Romney has clear lead among Republicans: poll

Mitt Romney has a growing lead in the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and almost half of the party's voters expect him to be the nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Twenty-eight percent of Republicans backed the former Massachusetts governor, giving him a lead of 8 percentage points over his nearest challenger Herman Cain in the poll, taken November 10-11.

Romney was 5 percentage points ahead in a survey November 7-8.

Newt Gingrich, the U.S. House of Representatives speaker in the mid-1990s, solidified a recent rise among conservatives seeking an alternative to the more moderate Romney, coming in third place in the current poll with 16 percent.

Gingrich, who is seen as having performed well in recent debates, was viewed as the second-most "presidential" of the Republican hopefuls, according to the poll.

Whether or not they support him, almost half of the Republicans surveyed expect Romney to become the nominee to oppose President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election.

Romney, who also ran for president in 2008, has been in first or second place in polls for months and enjoys by far the most campaign funds of the Republican field.

But some in his party see him as too liberal, and he has so far failed to significantly boost his level of support in polls. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, however, shows he is benefiting from missteps by his rivals.

"As the other candidates falter, his image comes into relief," Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said....

I saw this too. It makes me marinate on two things...

1) Obama ads are attacking Romney. I haven’t seen a negative ad about any other candidate except him. Why do you think that is?

2) Obama seems to ignore Cain despite polls providing evidence that he should not. Why?

Is Cain just a niche candidate? Loved here, but essentially unknown to the average voter?

As much as I like Cain, I’m starting to think he’s nothing more than a novelty. Pity.

Yep, he's raised 9 million dollars in a very short time because he's a virtual unknown nation wide......think about it

You get Romney, there’s a good chance you’ll get a Huntsman a as a VP.

If Romney got it, who do you think he would pick as a running mate? I have three in mind— Jeb Bush, Michele Bachmann or Herman Cain.

Bachmann or Cain.. Most likely Bachmann.. Just look to the last election. The Rino thinks a conservative VP will help him win.

This time around I won’t be voting because of the VP.. I see very little difference between Romney and Zero.. I’ll work to get control of the senate turned over to conservatives and send more conservatives to the house.

I will NOT vote for Romney. (flame away!)

They don’t like each other.

Not a chance. They don’t like each other, and Mitt isn’t going to pick another Mormon on the ticket, no way, no how. He needs a VP who will bring him help in the south.

It’s so bizarre to me how the conservative candidates have all given Romney a pass and instead destroyed each other. If I were conspiratorially-minded...

But seriously, why have the con candidates ignored Romney and savaged one another? So self-destructive. I’m already mentally prepared to hold my nose and campaign for him in the general. But in a country of 300 million people, this was the best we could do?

If Romney is selected by the MSM/Powers-that-be, I don't give a crap who he selects for VP; I won't vote for him. I played that gave with McCain. The RINO infested GOP can pound sand.

Because as "black" is to criticism of Obama, so "Mormon" is to criticism of Romney.

Romney = Low Republican Turnout = Obama Second Term.

Romney = McCain 2.0 = Dole 3.0 (the RINO machine / Media candidate)

Even Sarah Palin could not save McCain.

A RINO Pres with a Conservative VP is a no-win.

Why? Because conservatives have been treated like #$*&!& by the RINOs in the last 30 years.

How? Read my Lips. (among many)

Because it’s a conspiracy, man. The Democrats have infiltrated the campaigns of our most conservative candidates and convinced them to go after each other. Ya know, they’re picking our GOP candidate for us. They’re convincing Rick Perry to sound like an idget in our debates to kill him and he’s buying into it. They’ve convinced all of these anonymous women to come out and play-pretend that they had inappropriate contact with Cain. Any they’ve convinced Cain to play along clumsily.

It’s all the Dems, man, they are even contriving to hide Romney amidst the fog of it all so that he can get the nomination in spite of all of these super, bright, well-spoken, and truly deserving “conservative” candidates who clearly own the next election.

Yeah, man, if it wasn’t for the Democrats evilly controlling our own nomination process and manipulating each and every public opinion poll that comes out then we’d be getting ready to re-nominate Thomas Jefferson, ya see.

Yeah, just sit in your padded room and mumble about a Democrat conspiracy over and over. That should make you feel better....

You obviously haven't been reading the comments on FR - it looks like most of FR supports Romney - they've trashed all the other candidates for one tort or another and get so busy doing it they never bother to trash Romney. They just speak out the side of their mouths that they don't want him, while doing everything they can to ensure he's it.

Have you been in a coma since you signed on in 2002?
