Did Hillary Clinton Really Intern for Truehaft, The Top Lawyer for the Communist Party in the USA?

I have heard rumors about this in the past but have never seen ANY discussion in the media about it. If true, this is pretty mind-blowing...that the leading Democrat in the nation once interned for the lawyer for the Communist Party.

I wondered if any Freepers had definitive knowledge and/or sources to prove this rumor. I think if the public was aware of this, many would think quite a bit less of "her victimhood".

We haven't heard much from the first lady, lately. She's been keeping a relatively low profile. Rumors of an imminent indictment in the Whitewater case may be one reason. Her political failure in pushing through a health-care revolution in the first term may be another.

But she's coming back as the leading proponent of President Clinton's latest federal initiative -- a new government power grab in the name of "child care."

So let's get reacquainted with Hillary, shall we? What motivates her? What makes her tick?

At Wellesley, Hillary did her senior thesis on professional revolutionary Saul Alinsky. She met the leftist legend the summer before, and, as soon as she graduated, Alinksy offered her a job. She chose to attend Yale Law School instead.

Another big influence in her formative years was Marxist-Maoist theoretician Carl Oglesby, then president of the radical Students for a Democratic Society and editor of Motive, a left-wing magazine for young Methodists.

Motive was hardly a traditional church publication. During those years, it featured articles on commune life, the similarity between hallucinogenic drug trips and religious experiences, the realities of lesbianism and witch power. How influential was this publication on Hillary? Recently she told the Washington Post she still has a collection of all the back issues of Motive.

Her years at Yale were marked by her hard-core left-wing activism under the tutelage of Marian Wright Edelman. She also took a position with Robert Borosage, later a founder of the Institute for Policy Studies. When Black Panther leader Bobby Seale was on trial in New Haven for murdering a fellow Panther, Hillary and her friends were in the courtroom every day where she assisted his far-left lawyer, Charles Garry. Through Garry, Hillary met Communist Party activists Jessica Mitford and her husband, Robert Truehaft, for many years the Communist Party USA's attorney. In the summer of 1971, Hillary interned at Truehaft's Berkeley law office. Truehaft, by the way, was once described by the House Committee on Un-America Activities as one of the most "dangerously subversive" attorneys in the country.

It was through her networking with this older generation of fifth column lawyers that Hillary got her position on the House Watergate Committee and later on the boards of directors of the Children's Defense Fund and the Legal Services Corporation.

David Brock writes in "The Seduction of Hillary Clinton" that under her control, the LSC "quickly swung back to the 1960s approach of aggressively using the courts to expand the welfare system and increase governmental control over private property, and to conduct ideologically generated and driven litigation." Hillary linked the LSC with various Marxist front groups, including the National Lawyers Guild.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner recalls her tenure at the helm of the LSC: "What Hillary was doing as chairman of the board was solidifying control by the government and the bureaucracy. And they were spending taxpayer money to do it. She tried the same with health care. Back then I reached the conclusion that she is a control freak. She wants to utilize the power of the federal government to make sure she, her people, and her philosophy have control."

When President Reagan was elected and took on the LSC's use of taxpayer dollars to back left-wing political activism, Hillary led the opposition. She authorized a blatantly illegal nationwide lobbying campaign to ensure survival of the agency.

When she left the LSC in 1982, she joined the board of the New World Foundation, a leftist philanthropy that funds, among other causes, Communist insurgency movements in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

Those who know her said Hillary was a true revolutionary who disguised her militancy through her commitment to subvert the system from within. There is absolutely no reason to believe she has changed her stripes.

It is with this background that Americans should evaluate her next grand proposal -- a federal initiative on child care. Does she really care about your kids? Don't believe it. The children's liberation movement from which Hillary springs believes in using kids to gain power over their parents and society. They use children to destroy our most basic and fundamental rights.

This is the prism through which we should view her proposals. They may sound good. They may look good. But they are guaranteed to empower government and the extremist friends and philosophy Hillary has been promoting without interruption for nearly 30 years.

Note: The opening remarks are impromptu comments in response to the previous speaker.
"I am very glad that Miss Adams made it clear that what I am speaking for today is all of us -- the 400 of us -- and I find myself in a familiar position, that of reacting, something that our generation has been doing for quite a while now. We're not in the positions yet of leadership and power, but we do have that indispensable task of criticizing and constructive protest and I find myself reacting just briefly to some of the things that Senator Brooke said. This has to be brief because I do have a little speech to give. Part of the problem with empathy with professed goals is that empathy doesn't do us anything. We've had lots of empathy; we've had lots of sympathy, but we feel that for too long our leaders have used politics as the art of the possible. And the challenge now is to practice politics as the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible.

