RABAT (Reuters) - At least 20 people were killed in four bomb attacks -- three of them car bombs -- in Morocco's commercial capital Casablanca on Friday night, the official MAP news agency said.
The car bomb attacks targeted the Belgian consulate, a Jewish community center and the Hotel Safir, located in the old heart of the city center.

LOL!
Not that this is funny, mind you. But I was secretly wondering when the first Casablanca quote would surface.
For all you geographically challenged folks, Casablanca is in Morocco...I'm pretty sure.

90 minutes old. 4 car bombs ripped through downtown - several dead; no count on dead/injured yet. As per CNN.

I think they all get their breaking news via Reuters or AP?

I've been wondering when Morocco would enter the news ... awfully close to Algeria where Islamic terrorism was rampant in the mid- to late-1990's ... aye carumba ...

Probably a whole lot more than that. Any decent trading desk has those, plus Bloomberg and Dow Jones wire services. So in a media control room, I would imagine they would also have AFP, and who knows what else.

A few Saudi men, with their Moroccan wives, were arrested in Morocco several months back on suspicion of being Al Qaeda. I never heard what they were doing in Morocco in the first place, or what happened to them.

This is so sad. Morrocco has a well-deserved reputation as the most laid-back and least radicalized of the Arab countries. Unfortunately, the Wahabbhis have been very busy there, of late. My wife is from Morrocco.

Probably our old friends from Algerian Islamic Jihad.
This outfit is a Qaeda ally. Some of their people have been to Afghanistan.
Hit 'em where they ain't. Go next door and pick on poor, old Berber Morroco.
Hmmm, again, car bombings. Not too impressive, unless you happen to be in the immediate vicinity, of course. However, Qaeda may be operating out of divided counsel. It is not like them to conduct daily bombings. That makes them like any run-of-the-mill Pallie bomber outfit (who, I might add, are looked on with derision and contempt by the professionals at Al Qaeda, much like a Mafia "made guy" looks at a new kid right out of the county lockup), and that would be an extreme climb down for Bin Laden and his group.
These guys specialize in operations that kill hundreds of people at the minimum and take a year, at least, to plan. There is something wrong with this picture.
I can see the Saudi thing being AQ. That has the look and feel of an AQ operating on limited resources and personnel. The Morrocco thing? I'm not so sure it's not some Algerians or local jihadi who decided that they wanted to get in on the act to show the rest of the Arabs that they have big penises, too.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

Rick Blaine: My health ... I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Louis Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick Blaine: I was misinformed.

Rick Blaine: I'm a drunkard.
Captain Louis Renault: That makes Rick a citizen of the world.

http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,6449025%255E1702,00.html Seven bomb blasts rock Casablanca
17may03
The Courier Mail
SEVERAL people were killed in at least seven bomb blasts in Casablanca today, one of which targeted a Jewish club in the town, witnesses said.
One of the bombs hit the Israelite Alliance Circle club, leaving many dead, the witnesses said.
At least six other bombs explosed in the town, Morocco's economic capital some 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Rabat.
Among the other targets hit was a Hispanic centre and a restaurant district.
The blasts caused substantial damage, sources said.
All news sources online are reporting the same story from Reuters so far.

Back a few months ago, we had the Bali bombing, and the attack on that French tanker off Yemen, and the attempt to shoot down a plane in East Africa, all within a few days of each other.
