What the Case for Palin in 2016 Says About Conservatives
The Nation ^ | November 19, 2012 | Ben Adler

In the Republican crack up following their loss on November 6, conservative pundits have tossed out innumerable arguments about how to win next time. It was inevitable that someone would come up with the worst possible idea. And, sure enough, someone has. Writing in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, conservative pundit Charlotte Allen declares, “I’ve got a suggestion for cutting short the GOP angst: Sarah Palin for president in 2016.”

Reading Allen’s piece is interesting because of what it shows about the mindset of some conservatives: that pundits who think as Allen does have no respect for policy, no seriousness about governance and no respect for the American voter.

Allen hails from one of the more intellectually serious and respectable corners of the conservative media. Her author bio on Townhall.com, a conservative magazine website for which she has written, reads: “Charlotte Allen is a contributing editor for the Manhattan Institute’s Minding the Campus website. She writes regularly for the Weekly Standard and is a frequent contributor of opinion pieces to the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post.” The Manhattan Institute is a think tank that served as the idea factory for Rudy Giuliani’s mayoralty. Allen contributes to its academia-focused blog. The Weekly Standard is one of the most influential magazines among the DC Republican elite. (Vice President Dick Cheney would send someone to personally fetch thirty copies of it upon publication every week.) It features some of the best writers in conservative journalism, such as Andrew Ferguson, Christopher Caldwell and Matt Labash. So it is not as if analyzing Allen’s is the same as, say, unfairly picking on some random person with his own blog...

Doesn’t matter. The leftist are going to win every election as long as the corruption exists.

Conservatives did not have a candidate in the election. The moderate to the left candidate run by the Republican Party lost . To a FAILED President!

Moderate Republicans will not vote for Palin. She is too much of a loose cannon. Personally I find her sexy but my wife feels she is a dip. Only having half of the party vote for her will not beat a Dem - even if its Biden (yikes). I see a Chris Christie or Rubio vs Clinton

GOP had better get serious about solving the corruption issue at the voting booth or all of this is wasted energy.

I haven’t heard anyone at GOP Central acknowledge that there is a problem. So I’d say we’ve got a tough row to hoe.

Even with Christie the Democrats will probably win the Islamic vote, same for the Hispanics and Rubio.

As for Palin: On the down-side she has a tendency to speak in cliches that can be off-putting. On the up-side, her understanding of conservative principle - which is to say, the freedom principle - is heart-felt and instinctive. She is fearless. She walks to her own drum.

Put her up against the 90% of the weasels in the GOP and she is an easy and obvious choice.

Don’t like her? Find me someone better.

Like a movie critic who always loves what you hate and hates what you love, they can be worthwhile as long as they are consistent. When it comes to Sarah Palin, the left is very consistent.

Romney successfully overcame the far left media's caricature that he was a right wing extremist. What he could not overcome was the accurate perception by conservatives that Romney is a liberal, the creator of RomneyCare, a man so far to the left that he would use the phrase "severely conservative" to describe himself when trying to appeal to real conservatives. Independents were willing to consider Romney, once they knew him. What we didn't have were enough conservatives to overcome the margin of fraud in key states.

Similarly, Palin speaks well enough to overcame the far left media's caricature that she is a right wing extremist. Independents will be willing to consider Palin, once they know her. If she declares early, she will have my full time support. If she is not in the race early, I will not sit on the sidelines while Chris Christie, another Bush, and the usual suspects line up for GOP insider support. It is time to unite behind a single conservative who can knock the next Dole/McCain/Romney out of the race, and waiting to see if Sarah would go for it put us behind on that contest a year ago.

You're saying moderates won't vote for Palin. Yet you somehow think Conservatives will vote for Christie?

Palin has natural leadership qualities and she is a solid conservative.

That sure sounds a heck of a lot more like the ***-clown we are stuck with in power right now than anyone else - ever.

“I see a Chris Christie or Rubio vs Clinton”

If Clinton runs, the only person who will be able to defeat her will be a woman. If the democrat candidate is a man, then we need a VERY conservative candidate, and it would be helpful it it were a woman.

I presume that by loose cannon, you mean Palin says what she thinks...

What makes you believe conservatives would vote for Christie or Rubio?

How many voted for her in ‘08, when she was not allowed to fully be herself (restrained by the RINO strategists in the McCain camp)?

Seems like she would be able to command that many again, plus a lot more, as the candidate at the top of the ticket and the ability to run the campaign her way.

She might not even want to run, but if she did I would support her.

2016 is now irrelevant. We lost the nation in 2012. It is over. 2016 won’t be an improvement. The GOPe will run Jeb Bush and he will win and will take us deeper into the socialist totalitarian gulag.

We had one chance to overturn Obamacare, we didn’t, and now nothing matters going forward. The race into socialist tyranny will go on unimpeded.

The fix is in. 2016 is irrelevant. It is meaninless. Enjoy the rest of your time on earth and pray for your offspring. They will need all your prayers. Freedom will die in America so be thankful you were mostly free during your lifetime. You are among the last of the free Americans.

Nothing can now stop the coming tyranny. 2016 is an illusion. It means nothing. The country is already doomed no matter what happens in 2016.
