Welcome to
The USO Canteen FReeper Style

Today's Spiritual Journey takes us to:

Visit Fort Rucker
Click the banner to visit Fort Rucker

Fort Rucker, Alabama is the Home of Army Aviation and the recipient of quite a few TRADOC's Installation of Excellence Awards. Known for its old-fashioned Southern hospitality, Fort Rucker covers about 64,500 acres of southeast Alabama countryside in an area known as the Wiregrass, named for a wild grass peculiar to the region.

With the consolidation of all Army Aviation flight training at Fort Rucker in 1973, the post became the mecca for Army aviators. Air Force helicopter pilots have also been trained here since 1971, as have students from more than 60 foreign countries. You can learn everything at Fort Rucker, from initial entry rotary-wing courses to advanced courses in aviation safety.

To carry out its mission, Fort Rucker supports a daytime population of about 19,000, including about 8,000 people in uniform, 7,000 civilian and contract employees, and 3,800 military family members.

23d Flying Training Squadron Home Page Ft. Rucker is home to:

23d Flying Training Squadron

Training Tomorrow's Warriors

The 23 FTS conducts Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training - Helicopter (SUPT-H) and is the Air Force's primary source of helicopter pilots for special operations, combat search and rescue (CSAR), missile support and distinguished visitor airlift missions.

Guest Military Chaplain
Rev. Jim Duhaime

America, the most blessed country in the world.  I am excited that God gave me the opportunity to be part of this country.  I thank Him every week for that and the freedom that He gave us.  As I view the world situation I see more and more the gift of freedom.  I thank God for President Bush and his stand against those who would export fear and take away those freedoms.  I thank God that He gave me the opportunity to serve this great country for the many years that I did and I know that you do too.  God bless America and God bless and protect our Commander-in-Chief.

     In my last letter I talked about prayer.  Prayer is the key.  The greatest thing you can do right now is pray.  Pray daily for the President and for those Armed Forces that are being put in harms way to fight those who would take away the freedoms of the world.  Pray for our allies.  Pray for those innocent Iraqi citizens.  Yes, even pray for those misguided Americans and other nations who protest the actions of the President.  Here are some areas that you can pray for daily.

    Pray for the President and his advisors:

            Seek God and His wisdom daily and not rely on their own understanding.  Pray for God to give our armed forces protection.

            Strong and courageous to do what is right, regardless of critics.  Pray for God to give our armed forces wisdom.

            To have the unified support of the American people as well as that of other countries around the world.  Pray for God to give our armed forces, courage.

            Their families will be safe, healthy, well-rested, and free from fear.  Pray for God to give our armed forces peace.

            Will be successful in their mission and that world peace will be realized.  Pray for God to give our armed forces strength.

            Will recognize their divine appointment, and will govern accordingly, in compassion, mercy and truth.  Pray for God to give our armed forces the help of His presence.

            Will remember to keep their eyes on almighty God and be mindful that He is in control.  Pray for God to give our armed forces unity.

* The foregoing originally appeared in the MOAA Fort Rucker Chapter's April, 2003 Bi-Monthly Newletter for Military Officers, Retired Officers and their Spouses.

The Fort Rucker Chapter of The Military Officers Association of America has served the needs of active duty and retired members of the uniformed services since it was chartered in 1959. You can visit them here.

Membership consists of men and women who are or have been commissioned or warrant officers of the seven U. S. uniformed services or the National Guard or other reserve components of these services, as well as widows or widowers of any deceased individuals who were members of Fort Rucker TROA.

Support Fisher House
The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Today's FEEBLE attempt at Humor:

To make it possible for everyone to attend church on Sunday, we are proposing to have a special 'No Excuse Sunday.'

1. Cots will be placed in the foyer for those who say,'Sunday is my only day to sleep in.'

2. They will have steel helmets for those who say, 'The roof will cave in if I ever came to church.'

3. Blankets will be furnished for those who say it is too cold and fans for those who say it is too hot.

4. There will be hearing aids for those who say, 'The pastor speaks too softly,' and cotton for those who say, 'He preaches too loudly.'

