Let me get this straight - The Citadel cannot operate as a male-only establishment because it is discriminitory but NY can have a school that refuses heterosexuals and that is considered progressive?

We cannot have vouchers because it will siphon precious resources away from the regular public schools yet they can siphon away those same funds to benefit a special group that makes up a couple of percent of the population. So the parents who can't afford to get their kids out of the rotten public school system should be pleased that being gay now trumps being African-American when it comes to doling out the public funds.

No one should get any special treatment but since the Democrat party's platform is almost entirely based on special treatment the resulting infighting might be fun to watch.

Doesn't New York already have the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts and the Performing Arts?

(Would love to see the football game between them and Harvey Milk High.)

What a complete waste of money. NYC is supposedly in a fiscal crisis, the public schools are in meltdown and this is how the powers that be choose to spend tax payer money. Un-freaking-believable. Sickening.

"This school will be a model for the country and possibly the world,"

The things politicians do for votes continues to amaze and shock my sensibilities.

On the positive side, having all these gay etc activist kids in one shcool, it will lessen the pressure for the rest of the district student population to worship at the sexual "diversity" alter.

I know a few homosexual/bisexual people, and I've managed to track down two of them (I'm seeking others as well) for their take on the matter.
One (bisexual) thinks that it's a bad idea all around, finding it worse than the idea of segregating schools by race and finding the whole concept sexist. He said that he "furrowed his brow in disgust at the notion".

Another (homosexual) thinks that it might be a good idea for the few teenagers who genuinely need a safehouse, but apart from that it's either neutral or negative, leaning toward negative because segregation of this nature is generally a bad thing. He has even stronger reservations against it being taxpayer-funded, too. He wouldn't mind a safehouse arrangement, but he does not care for the idea of a segregated school.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was enthusiastic about the new school."Everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools and this lets them get an education without having to worry," Bloomberg told reporters at his daily briefing today.

In New York City, the demand has created a three-year waiting list at the Harvey Milk School, said spokesman Carl Strange. Like the Dallas school, now in its fifth year, a private Dallas High School opens for LGBT teens only. The Harvey Milk School has received queries from educators nationwide and outside the United States who are interested in starting similar programs. - 09/2001 article http://www.glsen.org/templates/news/record.html?section=12&record=991 \ Harvey Milk is not new news, the reconstruction slant is with specifics on financing not given.

Is Mayor Bloomberg gay? This type of thing does seem to be a "pet" project for him and he appeared absolutely thrilled to march in their recent parade. Maybe he feels their pain?