What does it mean to hear that 13.3% of the people in this country are below the poverty line? That's a percentage. We're not interested in social reconstruction; it's human reconstruction. How can we talk about percentages and trends? The complexities are not lost in our analyses, but perhaps they're just put into what we consider a more human and eventually a more progressive perspective. The question about possible and impossible was one that we brought with us to Wellesley four years ago. We arrived not yet knowing what was not possible. Consequently, we expected a lot. Our attitudes are easily understood having grown up, having come to consciousness in the first five years of this decade - - years dominated by men with dreams, men in the civil rights movement, the Peace Corps, the space program - - so we arrived at Wellesley and we found, all of us have found, that there was a gap between expectation and realities. But it wasn't a discouraging gap and it didn't turn us into cynical, bitter old women at the age of 18. It just inspired us to do something about that gap.

What we did is often difficult for some people to understand. They ask us quite often, "Why, if you're dissatisfied, do you stay in a place?" Well, if you didn't care a lot about it you wouldn't stay. It's almost as though my mother used to say, "I'll always love you but there are times when I certainly won't like you." Our love for this place, this particular place, Wellesley College, coupled with our freedom from the burden of an inauthentic reality allowed us to question basic assumptions underlying our education. Before the days of the media orchestrated demonstrations, we had our own gathering over in Founder's parking lot. We protested against the rigid academic distribution requirement. We worked for a pass-fail system.

We worked for a say in some of the process of academic decision making. And luckily we were in a place where, when we questioned the meaning of a liberal arts education, there were people with enough imagination to respond to that questioning. So we have made progress. We have achieved some of the things that we initially saw as lacking in that gap between expectation and reality. Our concerns were not, of course, solely academic as all of us know. We worried about inside Wellesley questions of admissions, the kind of people that were coming to Wellesley, the kind of people that should be coming to Wellesley, the process for getting them here. We questioned about what responsibility we should have for both our lives as individuals and for our lives as members of a collective group.

Coupled with our concerns for the Wellesley inside here in the community were our concerns for what happened beyond Hathaway House. We wanted to know what relationship Wellesley was going to have to the outer world. We were lucky that one of the first things Miss Adams did was to set up a cross-registration with MIT because everyone knows that education just can't have any parochial bounds any more. One of the other things that we did was the Upward Bound program. There are so many other things that we could talk about; so many attempts, at least the way we saw it, to pull ourselves into the world outside. And I think that we've succeeded. There will be an Upward Bound program, just for one example, on the campus this summer.

Many of the issues that I've mentioned - - those of sharing power and responsibility, those of assuming power and responsibility have been general concerns on campuses throughout the world. But underlying those concerns there is a theme, a theme which is so trite and so old because the words are so familiar. It talks about integrity and trust and respect. Words have a funny way of trapping our minds on the way to our tongues but there are necessary means even in this multimedia age for attempting to come to grasps with some of the inarticulate maybe even inarticulable things that we're feeling. We are, all of us, exploring a world that none of us understands and attempting to create within that uncertainty. But there are some things we feel, feelings that our prevailing, acquisitive, and competitive corporate life, including tragically the universities, is not the way of life for us. We're searching for more immediate, ecstatic and penetrating modes of living. And so our questions, our questions about our institutions, about our colleges, about our churches, about our government continue. The questions about those institutions are familiar to all of us.

We have seen heralded across the newspapers. Senator Brooke has suggested some of them this morning. But along with using those words - - integrity, trust, and respect - - in regard to institutions and leaders we're perhaps harshest with them in regard to ourselves.

Every protest, every dissent, whether it's an individual academic paper, Founder's parking lot demonstration, in unabashedly an attempt to forge an identity in this particular age. That attempt at forging for many of us over the past four years has meant coming to terms with our humanness. Within the context of a society that we perceive - - now we can talk about reality, and I would like to talk about reality sometime, authentic reality, inauthentic reality, and what we have to accept of what we see -- but our perception of it is that it hovers often between the possibility of disaster and the potentiality for imaginatively responding to men's needs. There's a very strange conservative strain that goes through a lot of New Left, collegiate protests that I find very intriguing because it harkens back to a lot of the old virtues, to the fulfillment of original ideas. And it's also a very unique American experience. It's such a great adventure. If the experiment in human living doesn't work in this country, in this age, it's not going to work anywhere.

But we also know that to be educated, the goal of it must be human liberation. A liberation enabling each of us to fulfill our capacity so as to be free to create within and around ourselves. To be educated to freedom must be evidenced in action, and here again is where we ask ourselves, as we have asked our parents and our teachers, questions about integrity, trust, and respect. Those three words mean different things to all of us. Some of the things they can mean, for instance: Integrity, the courage to be whole, to try to mold an entire person in this particular context, living in relation to one another in the full poetry of existence. If the only tool we have ultimately to use is our lives, so we use it in the way we can by choosing a way to live that will demonstrate the way we feel and the way we know.[What?] Integrity -- a man like Paul Santmire. Trust. This is one word that when I asked the class at our rehearsal what it was they wanted me to say for them, everyone came up to me and said, "Talk about trust, talk about the lack of trust both for us and the way we feel about others. Talk about the trust bust." What can you say about it? What can you say about a feeling that permeates a generation and that perhaps is not even understood by those who are distrusted? All they can do is keep trying again and again and again. There's that wonderful line in East Coker by Eliot about there's only the trying, again and again and again; to win again what we've lost before.

