Tony says:   "The TV news outlets then picked up [the 'Daisy Girl' ad] and showed it incessantly."

That is urban legend. The ad was so controversial that it was shown only once and then pulled. I was there and remember it well.   (see for instance)

I said it was run once as a commercial. It's documented fact that the news programs then showed it as part of their reporting on how controversial it was. The net result was that lots of people saw it.

RIGHT ... dont run the ads.

There is a major problem with Simon's campaign: It was correct to have a component be about Davis' corruption and his cash=n=carry Governorship. But by focussing on it too much, Simon has not had the bandwidth and money to also make the case as to why he is BETTER on the budget, the education policies, energy, and compare Davis' social extremism to Simon's family-oriented moderate/conservative views. THESE ISSUES, NOT DAVIS CORRUPTION are need to *win* votes among independents ... Corruption just makes people realize who to vote 'against'. But Davis' negatives are sky high already. Focussing on corruption can be done by the media.

... Simon's challenge is really to overcome Davis' painting of Simon as an extremist and to defend and attack and show he is better on the ISSUES. It's hard to do with limited funding, so Simon in my opinion should focus his money on the top issues where Davis leads but is vulnerable: Eduation and budget. ESPECIALLY EDUCATION - IF SIMON CAN EXPLAIN HOW DAVIS HAS FAILED ON EDUCATION HE WOULD WIN THE ELECTION, BUT IF DAVIS KEEPS HIS POLLING ADVANTAGE ON THAT ISSUE, DAVIS WINS. SAD BUT TRUE - VOTERS ACTUALLY GIVE DAVIS HIGH MARKS THERE! THEY SHOULD NOT! JMHO.

I agree with you... subtle innuendos and public sentiment fouling as the race boils over will toast Davi$' legacy to a crisp as a 1-term governorship that hastened the fall of the once great Golden State and fiddled for campaign dollars while it burned.

Court unseals documents naming Davis in fund-raising case
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 28, 2002 | Alexa H. Bluth

A federal judge ordered the release Monday of documents from a decade-old fraud and racketeering case in which a convicted felon implicated Gov. Gray Davis in a bribery scheme.
Perhaps the documents will be released tomorrow! Davis' intimidation tactics are so transparent. Fire Davis!

"Davis spokesman Roger Salazar said that Simon had shown that he is willing to trumpet reckless charges, citing false accusations that Davis illegally accepted a campaign check in the state Capitol."

Obviously overlooking their own ads that cited false accusations against Simon's company's legal case.

O ``They don't care whether these things are true or not,'' Salazar said. ``They're just looking to do as much damage as possible.''

Does Davis represent the pot calling the kettle black or what. This is his quid pro quo MO that generates big campaign contributions for the sleezy SOB. This article explains how Davis milks his money machine.

I hope enough people are thoroughly disgusted with Davis to defeat him in spite of Simon's weak anti-sleeze campaign.
