First Lady Michelle Obama was criticized last week for vacationing in Spain with her daughter while the economy continues to sputter, but Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine said this morning it's "wrong" to attack the First Family's private vacation.
"I think it's wrong to talk about the first lady's family vacation as a politician," Kaine said on NBC's "Today Show." "She's a mom."
Michelle Obama traveled with her daughter Sasha and a group of friends to Costa del Sol in southern Spain.
"When you're in office you don't give up being a mom and a family member, too," Kaine said. "This was an opportunity for Michelle to join friends and friends' daughters [and] give them exposure to a part of the world that they haven't been before."
He said President and Michelle Obama are "focused on being good parents."

Frankly, the spin is making me dizzy, between Beltway Bob’s “private citizen” comment to former Governor Kaine telling us to mind our own business—well, Governor—she’s using MY money for travel. I’m pretty sure that MAKES IT MY BUSINESS!!!
Before I retired, I think I took a total of 2 family vacations in 25 years. Neither of them were in the costa Del Sol. If she had to have a vacation, why didn’t she take it in Pensacola FL?
What a boatload of crap. This wasn’t a trip to 6 Flags or Disney World for the kid - this was Spain for an 8 year old - at a prohibitively expensive hotel.

Unlike many career pols, “private citizen” Michelle surely doesn’t have the discipline to keep her emotions in check.

She is living high on the hog on my dime, and, I resent it. If she wants to vacation let her pay for it out of her pocket. No one is saying anything about her being a mom, they are talking about her high living when other moms in this country do not know how they are going to feed their children. Let’s say she is a private citizen spending her own money (which she isn’t), she should show her patriotism, as first lady of this country, and spend her vacation at an American resort. I guess Hawaii is too cheap for her tastes.

Michelle Obama is nothing special and she needs to know the public did not appreciate her spending money that could be used for many NEEDY purposes and not a five day million dollar get away!!!!!

iirc, there were some 20 vehicles involved, probably more than one plane.
I had not heard the total number of vehicles, but I knew protocol indicated that there would be vehicles, at least for her and the kid. Wow.
First it was to spend time with a Chicago friend whose mother/father just died. Now it’s just a Mom on a trip to spend time with her daughter. Both of which could easily be accomplished without traveling to Spain.
These two sorry excuses are sad in their desperation to explain an unnecessary and obscenely expensive junket, with rumors of meeting secretly with Arab dignitaries.
Next on the agenda, a Florida gulf weekend and then another 10 day vacation in New England. This after at least 6 other vacation since January according to those keeping count.
People like me who haven’t taken a real vacation in years are not liking the vacation Queen’s in your face frivolity at our expense.