And then respect. There's that mutuality of respect between people where you don't see people as percentage points. Where you don't manipulate people. Where you're not interested in social engineering for people. The struggle for an integrated life existing in an atmosphere of communal trust and respect is one with desperately important political and social consequences. And the word "consequence" of course catapults us into the future. One of the most tragic things that happened yesterday, a beautiful day, was that I was talking to a woman who said that she wouldn't want to be me for anything in the world. She wouldn't want to live today and look ahead to what it is she sees because she is afraid. Fear is always with us but we just don't have time for it. Not now.

There are two people I would like to thank before concluding. That's Ellie Acheson, who is the spearhead for this, and also Nancy Scheibner who wrote this poem which is the last thing I would like to read.

Thank you Uncle Bill. This presentation is awesome. Thanks for the effort in putting this together.

My hubby has a friend at work who has been so busy that he hasn't been able to keep up with dear hillary. When he found out I was on the net he asked hubby if I could find him some articles to read. I have been sending him the articles that I found here the last week or so but I wanted to get some other background info. I have been searching for the articles that I knew were available but wasn't having much luck but thanks to your work I have hit the jackpot. Keep up the good work Unc.

Saul Alinsky: The American radical... An inspiration to anyone contemplating action in their community!

Saul Alinski wrote the book on American radicalism - two books, in fact - a 1945 best-seller, "Reveille for Radicals" and "Rules for Radicals" in 1971. The "Reveille" title page quotes Thomas Paine... "Let them call me rebel and welcome, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of devils, were I to make a whore of my soul."

Saul Alinsky, who was a labor and civil-rights activist from the 1910's until he died in 1972, has written here a guidebook for those who are out to change things. He sets down what the goal is: a society where people are free to live, and also aren't starving in the streets. A society where there is legal and economic justice. Then he sets out to say how to get there.

Alinsky spends a lot of time critiquing the idea that "The end does not justify the means." What end? What means? He feels that there are circumstances where one can and should use means that in other circumstances would be unethical. I am not sure I agree, but Alinsky certainly speaks with the voice of experience.

Alinsky's goal seems to be to encourage positive social change by equipping activists with a realistic view of the world, a kind of preemptive disillusionment. If a person already knows what evil the world is capable of, then perhaps the surprise factor can be eliminated, making the person a more effective activist. Alinsky further seems to be encouraging the budding activist not to worry to much about getting his or her hands dirty. It's all a part of the job, he seems to say.

Alinski, the master political agitator, tactical planner and social organizer didn't mince words:

"Liberals in their meetings utter bold works; they strut, grimace belligerently, and then issue a weasel-worded statement 'which has tremendous implications, if read between the lines.' They sit calmly, dispassionately, studying the issue; judging both sides; they sit and still sit."

"The Radical does not sit frozen by cold objectivity. He sees injustice and strikes at it with hot passion. He is a man of decision and action. There is a saying that the Liberal is one who walks out of the room when the argument turns into a fight."

"Society has good reason to fear the Radical. Every shaking advance of mankind toward equality and justice has come from the Radical. He hits, he hurts, he is dangerous. Conservative interests know that while Liberals are most adept at breaking their own necks with their tongues, Radicals are most adept at breaking the necks of Conservatives."

"Radicals precipitate the social crisis by action - by using power. Liberals may then timidly follow along or else, as in most cases, be swept forward along the course set by Radicals, but all because of forces unloosed by Radical action. They are forced to positive action only in spite of their desires ..."

"The American Radical will fight privilege and power whether it be inherited or acquired by any small group, whether it be political or financial or organized creed. He curses a caste system which he recognizes despite all patriotic denials."

"He will fight conservatives whether they are business or labor leaders."

"He will fight any concentration of power hostile to a broad, popular democracy, whether he finds it in financial circles or in politics."

"The Radical recognizes that constant dissension and conflict is and has been the fire under the boiler of democracy. He firmly believes in that brave saying of a brave people, "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!"

"The Radical may resort to the sword but when he does he is not filled with hatred against those individuals whom he attacks. He hates these individuals not as persons but as symbols representing ideas or interests which he believes to be inimical to the welfare of the people."

"That is the reason why Radicals, although frequently embarking upon revolutions, have rarely resorted to personal terrorism."

Alinski practiced what he preached. He said ...

"Tactics means doing what you can with what you have ... tactics is the art of how to take and how to give."

He uses eyes, ears and nose for examples:

Eyes -
"If you have a vast organization, parade it before the enemy, openly show your power."

