Less than one week after beginning a new general election ad touting his own record, Gov. Gray Davis is taking to the airwaves in an effort to do damage to his GOP opponent, Bill Simon. Following is the text of the ad and an analysis by Bee Political Editor Amy Chance.

Riordan tried this same smear once he realized he was going to lose the nomination. It didn't work then and it won't work now, but I'm happy to see Davis is in desperation mode this early in the campaign!!

The Sacramento Bee deserves a rare bit of credit for running this analysis. It totally demolishes Gray Davis's smear campaign.

Some of the liberal media's articles and editorials attacking Davis this past month or two have been so devastating, you have to wonder if they haven't decided to toss him off the back of the sleigh. It seems to me that it's more than just a plot to get all the bad news out early.

I think we have reached a point where they could no longer maintain credibilty (if they ever had any) if they didn't report this stuff.

They're trying to make Gray Davis look good by running a 9 year old story that's old news. Typical Rat trick; change the subject when you're behind.

It seems that Davis' internal polls must not be so hot if they're running an ad like this. If it doesn't work, they'll find something else even worse to fabricate/distort.

I saw this last night on TV and immediately thought 'Gray Davis is getting behind and has what,25 million dollars ( or some sick amount of $$$) to put into negative TV ADS. I knew right away that this is a smear.I think the majority of Californians remember having their rates skyrocket last summer. Our business surely does!I can't wait to say "Goodbye 'RED DAVIS' " out loud ,and he is A RED,this is what my business colleagues call him,'Red Davis'.He also wants to raise 'Our Taxes',even higher. He really is a 'very small and bad human'.

Doesn't seem like ol' Gray is very proud of this one - it's not on his web site yet.

(His web site is worth looking at, if nothing else because it's about as inspiring as the man himself.)

That being said, most of the S&L industry went bust at about the same time, and it's not at all surprising that some honest operators went down. I seem to remember one of the best-managed thrifts (I think it was Glendale Federal) was tossed to the wolves due to this same change, and I believe they did win their suit against the government.

The Sacramento Bee deserves a rare bit of credit for running this analysis.

Before I read the contents of the article, I thought it would be even more smear against Simon because of the title. Many regular people will not read beyond the titles of articles in which they're not interested, so the SacBee still helps Davis somewhat.

I, too, was surprised by the "balanced and fair" reporting of the Sacramento Bee.

However, while it would be nice to think that the liberal media would dump Davis because of his obvious corruption, methinks that would be a lot of wishful thinking. The liberal media would NEVER want a pro-life conservative in office like Bill Simon. While Bill Simon is a businessman, he is also a Christian (though he doesn't "wear it on his sleeve", so to speak). He has made emphatic statements about the culture of life, against gay marriage, and for gun ownership. I think the liberal media would much rather have Davis -- corruption included.

I think the media is "trying" to be fair now when the public isn't paying attention to the election, and they'll jam Simon after Labor Day.

Go Simon!

The SacBee goal here was to get simple and Simon in the same headline, IMHO.

Simple Simon or Doofus Davis

What the 'Left' is hoping the voters see as their 'choice' in November?

We can't let that happen. The real 'choice' is between 'Sensible and Super' SIMON and 'Dense and Devious' Doofus.

"Simon's mismanagement cost depositors millions -- and the bailout for his mistakes cost taxpayers $90 million more."

Gray Davis is one to talk about "mismanagement". What has his incompetence cost the citizens of California...so far?

Thirty billion-or-so?

Good! I'm glad you spotted this and indexed it! I saw it this AM while slumming through the Busy BEE.

You know... if the dominant liberal media continues to keep jammin their liberal slant down people's throat, eventually they could be treated as shabbily as the ruling class during the French Revolution when the worm finally turns against them.

It'll be the demise of the DemonicRats, too!!!
