Ted Cruz: If true believers be for us, who can be against us?

In 2007, journalist Michael Kelly wrote a devastating profile of Ted Kennedy. By then, Kennedy was a political lion in winter, but the article in GQ reinforced the worst instincts of some Americans about Kennedy – the drinker, the carouser, a fraud. Kelly wrote:

“Up close, the face is a shock. The skin has gone from red roses to gin blossoms. The tracery of burst capillaries shines faintly through the scaly scarlet patches that cover the bloated, mottled cheeks … The Chiclet teeth are the color of old piano keys. The eyes have yellowed too, and they are so bloodshot, it looks as if he’s been weeping.”

A new piece in The New Yorker takes on Ted Cruz. It is less reporting than observation, and it is a devastating piece of observation. Writer David Denby’s story starts like this:

“When Ted Cruz lies, he appears to be praying. His lips narrow, almost disappearing into his face, and his eyebrows shift abruptly, rising like a drawbridge on his forehead into matching acute angles. He attains an appearance of supplication, an earnest desire that men and women need to listen, as God surely listens.”

Backers of Cruz – and he has assembled a strong base of support among social and tea party conservatives in the GOP who see him as a principled advocate – will likely view the piece as further evidence of Cruz’s strong warnings about enemies out to get him. Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier dismissed the piece as “over-the-top, unsubstantive criticisms that would be expected from a theater critic dabbling in politics.” The freshman senator from Texas has made a splash by taking on his own party–and in the process, has built a network of supporters who feel they have been betrayed, not just by liberals but by moderates in the GOP....

They don't write articles like these about Chris Christie, Jeb Bush or Jon Huntsman. Ever wonder why?

Ohhhhh, they eventually do, once they win the nomination. Then the long knives come out.

I missed the part where Ted Cruz left a girlfriend to drown in a submerged car that Ted drove off a bridge.

So not having read the underlying New Yorker column, what evidence do they think they have that Ted Cruz is anything but a true believer?

Ted Cruz: If true believers be for us, who can be against us?

The Obamazombies...they be against us!

They hate us and they hate God and all the goodness he stands for.

This is no joke! We are under attack.

Didn’t Michael Kelly die in 2003, during the Iraq War?

The more the Liberals slander him, the more I like him.

I'll support either ticket in 2016: Palin/Cruz or Cruz/Palin.
