Anybody watching the US Open. I thought the opening was really moving. Aretha Franklin is a great singer and I really enjoyed the whole flag ceremony. It's a great event because its in NY city and the final is ALL AMERICAN, on both the Mens and Womens sides.
The whole event was a the antidote to the whole whining reparations rally in Washington a few weeks ago. The world is tuning it to watch Black excellence. Excellenct in tennis, excellence in singing with both Aretha and the Harlems Boys Choir. America loves excellence, a great attitude and hard work. Really, no one gives a damn if your Black if you can do the job and do it well.
The Marines were awesome. Our Marines. I am so proud every time I see them. How can you not be.
Our Flag! It always makes me happy to see it.
Anybody else watching this??

My wife is watching in the other room and will keep me posted.
Our Flag! It always makes me happy to see it.
I couldn't care less about tennis, but I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.

The Williams girls are great talents. It would be nice to see them, just once, play hard against one another. It always looks as if they'd rather be anywhere else in the world when they play each other.
To: Friedrich Hayek
So far it looks like they are both trying hard. I think it's getting to be a bit of a grudge match.

You live up to your handle! :-)
To: Jack Black
Hopefully it will be as exciting as the Agassi/Hewitt matchup earlier today.
That said, I'm betting the house on Williams tonight!
...
Took about 9 break point opportunities for Serena to break Venus. 4-3, Serena now serving...here's Venus' first opportunity to break...converts on the second break point. 4-all now
Serena wins first set 6-4 with an ACE.
To: Jack Black
Did anyone notice what Martina said? I couldn't catch it all, but it sounded like an anti-American slam.

Pertaining to the Amelie Mauresmo-Venus Williams match, she said that the crowd didn't back the American as much as they should have, but rather cheer on the underdog because of the dominance of the Williams sisters. Something like that.
Serena up a break in the 2nd with a 2-1 lead, now serving.
Serena now up TWO breaks in the 2nd with a 4-1 lead, now serving.
Venus breaks Serena, Venus holds her serve. Serena serving at 4-3 now.

Serena Wins !!! 3 GRAND SLAMS IN A ROW !!!
SERENA- 6 6 *
VENUS - 4 3 Serena wins on 3rd championship point. 3 STRAIGHT SLAMS FOR SERENA!
To: CounterCounterCulture
Yes, she said the fans should remember that the Williams are Americans and root for them. She said you would never go to France and see the French root for a US player over a French one.
She also said she felt it had nothing to do with race but rather with the utter dominance of the Williams sisters.
To: CounterCounterCulture
Venus had flashes of brillance but couldn't put her game together. She needs to get her serve straightened out. Maybe slow it down 10mph on the first. She seemed to play better from behind, so there is a emotional aspect to her game that is off I think.
Tomorrow is going to be awesome. Agassi vs. Sampras !!!
To: Jack Black
Lots more American flags! About 20 on the court.
"resiliancy of New York, Williams sisters have raised the bar of Womens Tennis"
$375,000 to Venus, the runner up.
$900,000 to Serena.
To: Jack Black
$900,000 can buy a lot of those "cat-suits" that hug Serena's finest curves. ;-)
To: Jack Black
"Really, no one gives a damn if your Black if you can do the job and do it well.
Not that that had anything to do with Spike Lee's sudden interest in tennis...
I've never been a fan of chick's tennis until the Williams Sisters came along. They've made the game exciting (and I'm not just talking about Serena's outfit), just as the men's game has gotten boring. I love Hewlett for his attitude, but his game is a bore.
Those cross-court backhands that Serena nailed are ungodly, and that Venus can still play serve and volley means that tennis is not yet dead.
Too bad Venus couldn't put up a better fight. It might seem that she did ok, and that she battled hard, but 2-0 don't do it. Entertaining, and enchanting, nevertheless.
Congratulations, Serena.

The Williams sisters are exciting to watch - I just wish they were more feminine and less manly.
And I think I might watch the Agasi/Samparas final tomorrow. Not bad for a couple of over-30 guys.

more feminine and less manly
You obviously didn't see the interviews w/ Billie Jean King and Martina Nava-whatz-her-name.
Now, the Williams' aren't exactly delicate. But maybe you'd rather watch Kornikova chase b*tch shots?
I'd say the Williams sisters are paragons of the modern female: strong, feminine & winners -- and never, ever whiners.
Elsehwere, OMG, the USTP Prez is an idiot. Did he really say that he wants to bring tennis "to the people?" [How's that for the unmanly?] What an ass. All he needed to do to be more patronizing was to put his fist up in a Black Panther's Salute, a la Jane Fonda. Lord help us.
The Chase/Morgan Prez did much better. He actually didn't make an ass of himself, which is rare in such ceremonies.

I'd say the Williams sisters are paragons of the modern female: strong, feminine & winners -- and never, ever whiners. When they were still losing they'd whine plenty - about who the crowd would cheer for (with the racial implication), about various, questionable illness they'd suffer when they started to lose, etc.
And I still remember (though don't remember the details) them making an absurd allegation about a random draw being fixed by the tennis association to keep black players out of tournaments.
They are plenty likable now, but it's easy to be that way when your winning.

Whiners? I meant "baseliners," "baseliners." Or something like that.
Standing corrected. Been enjoying the show lately, though.

As a tennis player of 30 years I can tell you Serena was keeping her sister in the match. The problem is that she doesn't fake missing ponts well. She still won in two sets!
I remember watching them when they were 7-9. Cute kids then with a love for the game as well.
I am glad for their success and my best to them.
I think these all-american finals in singles were due to an effor of determination because of 9-11.
Does my heart good to see an all USA final in both singles divions.

No - I did not see the interview with the 2 dyke former tennis champions. Venus & Serena are far more attractive than either of them.
As for Anna K - she is pretty good at doubles from what I understand - think her and her partner got beat in the finals at Wimbledon by the Williams sisters. But she is just not that good at singles play - maybe never will be.
I watch tennis occasionally - but not too much. I can't believe that some serves are around 140 mph. that is crazy.
