Life after the campaign for Jerry Kilgore
The Virginian-Pilot ^ | April 30, 2006 | Warren Fiske

RICHMOND - The intoxicating rush from campaigning returned to Jerry Kilgore's veins at a shopping mall, two weeks after he lost the gubernatorial election.

The weekend excursion for Kilgore and his family was interrupted by dozens of people who kept stopping the recovering candidate to compliment his campaign and assure Kilgore they had voted for him.

The criticism still stings. "My gosh, I thought I was the leader of the anti-tax movement," Kilgore said. "It's exactly how I would have governed. The referendums came from the populist in me. I think people ought to be involved in the process."

Maybe we didn't get the memo.

I fought long and hard for Jerry Kilgore, because I believed in him. But he did NOT campaign and an anti-tax guy. He campaigned as an anti-Kaine guy.

If he had come out of the gate saying we need to return the surplus to the people, and STAYED ON MESSAGE, he would have won in a landslide.

A party insider told me the campaign blamed the "phone banks."

They learned nothing.

I completely agree.
I think Kaine even said that when they started down the anti-tax road, it threw Kaine off-stride.

The stupid party strikes again.

Kilgore ran a stupid campaign. Those Hilter death penalty ads made Kilgore look immature.

Agreed. Unfortunately, that's apparently a lesson not yet learned.

I have a personalized license plate (can you guess what it is?) yet the other night when I told someone that I had something for him and it was on the front seat of my car and to just get it as he was leaving, the plate wasn't how he described my car - he commented on the Kilgore bumper sticker. go figger.

LOL!!!

As a matter of fact, yes it does have the Tobacco Heritage logo on it :) That wasn't the part I was referring to - I was referring to where "SAMPLE" is located.

Bless his heart, my poor husband went absolutely nuts down at DMV trying to get me personalized plates. Every version of Smoker was already taken. so he finally gave up and told the gal what to put on it and she couldn't figure it out and questioned him if he was sure, and would his wife understand why he chose those letters....his reaction was, "She better, it's what I've been calling her for more than 15 years."

And, no it is not witch spelled with a "b"

Ironically, I just got an email from Kilgore urging me to support George Allen.

LOL!!!!

I'm hoping that George Allen does the right thing and shows up on Chincoteague tomorrow for the Seafood Festival.

Folks here on the Shore are starting to get mighty ticked about being ignored. It's been amazing to me the comments I've started hearing from non-politically active people. They are fed up with what is going on and not only in Richmond, but with all elected people.

My twentysomethingyearold neighbors, who are not politically active in the least - or at least weren't in the past, are screaming to me about how the Shore is so totally ignored.........and these are all native Virginians

I don't know his schedule, but if he does, I'll be jealous.

I haven't been to the Seafood Festival since 1985...

This is going to be my first time going.

My daughter (and husband) won a ticket as a door prize at the New Church VFD Easter Egg hunt, so we bought another ticket.......I'm really looking forward to it.

I got a phone call last Tuesday (week ago today) asking me if I could start the job I applied for on Wednesday (the next day) and work Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. I said sure, but I couldn't work this Wednesday night because of the Seafood Fest. No problem.

What's really funny is that I never applied for the job, just made an offhand comment I would be interested in it. LOL!!! I still can't believe they took me seriously.

Did he say why?

The word I got was that "the Democrats out organized us" which is true.

But it's not the reason he lost.

I agree. Hopefully the RPV will let the grassroots select the candidate next time instead of the party bigwigs. Bill Bolling and Bob McDonnell should have the opportunity, if they so choose, to run in a primary. The RPV selected Jerry Kilgore very early on. Kilgore was an excellent AG but not necessarily the right candidate for governor. I also agree with those who said his loss was due to the lack of a resonant message and poor advertising choices.

Gee, thanks, Jerry.

Sincerely,

I'd have to disagree there. I announced the "Kilgore for Governor 2005" campaign on FR the day after Horseface was elected.

Kilgore would have been an excellent Governor. But he ~turned into~ a lousy candidate.

I agree Jerry was the heir apparent. We were told up our way after 'horse-face' was elected that there'd be no primary in 2005 and that the party had closed ranks around Jerry. I agree he'd have been a great governor. As a candidate, he just didn't have broad enough appeal, unfortunately. And we certainly agree on the inability of his campaign to connect with voters. It appears to be what happened with Mark Earley's campaign. I sure hope we shake things up for next time. In the meantime -- George Allen 2006!