Ears -
"If your organization is small, do what Gideon did: conceal the members in the dark but raise a clamor that will make the listener believe that your organization numbers many more that it does."

Nose -
"If your organization is too tiny even for noise, stink up the place."

Alinski devised and proved thirteen tactical rules for use against opponents vastly superior in power and wealth:

"Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.

Never go outside the experience of your people.

Wherever possible go outside of the experience of the enemy.

Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.

Ridicule is man's most potent weapon.

A good tactic is one that your people enjoy.

A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.

Keep the pressure on.

The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.

Major premise for tactics is development of operations that will maintain constant pressure upon the opposition.

If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside.

The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.

Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."

The real action is in the enemy's reaction. The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength. Tactics, like life, require that you move with the action.

Alinski was hated and defamed by powerful enemies, proof that his tactics worked. His simple formula for success ...

"Agitate + Aggravate + Educate + Organize"

Yet also numbered among America's socialists have been the morbid types who long ago marked the Republic down as racist and fascist, its riches nothing more than plunder. As to how deeply in sympathy with the latter type Rodham has been, it is difficult to judge. She has played Masked Politics from the early 1970s. Her masked slipped, however, at the Yale Review of Law and Social Action with its decapitated pigs, and it slipped again with the communist Treuhaft. If she shared these peoples' basic insight into America as a thoroughly corrupt polity, it was not in the least hypocritical for her to take $100,000 from the chicken baron (or from others?). It was merely against the law. Seen through the eyes of her Marxist friends, American ethics are bogus. American wealth is ill-gotten. Why not pocket as much of it as possible, legally or illegally? To a Treuhaft the American legal system is a fraud. A 1960s idealist can always put a bribe of $100,000 into a good cause.

Through the 1970s and into the 1980s, Rodham combined wheeling and dealing with Masked Politics. In 1979 with her husband in the Governor's Mansion she became chairman of the Board of the Legal Services Corporation, a favorite liberal mask, which engaged in so many radical and illegal machinations that the Comptroller General of the United States censured it for contravening its own by-law. By the late 1980s, Rodham was on the board of the New World Foundation, which among other things was funneling money to the Palestine Liberation Organization and giving financial grants to a group supporting El Salvador's communist guerrillas. The foundation also supported the far left Christic Institute, the National Lawyers Guild (founded in the 1930s as an adjunct to the American Communist party), and such other left-wing groups as the Center for Constitutional Studies(co-founded by radical lawyer William Kunstler) and the Institute for Policy Studies (the self-styled "center for radical scholarship").

...At Yale Law School in 1970, Hillary Rodham helped found the Yale Review of Law and Social Action "to present forms of legal scholarship and journalism which focus on programmatic solutions to social problems." She served on the board of editors for the first issue, which ran articles entitled "Rent Strikes and the Law," "Feeding the Poor," and "Lawyers and Revolutionaries." The second issue, on which she worked as an associate editor, devoted fifty pages to the New Haven Superior Court murder trial of a Black Panther, Lonnie McLucas, accused of killing a suspected informer. The trial, in which McLucas was convicted of conspiracy but not murder, was the prelude to the murder conspiracy trial of Bobby Seale and seven other Black Panthers; the trial convulsed New Haven and Yale throughout that spring. Among the illustrations, the editors chose to run the above three drawings of pigs, identified as members of the San Francisco police squad.

(By way of underground, a Black Panther speaker at Yale in April 1970 had discussed the West Coast case with these words:

"The brother is charged with four counts of attempted murder of four pigs. And I don't think that's wrong. Because everybody knows that pigs are depraved traducers that violate the lives of human beings and that there ain't nothing wrong with taking the life of a motherfuc*ing pig."

The statement drew loud boos from many in the audience." [see John Taft, Mayday at Yale (Boulder, CO: Westview Press, 1976) 58-59].

Just came back disgusted from Today Show windows at Rockefeller Center---all I saw were "New York loves Hillary" signs all over the place (plus the usual "Happy Birthday, Mindy" etc.). And of course the interloper on the TV screens (what was that around her neck?), talking about what "we" have done in New York, as if she were elected and already helping us out.

NBC asked her not why she stayed sitting during the standing ovation for O'Connor but why she stood!As if she had been standing the whole time! Giving her a lead-in to talk about "respect" for other people's religious views but how these views shouldn't shape policy.

Yes, good idea to send this to anyone you know who is undecided. Send it to people who you think are voting for her too, unless they're Communists and will only be more convinced that she should be our senator.

The warp on a rug loom goes up and down. The weft goes side to side. It's easy to remember, says James Keshishian: It goes weft to right.

Bad mnemonic puns aside, this man with the mischievous sense of humor knows his rugs.

