State budget writers must quickly get creative

GOV. Gray Davis was criticized for waiting too long to address the energy crunch that bedeviled California last year. Events in Sacramento this week are beginning to show the same thing has happened with the state's budget.

Lawmakers are struggling to come up with an overdue budget for the current year. Democrats have proposed program cuts (6,000 jobs would be axed), tax increases, and borrowing to deal with a projected $23 billion deficit. The plan approximates the cut, tax and borrow ratios used by a former Republican governor, Pete Wilson, when he faced a similar budget crisis.

Republicans should reject the well-intentioned media advice on the budget - and insist on spending cuts, tax cuts, and a permanent spending limit. With NO tax increases. QED.

CA can't meet it's budget for services to it's citizens, but can always afford services to illegal aliens. Our schools are overcrowded with illegals at a cost of $8,000+ per student. Many public hospital have over 60% births (free) to little citizens sired by illegals. A third of our prisoners are illegals. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Of course anyone reading FR who's even halfway awake has known this for months. It's nice to see the mainstream media taking notice at last.

Trouble is, the legislature follows Gray Davis' lead, and I fear Davis was not elected for his creativity; I don't think he has any, actually.

Simon will win because the people believe he is a good man, not because of what the media parrots daily from the GraYout handlers...

The media will be pissed , of course, and we will have glorious years of theatrics in California as the left-wing wackoes in the state legislature and bureaucracy do battle with Simon and the rising rightward push.

The poor and the illegals will flock to Simon, I just have a feeling they can empathize with Simon and see thru all the attacks ads and lies. Call me silly, its just a feeling. Could be a bad burrito too ;-) IMO.

Why is this bad news? This is good news! Virtually every state agency is bloated and could use a good audit and re-organization. So many agencies duplicate efforts, have phantom employees, waste resources, and have incompetent staff. (Not all ... there are some state employees who are fabulous, I know some, but the fact is that the lazy employees outweigh the good, hard-working ones ... and the hard-working employees are often frustrated because they can't change the status quo.)
