With the March 5 primary closing in, former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan's lead over his opponents for the Republican gubernatorial nomination has diminished dramatically during the past month, according to a poll by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC).
The statewide poll shows Riordan ahead of businessman Bill Simon Jr. by 41 percent to 24 percent, with California Secretary of State Bill Jones at 9 percent. Most of the other 26 percent are undecided, with some favoring minor candidates. A PPIC poll in January showed Riordan with 41 percent, Jones with 13 percent and Simon with just 5 percent...

BTW, do you have suggestions on Lieutenant Gov (i.e. Michaels or McPherson - I am not inclined to vote for a 'singer/songwriter' but would appreciate your comments).
Also, what about Secretary of State (i.e. Marr or Schaefer or Olberg)?
Also, what about Treasurer (i.e. Conlon or Toman)?
And finally, what about Insurance Commissioner (i.e. Bannister, Stitch or Mendoza)?
It seems like there are bunch of 'Pubbies running this time that I haven't heard of before.
and there's that smell of spring in the air!
Lo! Is that a ray of sunshine I see breaking through the clouds?
Dare I say it?
Is it.....morning again in California?
Although I too was initially worried about choosing a candidate who calls herself a "singer/songwriter," I certainly don't want a Riordon-like Lt. Gov. who is too liberal on many issues.
State Sen. Bruce McPherson's strategy seems simple enough: Win the Republican primary for lieutenant governor, team up with gubernatorial candidate Richard Riordan, then convince California voters that their moderate tandem is just the ticket.Later in the article, the author noted that
Aside from a Riordan victory, all that stands in McPherson's way is a singer-songwriter turned political neophyte.
And a couple of other things, too: an electorate that doesn't necessarily vote for tickets and one of the most powerful Latino politicians in the country.
McPherson, a lifelong Santa Cruz resident, faces Ellie Michaels, 51, of Thousand Oaks, in the March 5 primary. Michaels, a former Santa Clara Valley resident, is best known for penning the song ``No Child Left Behind,'' played repeatedly during President Bush's 2000 presidential campaign.
Given his political experience and party endorsements -- including Riordan's -- McPherson is heavily favored to defeat Michaels. But in the November election he would face Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who has no Democratic primary challenger.
...
For conservatives, Michaels offers an anti-abortion, pro-gun and anti-gay-rights alternative to
McPherson, a fiscal conservative who favors strict gun control and gay and abortion rights.
But at the recent state Republican convention in San Jose, where conservatives dominated, Michaels garnered only 214 votes in a straw poll. McPherson got 647 votes.
I have a call in to some people I trust in Jim Patterson's campaign for Congress in the new 21st Congressional district in California. (He is a Reagan conservative who was the last mayor of Fresno.)
So I have my feelers out to get some info on the state races, now that I have wrapped up figuring out who I am voting for locally. I'll get back to you with any info I glean, and hope others will tell us what they know about the statewide offices.

Good, I was hoping it wasn't going to be bad news about Simon cuz that's who I want to vote for.

Witty Bump.
Why? Four factors interest me. Honesty. Conservative values. Electability. Maturity.
Or, if there is already a thread discussing these offices, please share the page.
Why McClintock over Andal? I just happen to like him better. He's also running a lot stronger than Andal on a lot less money. GOP polling (Moore) has him about 20 points up on Andal. He won the primary for the same office back in '94 against even tougher money.