Mark Keshishian & Sons has been dealing, appraising and restoring Oriental rugs in Chevy Chase since 1931. Mark Keshishian started the business in Istanbul in 1909, brought it here in 1930 and ran it until his death in 1985. (Wife Margaret died in 1983.) His sons James, 68, and Harold, 64, run the business today with James' son Mark, 31.

Some of their rugs have found their way onto some pretty elite floors.

They list as clients the White House, Blair House and the State Department building at 2201 C St. NW.

It's not official. James says his father was approached for service by Franklin D. Roosevelt's housekeeper, and the family has dealt with every president since.

The family prefers not to talk about it, for fear it might be construed as "bragging."

"We have always quietly served with pleasure," James says. "We've gone out of our way, and we'll go anytime. . . . It's an honor and a privilege. And we never, ever gouge."

While they'll admit there are stories aplenty, discretion prevents telling them. However, James will say that now that Hillary Rodham Clinton has banned smoking in the White House, he hasn't had to fix holes "from you reporters grinding out your cigarettes in the rugs."

"On one occasion, we were supplanted by another firm," James says, without disclosing who or when. The competition couldn't come through when an emergency arose, so the Keshishians were called to the rescue, thus supplanting the supplanters.

Administrations come and go, but Democrats and Republicans alike have enlisted the services of the Keshishians. What's the reason?

"Unquestionably dependability," Harold says.

"Our references are good," James says. "Knowledge of the subject. I don't think any store has more knowledge than our family."

Those who want to compare them to other rug dealers don't have to go far. There are a half-dozen dealers on Wisconsin Avenue NW within two blocks of Mark Keshishian & Sons.

"When we moved here, there wasn't anybody here," Mark says. "It was right about the time of the [Iranian] revolution that all these small rug dealers started popping up . . . I think a lot of people were getting out of Iran.

"It was sort of the bazaar mentality: Rug stores next to each other bring more people. It's thinned out quite a bit. I'm surprised the area's supporting as many [rug dealers] as it is."

Their reputation certainly helped the Keshishians survive this invasion. That reputation certainly has something to do with their abilities as salesmen.

"He does like to talk," Mark says of his father with a mischievous grin. "He's a great salesman."

True enough, the engaging, gregarious James could sell rugs to people who live in trees.

"We have a variety of rugs," he says, launching into the sales pitch. "We have collectors' rugs. We have rugs of museum quality. We have rugs from Turkey, Persia or Iran, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania, North Africa, Egypt, Morocco, China. We have sizes that should solve anybody's needs."

Harold is more reluctant to talk. It hasn't always been that way, he says. Part of the reason for his new-found shyness is that he was appointed by President Bush to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee and doesn't want inadvertently to say anything that might jeopardize that prestigious placement.

He repeatedly directs the conversation Mark's way, and James insists that his son get "equal billing." It's clear Mark is being groomed to take the reins.

"Sometimes they step back, and sometimes they intercede," Mark says. "I don't see them stepping back anytime soon." The reason his father and uncle are staying put, he says and they agree, is that they enjoy it too much.

"I just started working part time when I was finishing up school," says Mark, who graduated with a degree in finance from American University in 1985. His inclusion into the family business "kind of just happened. You learn a little every day. I learned most of it through osmosis, just by being around."

There is pressure, he says, to keep up the family tradition and maintain the exclusive clientele.

"I'll just try to keep it the way it's been going," he says. "Some people say, 'You should go out and do special sales in malls.' I think that's more for the fly-by-night guys. Maybe I'm more conservative than the other guys."

The building at 4505 Stanford St. in Chevy Chase is unassuming, like any other Oriental rug store. Piles of the things, arranged according to size, cover the floor, while others stand rolled and tied against the wall.

"We have rugs that are 150 years old and usable, to brand-new," James says. The price range is $50 per square foot and up for Persian (Iranian) rugs and $50 and down for others.

One reason for the price difference, he says, is an executive order from Ronald Reagan prohibiting the importing of Iranian oil, pistachios and rugs. So there are no new ones on the legitimate market. That hasn't stopped smugglers from trying to bring in illegal rugs. James and Harold have been asked to inspect rug shipments for contraband.

"There are glaring stories about those who make end runs around the government," James says.

The repair shop is located on the second floor, where five full-time restorers work.

"We do a lot of restoration," Harold says, estimating they do "thousands" of jobs a year. There are dozens of rugs piled up waiting for repair.

He rolls open a recently repaired rug. It looks pretty good for being 200 years old. Then there's a tapestry that "for some reason" was cut into two pieces, waiting to be made whole again. It's about 350 years old, he says.

On the office walls and in scrap books are photos and correspondence from presidents and other dignitaries. Bookshelves hold copies of magazine articles about the Keshishians, some written by them. Both James and Harold have published articles and give lectures on the rug business.

"We're all internationally known appraisers and connoisseurs," James says. "We have people come to us from the four corners of the globe."

He calls hello to a customer browsing at the far end of the shop. "She'd been looking for a rug for three weeks," he says. "We found it for her in two days."

