Any attempt to raise California's sales tax would give millions of skittish consumers one more reason to delay buying anything they can live without -- from cars to clothes, DVD players to sofas -- piling more hurt on an already distressed retail industry, economic and retail experts said Wednesday.

Aww... cmon.

Go ahead Davis... raise the sales tax... you should raise it by 10%. To really bridge the budget gap and get back to the 40% spending spree that the California legislature did back in the heyday.

These economists do not know what they are talking about. Besides, where are people gonna go? Oregon? Nevada? Arizona? :) [end-sarcasm]

Gov. Gray Davis is expected in Friday's budget to propose a one percentage point sales tax increase to help pay for shifting about $6 billion in health and social programs from the state to county governments.

I love the way they worded this, it must be straight from the Camp Davis Propaganda Machine. A 1% ADDITION to the sales tax is actually a 12.5% increase above the current tax level.

Together, Together ... we will make California even better . to paraphrase Davi$ in his speech.

How much more can the legitimate and legal citizens of California take before the streets of Sacramento around the Capitol are filled with folks like Venezuelan protesters who are fighting to save their nation and letting the world know, Enough is enough.

Socialism does not work. They just don't get it.

Kalifornia Democrats have only themselves to thank. They probably say they'll pay increased sales tax and gladly, because it'll help pay down the enormous debt run up by Davis...I mean that the Bush administration's arrogance caused, without cutting into those vital welfare and envirowacko programs.

The other thing they will say is that the sales tax increase is only temporary, until the budget crisis is over.

Then, 1 year from now, it will be permanent.

We do not need to abandon ship. The liberals will be "overboard" over the next few years. This is actually going to be fun to watch, as well as, an opportunity to use the equivalent of a political Dr. Seuss book for the numb liberal friends of mine who need things explained in very simple terms. This will be a book with lots of pictures and very few words. I love it.

I agree with you about not jumping ship. California has some interesting times ahead as it comes to terms with the fact it can only spend what it takes from taxpayers. The infighting within the Democratic party will be quite funny to watch as all those liberals try to preserve their own pet projects.

Someone should have cut up Gray Davis’s credit cards a long time ago.
