Could a Palin presidential bid rewrite the campaign rulebook?
CBS News' Political Hotsheet ^ | August 23, 2011 | Lucy Madison

Conventional wisdom dictates that Sarah Palin is not running for president: it's too late; the field is too crowded, and many think she is more interested in making money than running for office.

On top of that, the onetime vice presidential candidate has failed to build substantial campaign apparatus in crucial early primary states. She has seemingly declined to aggressively court big-name, big-dollar Republican donors, and she has watched as countless top GOP operatives join her possible competitors' campaigns.

Palin, many believe, has handicapped her own prospects for 2012 and decided to sit it out.

--snip--

"Her campaign, if it is a campaign, just truly baffles me," says Republican strategist Eric Woolson, who managed former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee's Iowa campaign in 2008 and worked on former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty's 2012 bid until his recent withdrawal from the race. "She's not doing interviews; she really doesn't have the infrastructure around her that she would have typically set up by this point of the game... All of us would say, gosh, she should have had that infrastructure in place two years ago."(continued)

Not doing interviews?

What does he think happened at the Fair in Iowa. Talk about being out of touch.

I hope so.

I have a large coffee, with plenty of loot in it, set aside for her.

Sarah Palin is all about common sense, which puts her far-far ahead of establishment politicians.

When she does announce it will require all of our attention to contributions, door knocking and phones to make it happen! People will HAVE to “give ‘til it hurts”!

They’re scared of her because with a real conservative at the top of the ticket, especially one that the Tea Party people will walk over glass to vote for, there could be an electoral sweep the likes of which they haven’t seen before.

They know people will not vote for Obama again, and like 1980, they’ll vote for whoever is opposing him. So they’re attempting (as always) to get the most democratic republican to win the nomination.

If Palin runs and starts winning caucuses and primaries, and then the nomination and starts building a groudswell despite everything they’ve thrown at her, they are done.

And by they, I mean the establishment of both parties and the media.

Here is what I see too. How does she mount a serious campaign without the basics? There are certain things that are unavoidable in a nationwide run. Money and organization are the main ones.

Reagan rolled in late in '80, which is what everyone points to for Palin, but he had built up a solid machine during the '68 and '76 run. He had men in his staff that were old pros at big campaigns. He had the big money people ready to write checks. Palin has none of this.

Her very first speech (accepting the VP place on the republican ticket) energized the public to have hope, seeing a real person, unafraid, not corrupted, not beholden to Washington for anything or anyone, a rare opportunity indeed, for the America voter to have a sincere, common sense person to vote for in a major election. Sarah is the real thing.

It is my belief Sarah will run this election and I pray Sarah will win. The candidate running with Sarah is important. Perhaps Rick Perry for VP, or Mitt Romney. Stranger things than this could happen!

It is never too late to run a "phony campaign" (no expensive campaign manager, no expensive staff, no expensive advertising, no infrastructure) if your only goal is to hype your celebrity status to enhance future book sales, speaking fees and generate future Reality TV contracts.

Donald Trump engaged in such a "phony undeclared campaign" a couple of months ago and Newt Gingrich is running such a "phony declared campaign" right now.

September 3 is being hyped as the latest "Sarah Declaration Day". Since a declaration will mean a loss of the lucrative FOX News contract. my gut feeling is that Palin will remain in Donald Trump "phony undeclared campaign" mode rather than switch over to the Newt Gingrich "phony declared campaign" mode.

The question is how long The Big Tease Game can be sustained until even her more loyal followers realize that they are being toyed with.

"Palin would undoubtedly be paving new ground in the realm of fundraising - and she would have to all but forgo the support of the Republican establishment."

Yeah, well that might be the case at FIRST, but if they want donations to the PARTY, the party probably shouldn't be seen as dissing Sarah in any way. Already conservatives are loathe to send money to the GOP, and any perceived slight of the conservative candidates will dry that up even more. Besides, I think she would generate the kind of excitement that results in millions from the 'grass roots'.