Their business also benefits, they say, from being located in a cosmopolitan city like Washington.

"People become informed and sophisticated in collecting rugs," James says. "They've visited places where rugs are made. And we're fortunate to have the Textile Museum in Washington."

The Keshishians can look at a rug, any Oriental rug, and tell you where it was made - including the village. It seems astonishing to an untrained observer, especially when they explain that designs and techniques are traded and copied.

"Designs would get passed up and down the Silk Road, which was like the Route 66 of the ancient world," James says. "Designs from one area would show up in another because enterprising traders would seek new sources. Copy, copy, copy. Everybody copies each other."

But they play down their ability to determine rug origins.

"I could teach you," Harold says. "In four months I could make you dangerous," he jokes.

Their knowledge is based on decades of experience and good old book learning. All three are college-educated, so they can tell you how the water pH of a rug-making village will affect the quality of the finished product and other minute details of rug making.

"Herodotus and Marco Polo remarked about a certain dye called kermes," James says, by way of example. "This is a dye extracted from the skeletal remains of a beetle found at the base of Mount Ararat. They grind it up, and it makes a powerful red dye."

Founder Mark Keshishian was Armenian, born in the Turkish town of Hadjin in 1894, in an area known as Armenia Minor. His sons are active in the Armenian-American community.

"One characteristic of Armenians is that they are very loyal to the country that adopts them," says James, referring to the emigrations that took place during Armenia's domination by the Ottoman Empire and the Soviet Union. "They never had a place to go back to. . . . For the first time in recent history, we have a home."

Accordingly, James was born in Belgium, Harold in London and their brother John on the Greek island of Corfu.

They are American patriots to the bone. James says he had two operations at age 17 so that he could serve in the U.S. Army. Harold served in the U.S. Navy. John, 70, also served in the Navy and is a former president of the medical and dental staff at Washington Hospital Center.

"I will never, ever buy anything but an American car," James says. He and his wife, Elsa, have been married 32 years and have three children, including Mark.

"Ain't she a good-looking woman?" James asks rhetorically. "I don't know how I landed her, but she's not going to get off the hook, I can tell you that."

Harold and his wife, Melissa Megee, have four children. Mark is single.

They have a hobby that helps them hold on to their Armenian heritage: collecting Oriental rugs (there's a surprise) with Armenian inscriptions on them.

"We collect rugs that come from traditional areas that the Azeris claim as theirs," James says, referring to the ongoing war between Armenia and Azerbaijan for the predominantly Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

"I have a rug which has the floor plan of an Armenian cathedral built in 670. We were there first. We feel like the American Indians from time to time."

That's not to say the Keshishians dwell on the past.

"We're like mailmen," James says. "We're always leaning foward, trying to get there. With a smile.

"Hey, I like that! I just made that up."

Officials 'Run Amok'

The following is the concluding section of an opinion issued
yesterday by Federal District Judge Royce Lamberth in Association
of American Physicians and Surgeons, Inc, et al. v. Hillary
Rodham Clinton, et al. The case concerned whether federal open
meeting laws applied to the First Lady's Health Care task force,
and a declaration by "Health Czar" Ira Magaziner that it was
exempt because only federal employees were members of the task
force. Judge Lamberth referred Mr. Magaziner for a perjury
investigation; U.S. Attorney Eric Holder criticized the
government but declined to prosecute. Mr. Holder is now Deputy
Attorney General. We note that there is growing concern about the
standing of the Justice Department in light of Attorney General
Janet Reno's decision not to seek an independent counsel in the
campaign finance investigation. But aside from that, the Judge's
remarks need little amplification by us:

It is clear that the decisions here were made at the highest
levels of government, and that the government itself is--and
should be--accountable when its officials run amok. There were no
rogue lawyers here misleading this court. The court agrees with
plaintiffs that these were not reckless and inept errors taken by
bewildered counsel. The Executive Branch of the government,
working in tandem, was dishonest with this court. . . .
The Department of Justice has a long tradition of setting the
highest standards of conduct for all lawyers, and it is a sad day
when this court must conclude, as did the United States Attorney
in his investigation, that the Department of Justice succumbed to
pressure from White House attorneys and others to provide this
court with "strained interpretations" that were "ultimately
unconvincing."

