After each general election, Daniel Weintraub, The Bee's public affairs columnist, and the editorial board of The Bee invite some of the state's leading political figures, campaign strategists and polling experts to discuss how the election was won or lost. This year seven experts gathered on Nov. 7, two days after the election, to share their insights.
The participants were Garry South, chief campaign strategist for Gov. Gray Davis; Sal Russo, senior campaign strategist for Bill Simon; Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll; Sen. Jim Brulte, Republican leader in the state Senate; Gary Mendoza, Republican candidate for insurance commissioner; Gale Kaufman, a Democratic political consultant who ran the campaign of Jack O'Connell for state superintendent of public instruction; Eliseo Medina, executive vice president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), western region, who has been working extensively on registering and turning out new immigrants and Latinos.
