Polls indicated that Romney was going to win the election. The economy is close to Great Depression era conditions, and unemployment is almost as high as when Obama entered office. Economic conditions became so dire after Obama took office it prompted the rise of an entire new movement, the Tea Party.
Presidents rarely win reelection when the economy is in the tank.
So how did Romney lose a race that numerous reputable polls and pundits predicted would be an easy win, based on historical patterns?
Massive voter fraud.

There are massive reports of criminal activity
(not mischief, not shenanigans, as many term the fraud- but CRIMINAL ACTIVITY) going on all over the U.S during the presidential election.
Reports of machines changing votes from Romney to Obama, eyewitness reports of Republican poll watchers who observed busloads of non-English speaking Somalians in Ohio being instructed to vote Obama- the list is endless.

Romney lost because of this, not any other reason.

I am still shocked and furious that Romney lost. This should have been a slam dunk and he screwed up. Just like McCain, Romney was too nice while Obama was the aggressive street-fighter. When will the GOP ever learn that you have to play dirty to win?

Romney should have explained the negative impacts of the debt, deficit spending and Obamacare. He should have hammered this toward the younger voters.

Why Romney never pummeled Obama over Benghazi I will never know.

The problem here is that conservatives cant get on the same page even when there is only one candidate left.

I have to disagree. Conservatives largely did get behind Romney. The problem was, Obama lost millions of voters from 2008 yet Romney was unable to pull them into his orbit - because IMO he presented them with a candidate that they just could not relate to. And it didn't have anything to do with free stuff with most swing voters, otherwise they would have stayed with Obama. Instead, Romney offered no compelling vision as to why he sought the presidency - because IMO he sought it for reasons that had nothing to do with core principles or values.

I supported Newt in my state’s primary and he lost. Though I’m not a huge fan of Romney I had no problem voting for him in November because the alternative is a nightmare and sadly the nightmare is going to continue and grow worse over the next four years. Conservatives are waiting for the next Reagan to show themselves and won’t vote for someone who doesn’t fit that high standard. I got news for you folks that person didn’t run for the GOP nomination in 2012. If Newt or Rick had been the nominee a bunch of you would have found faults with them too. Democrats always rally around their people and the GOP eats its own. No doubt in 2016 we’re going to have the same issues with a Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, etc. The Republican Party is not a perfect vehicle for conservative principles, far from it, but if you think going third party is the solution then be prepared to see Democratic presidents for the next fifty years.

There are many things I don’t know, and like you don’t understand why he went soft after the first debate. He had zero on the ropes, then did nothing to get the knock out punch he needed. Perhaps it was his mushy advisers - the same ones who were in the McCain camp. Why do they insist on using these useless retread losers?

Romney wasn’t hip or cool. SO what? I don’t care if my president is hip or cool. I want someone who has the smarts to turn this country around. Mitt had it - then lost it. He also avoided conservatives like the plague. He kept saying he was going to repeal obamacare, but never told the uninformed why or what was in the bill. Maybe he was afraid that if he did then obama would hit back with the fact that obamacare was based on romneycare - and it was. Most of us knew this would be a huge problem for Mitt.

Benghazi still remains a mystery. Why he didn’t punch him in the political face with this is beyond most of us. He got snookered by Candy Crowley and lost his nerve or something. I don’t know - all I know is we have 4 more years of a marxist in the WH because Romney and camp decided to take the “high” road and play nice. IT worked very well for McCain too.

Obama won and the market tanked again.

First of all, realize that what seems to be deep blue often is purple. I work two miles away from where Romney had his first PA rally. There are a lot more Republicans here than people in red states realize. The base was motivated.

But you have to do more than just win the base to win the Electoral College swing states. Was there voter fraud? Yes, and they were blatant about it. But Obama still came in, what, 6-8 million votes below 2008? Yet it appears that Romney, once all votes are in, might come in a million or so more votes than McCain in 2008, a very bad year for Republicans.

Romney failed to be a likeable candidate for the swing voters that drifted away from Obama. These people often vote on gut feelings. I have a relative who didn't vote. He thought it was completely bogus that Romney tried to claim being just like a regular American, when he has his own small business and fights to just make payroll. Other people I have talked to felt the same way.

Romney was a second-generation politician, like Gore and too many others nowadays. He showed more inclination to attack his primary opponents than Obama - typical of the GOP-E mindset. In the end, his vision for the presidency was that he wanted to be president. And I think a lot of swing voters realized that.