This court goes further than the United States Attorney, however,
because this court cannot agree that the Department of Justice
never relied on the "all employee" exemption for the working
group. Having been presented the "all-employee" facts in the
Magaziner declaration, the Court of Appeals specifically found
that the defendants had made that argument. Neither the briefs on
appeal, nor any transcript of the oral argument on appeal, was
before this court. Yet the Department of Justice sat back and
never told this court that it was not making, and had not made,
such an argument, and never corrected any of the factual
inaccuracies in the Magaziner declaration. The United States
Attorney reported that this was a conscious decision because
attorneys in the White House refused to allow any supplemental
information to be provided to the court. It seems that some
government officials never learn that the coverup can be worse
than the underlying conduct.
Most shocking to this court, and deeply disappointing, is that
the Department of Justice would participate in such conduct. This
was not an issue of good faith word games being played with the
Court. The United States Attorney found that the most
controversial sentence of the Magaziner declaration--"Only
federal government employees serve as members of the
interdepartmental working group"--could not be prosecuted under
the perjury statute because the issue of "membership" within the
working group was a fuzzy one, and no generally agreed upon
"membership" criteria were ever written down. Therefore, the
Magaziner declaration was actually false because of the
implication of the declaration that "membership" was a meaningful
concept and that one could determine who was and was not a
"member" of the working group. This whole dishonest explanation
was provided to this court in the Magaziner declaration on March
3, 1993, and this court holds that such dishonesty is
sanctionable and was not good faith dealing with the court or
plaintiff's counsel. It was not timely corrected or supplemented,
and this type of conduct is reprehensible, and the government
must be held accountable for it.

The court adheres to its view, expressed at the August 11, 1995,
hearing, that "it is remarkable that any United States Attorney
would make comments to a court that are so sharply critical,
frankly, of the government conduct of this litigation . . . ."
The court adds that it is beyond remarkable, it is commendable,
and it demonstrates adherence to the traditional role of the
Department of Justice that justice be done rather than that a
case be won at any cost. The elevation of United States Attorney
Holder to be Deputy Attorney General is an encouraging and
hopeful sign that this case was a rare aberration--never to be
repeated in this court.

On April 7, the Center for the Study of Popular Culture and the American Enterprise Institute co-sponsored, “The Legacy and Future of Hillary Rodham Clinton.” We present the transcripts of that conference in this multi-part series: “Who is Hillary?”

WHAT IS IT ABOUT HILLARY that makes her different from every other First Lady in history? It isn’t her marriage. There have been a lot of political wives who’ve had less than ideal marriages, including some in the White House. Jacqueline Kennedy, for instance, had a lot to put up with. The difference, of course, is that her problem never became our problem, whereas with the Clintons all of their problems become our problems eventually.

But there are differences that set Hillary apart. Most fundamentally, she’s the first presidential spouse to see her years in the White House not as a privilege, not as an awesome responsibility to live up to, but rather as a platform, a career move, a chance to add to her résumé, to build her career for the future.

Hillary is distinguished by her hyperactivity. She’s excessive in everything she does. You have to give her credit for being a hard worker. But I think if she just did a third as much, she would have higher approval ratings, and wouldn’t have to be thinking about raising $25 million to run for the Senate.

When you look at Mrs. Clinton’s résumé you find very strange things. Her friends start telling you, well, she wasn’t really responsible for that. She was just on the board for this other thing. And the résumé falls apart in your hands.

And many of the things she gets involved in end up being very controlling and controversial and troubling. For example, in 1991 and ’92, Hillary was very involved in education reform. In March 1992, she and Ira Magaziner wrote an article in the journal Educational Leadership arguing that the American economy couldn’t keep up with Japan and Germany. They then presented nothing less than a plan to reorganize not only the whole American educational system but the entire U.S. economy.

We’re going to get rid of the high school diploma, they said, and reorient everything toward vocational education, aiming at a certificate of competency by age 16. Skilled workers, as they go through life, will have to keep earning additional certificates, which will be administered by unelected state boards and regulatory agencies. Your name and certifications will go into a national labor data bank, in which all employers will be required by law to list all their available jobs, which will then be matched up to people.

Another corps of bureaucrats will go into workplaces and tell executives how to reorganize their factories and offices in order to use the skills that the certificate programs are producing. The employers will pay for this with a tax of 1 percent on their payroll. Quite a sweeping plan, all in the name of increasing productivity in the United States of America.

When pilot projects launched along these lines by Mario Cuomo and others failed miserably, suddenly this wasn’t Hillary’s idea. She was just recapitulating the ideas of others. Yet even after the New York pilot failures, Hillary’s allies came up with an even more grandiose plan, with Hillary continuing to be listed on their literature as a co-chair for implementation. This is just one line among many on her résumé that the general public never hears about.

For Hillary, a massive manipulation of U.S. schools and workplaces was just another project. As with the failure of her convoluted health care plan, when her moment as policy czar passed, she just put that in the background.

But the question is: Does she really still believe these sorts of centralized, grossly controlling schemes would be a good idea? I think she does. All she has learned-and this is what she means when she says that she’s a New Democrat and a moderate-is that you can’t push these big plans through all at once. So now she’s running in New York as a mild and even-tempered candidate.

I don’t see the many social engineering plans in Hillary’s background as left-wing so much as I see them as a kind of corporate fascism. They would give the government, in league with favored large industries, the power to decide who does what and how and why.