5. Scorecards will be available for those who wish to list the hypocrites present.

6. Some relatives will be in attendance for those who like to go visiting on Sunday.

7. There will be TV dinners for those who can't go to church and cook dinner too.

8. Golf clubs will be available for practice swings for those who like to golf on Sunday.

Good morning, Canteen crew and visitors!

We're finally recovering from Friday's welcome home parade and once more keeping up w/ the latest military news at the OIF thread . SOD Rumsfeld debunked a few major deceptive press campaigns with his interview on FoxNews Sunday. The CIC brushed off the international "outcry" over WMDs w/ the simple statement, "We'll find em." My favorite post of the morning, from Timeout:

 just caught another great email on The Corner at NRO...from a retired Air Force officer:
You just can't conceive of how much we love this guy. He commands an unprecedented amount of loyalty and respect among the armed forces. He not only walks the walk, he gets the trap (Navy talk). We don't think of him as a stud; he is so much more than that. He is the guy you hang with in the flight room, the guy you hunker down in the bunker with. He is the commander that is the first on the field and the last off. He is the guy you kneel down and pray with prior to putting your life on the line one more time. He is much more than a stud, he is a fighter jock. There are few in all of the armed forces who wouldn't march into Hell for him.

All,

Below is a e-mail letter from my son Karl who is in Nasiriyah, Iraq with the US Army. Karl has been in Iraq since March 25 and he is an infantryman. The e-mail talks about some of his desires to call his wife tomorrow which their second wedding anniversary:

I was really excited because then I was thinking I was going to be able to call Char on our anniversary and eat a real meal and other stuff like that. I thought that I would start typing my letters and them emailing them now that we are going to have internet access about once a week. We might even get service here at our building which would be pretty cool because then I would be able to do instant messenger with you guys and Char.

They had us go dig a ditch for the cable to cross the road, but no internet as of yet. We also went and had a phone line run over here, but no phone yet. Dad, I am sure you know how it goes with stuff like that - go and do this now and hurry up, but the work you are doing, you are pretty much doing for nothing. So I was having an ok time before they sent the other guy in my place. I was in this room with two other people, and I actually liked them both, but they are the two that they sent to Arifjan. Apparently they went back to clean and inventory our stuff, but how can they really inventory it when it is all given out - when we where coming here no one even signed for anything they drew, so how could we be accountable?

I got a package from you like 2 days ago - thanks - it was the one that had the salami and smoked salmon in it. The salami is great, and I am going to have the smoked salmon tonight for my feast. I don’t know what letters you guys have gotten from me. I wrote you guys a whole bunch a couple weeks ago - like several pages a day, but I haven’t been writing as much lately. No real new rumors or talk about when we are going to be coming home - still the July talk from the BC. All the people who don’t know any better keep saying - oh we’ll be out of here in a week, but I am not as optimistic as I used to be about it. I know whenever it is we will be about 1 ½ months from actually getting on a plane, so I know it will be a lot more of just hurry up and wait, and look busy - you know all that stuff. 1SG has really been a bigger dork than usual lately. He makes us do all this stuff for the sake of "sanitation and hygienic conditions", but there is really no way to make this place sanitary. We are in an old building with most of the glass in the windows broken, and no outside doors. We have to sweep and mop every day. Sweeping I can understand - I don’t have a problem with helping out there - we really don’t want more of a place for the fleas to live than our own clothing and bedding - but mopping - we mop with just regular water - no solvents - about 10 minutes after you mop, it looks worse than if you never mopped because all of the dust that is in the air and it sticks to the wet surface. Not to mention not having running water and the ability to wash your hands after you touch anything. Then a couple of days ago, he went on a rampage about no computers during "duty hours." Well, wouldn’t a duty hour be one where I actually have something to do to support our mission? Then I guess he figured if he made that rule he wouldn’t be able to watch movies all day which is his typical routine so he reversed it. So pretty much, I sit in my room, that I am the only one in now, play with the computer, which I have beaten all the games I brought, write letters, and then I watch a movie everyday. Actually it is pretty nice to just be away from everyone and keep to myself. Also this way I don’t really have to do all the stupid little stuff because of the out of sight out of mind rule. It hasn’t really been hot here that often, maybe one day per week - which is completely miserable, but the wind is crazy. The other night I went out on an overnight mission with another company - they needed transportation. It was so windy you would not believe it. The wind was over 30 mph with gusts to over 50. It was almost impossible to sleep. Your sleeping bag turns into a wind sock at that point. IT was also very cold, and I froze the whole night through. We are not really getting that much news either - I heard both the Cubs and Giants are doing well though - Other than that we don’t hear anything that is going on. Maybe you can tell me if something is rumor or fact - did the president say that all national guard and reserves where to be home by July 1st? This is one of the rumors running around right now. What kinds of things are they saying about sending troops home from here? Anything else on stop-loss?

