(Israeli) Army Issuing 40,000 Handgun Permits
Israel National News.com ^ | 3/6/02 | Staff Writer

The government is taking immediate steps to put more licensed handguns on the streets in the hope of citizens being in the “right place at the right time” to prevent terror attacks. Senior police officials have acknowledged that in several cases of late, citizens prevented continuing bloodshed by using their licensed weapons against terrorists.

The army will be issuing handgun permits to 40,000 reserve duty officers of the rank of captain and above. Permit will also be granted to former combatants from commando units, and retired police and Prison Authority officers.

Officials estimate the actions could result in an additional 60,000 handguns on the streets nationwide.

Police Chief Shlomo Aharonishki acknowledged that citizens have taken the initiative and brought terror attack to a halt, but he added, he remains concerned over a situation in which citizens with licensed weapons may be “too light on the trigger”.

Ministry of the Interior officials report that since the start of the Oslo War on Sept. 29, 2000, there has been an 80% increase in the number of licensed handguns nationwide, pointing out that in 2001, 4,588 permits were issued as opposed to 2,550 in 2000. Ministry officials add there are currently 340,000 licensed handguns nationwide, 265,000 of which are issued to private individuals.

We should implement this policy in Pittsburgh.

Our politicians should have this worry.

They would have to modify the criteria for issuing the permit, or it won't be as effective as in israel. America doesn't have quite as many people (percentage wise) in the reserves.

How many citizens are there in Israel? That's how many gun permits they should issue.

If I lived in Israel, I would not only carry a gun, I would get one of those German trained, German shepherds that snif for bombs. I would use it like a seeing eye dog.

~~~~~~~~~
It's 5 bucks for the PERMIT TO PURCHASE, Not the permit to carry. You actually need a special permit just to purchase a handgun these days.
Right you are. And I intend to get two at the 'Big Shew' in Raleigh (Fairgrounds) in May.
Right. Permit-to-carry is about $80.00. (They were doing a brisk business at the Sheriff's office for CCW's too).
Israel has a civil guard consisting of 55,000 men and women volunteers. They are trained to use .30 cal USGI WWII vintage M1 Carbines and Motorola walkie talkies. They patrol in groups of three and four on foot and in police vehicles. Individually selected members are part of the emergency response teams who carry carbines, 15 round mags of 110 grain jacketed soft point ammo and identification vests which they keep at home. They respond immediately, 24/7 at the scene of any emergency requiring a police presence.---Soldier of Fortune, Dec 2001
If you are getting a CCW permit next, what is the 5 dollar permit for? Do you need a permit to own a handgun in your state? If so you're not far enough from New Jersey.