Of course the irony is that when it came time to act, Hillary’s own health care task force couldn’t even organize chairs for people to sit on at meetings, or manage their own travel vouchers or their budget, or avoid breaking federal regulations and laws. Their theory of “managed competition” was ginned up by a staff of people who didn’t even believe in competition, or understand how it could possibly lower prices. So that was a fizzle.

Then in 1994, barely months after these heady attempts to remake great swathes of American society, Hillary Clinton was under legal scrutiny for various financial and ethical scandals. And suddenly she turned into the Pretty in Pink lady, who couldn’t understand commodities trading, or how a real-estate option worked.

After she got over that hump, her office announced at the beginning of the second Clinton administration that Hillary’s number-one project was going to be community development banks. They created an agency over at the Treasury Department, and there was a lot of pressure from the White House to give out grants, though it turned out no proper evaluation procedure had ever been set up. So the lion’s share of the money simply went to institutions with which Hillary had long associations.

When Congress asked questions about this, the fellow in charge went back and wrote the evaluations up, and backdated them. He was caught and had to resign. Though Mrs. Clinton’s office had claimed this was her number-one project, when it collapsed, Hillary suddenly had nothing to do with the initiative at all.

These same sorts of dodges and transformations have followed each of her political failures, and I expect we’re going to keep seeing the pattern so long as Mrs. Clinton remains active in political life.

Robert Treuhaft, Lawyer Who Inspired Funeral Exposé, Dies at 89

Robert Treuhaft, a crusading radical lawyer who inspired his wife, Jessica Mitford, to write her best seller "The American Way of Death," died in New York on Nov. 11. He was 89.

As a union lawyer representing longshoremen in the San Francisco area in the 1950's, Mr. Treuhaft was enraged by the exorbitant fees undertakers charged, frequently consuming a widow's death benefits.

After organizing the Bay Area Funeral Society to reduce the cost of funerals for union members, Mr. Treuhaft encouraged his wife to write an exposé of the funeral industry, taking a year off from his Oakland law practice to help with research.

The result was "The American Way of Death," first published in 1963. Miss Mitford, who was known as Decca and who died in 1996, dedicated the work to her husband with gratitude for "his untiring collaboration."

In a 1993 interview, Miss Mitford said that initially she had not been interested in the subject. "Then Bob started bringing home the trade publications like Casket and Sunnyside, Mortuary Management — all those wonderful names — so I began to study them," she said.

When the British novelist Evelyn Waugh remarked that the book seemed to have been written by two people, Jessica Mitford's sister Nancy wrote back saying: "Clever of you to see the two voices. I am quite certain much of it was written by Treuhaft who is a sharp little lawyer, and who certainly made her write it in the first place."

In 1976 Gov. Jerry Brown of California appointed Mr. Treuhaft to the state Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.

Robert Edward Treuhaft was born in New York on Aug. 8, 1912, the son of working-class immigrants from Hungary. His mother eventually came to run her own hat shop on Park Avenue; his father, a waiter turned bootlegger, became part owner of a Wall Street restaurant.

Raised in the Bronx and then Brooklyn, Mr. Treuhaft won a scholarship to Harvard, where he studied law.

After working for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in New York, Mr. Treuhaft was rejected by the Army on medical grounds at the start of World War II and went to work for the Office of Price Administration in Washington; there he met and fell in love with Miss Mitford.

The couple could scarcely have been more different in upbringing. She was one of the blue-blooded Mitford sisters, a daughter of Lord Redesdale and sister to Nancy, the novelist; to Diana, who married Sir Oswald Mosley, the British fascist leader; to Unity, one of Hitler's cronies; and to Deborah, who became Duchess of Devonshire.

Miss Mitford was recovering from the loss of her first husband, Esmond Romilly, Winston Churchill's nephew, who had been killed on a Canadian Air Force raid over Germany and with whom she had eloped to fight with the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War.

Mr. Treuhaft and Miss Mitford were married in 1943; Miss Mitford accepted his proposal before he had finished making it. They moved to San Francisco, where Mr. Treuhaft started a radical law firm that specialized in fighting every kind of discrimination and social injustice.

Both joined the United States Communist Party and were frequently investigated and harassed by government officials; for many years they were denied passports, for example. But by 1958 they had grown disillusioned with Communism and left the party.

In 1964 Mr. Treuhaft was one of four foreign lawyers expelled from Portugal by the fascist government of Premier Antonio de Oliveira Salazar after they had tried to investigate penal conditions in the country.

In 1971 he accepted a young Yale lawyer named Hillary Rodham (now Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton) as an intern.

After his wife's death, Mr. Treuhaft completed her last book, "The American Way of Death Revisited." He was working on a collection of her letters at the time of his death.

Mr. Treuhaft is survived by a stepdaughter, Constancia Romilly, and his son, Benjamin, a New York piano tuner who runs the Send a Piano to Havana Project, shipping old pianos to Cuba.