We had a Marine major over here one day saying that most of the Marines would be home by June 1st and that their stop-loss ended, but that was a Marine and who really knows if they even have a brain in their heads? .. How was your trip to FL? Did you enjoy it? How is Grandma? Is she doing better than she was a couple of months ago? I have been getting a lot of packages from all kinds of people. I got one from Tom in FL, that was with you in RVN. I don’t know what RVN is, but he sent some good stuff. I got stuff from the people at free republic - snippyaboutit and kathyinalska are two that I can remember off the tops of my head - I have sent them letters every time they send a package, but maybe if you could drop them an email letting them know that I got another one last week from them, and that I appreciate it. The newspaper you sent me had an article that made a reference to free republic.com in it - I thought that was pretty neat. A couple people said they found my address on the web, and sent it to me that way. I would assume they are talking about free republic, but I am not sure where they found it.

I haven’t received any letters from Char in about 2 weeks which is pretty upsetting, but who knows with the way the mail runs around here, I could get 10 tomorrow. I was getting a couple letters from you guys every time we got mail here (every 4-5 days) but I didn’t get any letters period last time mail came. The package that I got from you took over 1 month to get here. All the others where like that too, so maybe they slowed everything down when the war started. We got a shower now - it is a canvas bag with a nozzle beneath it. It works okay, but it is a lot of work to fill up that bag with a 5 gallon jug twice to take a shower. Other than that I guess nothing else is really new. How is work going for the both of you? School is almost out mom, so that should make you happy. Hopefully this thing will be over soon and we can spend some time together before you have to go back to school. Char and I have been talking about going to San Diego for a weekend after I get home, so maybe if you guys want to, we can go down together and get in the same hotel or something. We had planned to take an alone weekend to Toronto, but I guess this SARS thing has hit Toronto, so they don’t want you going there. Is there any known cure for it, or is it just a wacko thing like West Nile that happens every so often?

you have given on behalf of this country, perhaps more people
would appreciate what they have and why they have it.

If people knew the personal sacrifice and service of the
people you love that serve to protect our shores and those
abroad, perhaps they'd take a moment to be thankful.

If people knew of your own record of sacrifice and service,
perhaps they'd appreciate why you come to pay tribute
everyday to our brave men and women.

So? Allow me to be the first TODAY to say "THANK YOU"
for your sacrifice and service to America. If someone didn't
feel the need to defend America, where would we be today?

I love that pic of President Bush. Here is the link to the same photo uploaded to my website. That photo URL will possibly die after a short time. Feel free to use this one or keep it as a backup for later if/when that URL dies . . . http://home.attbi.com/~mrgrumman/BushVictoryUSSLincoln05012003.JPG

And here are a couple more of him I like . . .

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION

The light of God surround you
The love of God enfold you
The power of God protect you
The presence of God watch over you
Wherever you are,God is,
And all is well.
Amen.

Bless This House

Bless this house O Lord we pray;
Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout,
Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall,
Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove
ever open to joy and love.

Bless these windows shining bright,
Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there,
with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within,
keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be
Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we
May dwell O Lord with thee.

(Click on praying hands above, or on banner at the top to hear the music)
