May 29, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - The D.C. medical examiner yesterday ruled Chandra Levy was murdered - but said her remains showed no signs of "a gunshot, stab wound or beating." Medical Examiner Jonathan Arden said it was difficult to say if Levy had been strangled, since he had only her bones to examine.
But other medial experts later said that because the other possible causes of death had been ruled out, strangulation is now a more likely possibility.
Meanwhile, Arden revealed that Levy's skull, which was fractured, had been damaged sometime after her death and, therefore, the injury did not contribute to it. He did not elaborate on how or when the skull fracture may have occurred.
Arden admitted that one factor working against investigators was the fact that no apparent hairs, fibers or blood were found on Levy's clothing, which will be sent to the FBI crime lab for further analysis.
Police also are still scouring the scene for a favorite ring and bracelet that Levy usually wore. They have not turned up her keys, either, suggesting that robbery may have been a motive for the killing or - more chillingly - a sicko serial killer may have kept the items as "trophies" of his conquest, sources said.
Arden said he concluded that Levy was murdered based on the overall circumstances in which her body was found.
D.C Police Chief Charles Ramsey said that in addition to the clothing, there was a lot of evidence recovered at the crime scene that will soon be sent to an FBI forensics lab for DNA tests and other analysis.
Ramsey, whose department has taken heat for its handling of the case, publicly vowed, "We will solve this case - I guarantee you that."
A number of Levy's co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances, as well as members of her health club, are expected to be reinterviewed as detectives continue to pursue the case.
They include Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.), who has admitted to an affair with Levy but who cops say is not a suspect.
At a press conference, Arden said that, "In this case, there was not sufficient evidence to ascertain conclusively the specific injury that caused her death.
"However, the circumstances of her disappearance and her body on recovery are indicative that she died through the acts of another person, which is the definition of a homicidal manner of death.
"It's possible we will never know specifically how she died."
Levy family lawyer Billy Martin said the main basis for the homicide ruling was that "somebody went to extraordinary means to conceal Chandra's body."
Levy, 24, disappeared sometime in the afternoon of May 1, 2001.
Her body was discovered a week ago in a remote wooded incline in Rock Creek Park by a man walking his dog.
Levy's skeletal remains, workout clothes and Reebok sneakers were also found at the scene, along with a knotted leotard that has led cops to conclude she was tied up before she died.
Detectives are pursing the possibility that Levy was either lured into the park by someone she knew or was stalked by a methodical sexual predator.
How about combining the two? It could be she was lured into the park by a methodical sexual predator whom she already knew. I can think of someone who fits the killer's profile perfectly.

Chandra's killer, Gary Condit, and his mouthpiece, Mark Geragos.
On Hannity and Colmes, Anne surely left an impression that maybe even someone else from Congress might be involved.
Too bad the Levys were advised to hire Martin the Lawyer instead of a PI so that the body might have been found earlier. Also, hiring a laywer made some of us suspect that Chandra had run away and would need a lawyer.
At the time she went missing my husband and I were saying that we would have been every day at the park searching for her.
My uneducated guess is that she was lured to the park, taken to a remote abandoned warehouse type place, killed, then her body immersed in some type of lime solution, (hence the reason for no blood, fiber, etc., at the scene)and her bones scattered in the area some time after they searched that area in the park.
If she had been there when they were searching, the odor of decaying flesh would have been overwhelming and the dogs would have discovered her.
What Ramsey didn't say. "Contacts in the government have assured me that as soon as they can get everything set up properly, they will provide the information to us as needed to stack the case against a pre-picked scapegoat, so that we can please the Levy family and the general (voting) public. "
My vote for the best theory so far, and one that seems to fit the apparent evidence. Her personal effects were probably cast down the side of the hill to help make things look good.
He was having an affair with her. He was probably cooperating, then stopped. His wife knew about Chandra, so there was nothing to keep him from stopping the flow of information. Chandra is killed. Condit is exposed. He starts to cooperate again. Then for some reason stops. The body turns up mysteriously. Then, he starts to cooperate again, which the cause of death is eliminated, as well as a new suspect is named. This is all going to go away very nicely, as you can tell how up til now it's been handled by officer donut butt.
It's okay that he gets away with murder I guess, I mean should members of congress and the senate all be exposed, we'd probably find out where a lot of missing people are going. You see, this is systemic, it's everywhere. We have people in office right now who are not only criminals, but are willing to kill or have people killed to hide it. This is why term limits, ONE TERM ONLY should be enacted. That way we can get rid of these people once and for all. Of Course, None of these people would vote for it, because what have we learned about power? It corrupts, thoroughly, and totally.
Her appearance should certainly stir-up some questions with her comments about Condidit's knotted ties under his bed. So when is someone going to ask sGary what those were for? hmmmm???...while he's hooked-up to a polygraph and facing Connie Chung again!!
