 presidential campaign.

Given his political experience and party endorsements -- including Riordan's -- McPherson is heavily favored to defeat Michaels. But in the November election he would face Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who has no Democratic primary challenger.

...
Later in the article, the author noted that
For conservatives, Michaels offers an anti-abortion, pro-gun and anti-gay-rights alternative to
McPherson, a fiscal conservative who favors strict gun control and gay and abortion rights.

But at the recent state Republican convention in San Jose, where conservatives dominated, Michaels garnered only 214 votes in a straw poll. McPherson got 647 votes.

I guess I am going to be voting for a 'singer/songwriter' for Lt. Gov. Thanks for the article, I will be sure to tell my family and friends to vote for her too.

do you have suggestions on Lieutenant Gov, etc.

I have a call in to some people I trust in Jim Patterson's campaign for Congress in the new 21st Congressional district in California. (He is a Reagan conservative who was the last mayor of Fresno.)

So I have my feelers out to get some info on the state races, now that I have wrapped up figuring out who I am voting for locally. I'll get back to you with any info I glean, and hope others will tell us what they know about the statewide offices.

The real statistic are the 26% UNDECIDEDS. Its not looking real good for Dickie Pooh and after spending all this cash, he still hasn't broken the 50% barrier. Go figure.

I would say that the polls indicate that Riordan has hit his peak, his maximum. The 26% are for Simon to pick up (since it looks like Jones is toast). It seems that because of Riordan's heavy spending on ads, and his relatively better name-ID, he should have pealed off whatever of the 26% undecided he can expect to get. I suspect it is highly unlikely that Jones would drop out of the race, and endorse Simon. However, it is within the realm of possibility that Simon can overtake Riordan to make it a very tight race. That's something I wouldn't have expected a couple of weeks ago.

Why? Four factors interest me. Honesty. Conservative values. Electability. Maturity.

For the Controller race, both Andal and McClintock are conservative, and both are great candidates, so I am having trouble deciding. McClintock may be more widely known, helping his November chances.
Bonaparte: Why McClintock instead of Andal?

Who will everyone choose for
Secretary of State,
Treasurer, and/or
Insurance Commisioner?

Or, if there is already a thread discussing these offices, please share the page.

Secretary of State: Keith Olberg
Treasurer: Mary Toman
Insurance Commissioner: Wes Bannister

Why McClintock over Andal? I just happen to like him better. He's also running a lot stronger than Andal on a lot less money. GOP polling (Moore) has him about 20 points up on Andal. He won the primary for the same office back in '94 against even tougher money.
