Joni Ernst, the Iowa state senator and Iraq War veteran, was standing in a barn in a purple flannel shirt and an unzipped vest. Beside her, various swine burrowed in the hog lot; two small pigs spooned; there was copious squealing. When Ernst, who grew up on a farm castrating hogs, opened her mouth to speak, she drew the inevitable connection between her upbringing and her current role as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate. When I get to Washington, Ill know how to cut pork, Ernst said, smiling. Title cards reinforced her credentials. (Joni Ernst: Mother. Soldier. Conservative.) Im Joni Ernst, and I approve this message because Washington is full of big spenders. Lets make em squeal.
The 30-second spot, titled Squeal, was part of a trilogy of ads for the candidate released earlier this year. In another, Ernst, enrobed in a biker jacket, rides a Harley-Davidson to a gun range. (Joni Ernst: Set Sights on Obamacare). In a third, titled Biscuits, the camera focuses on a mans hands as they add butter to flour and use molds to cut circles. When I was working fast food, I learned the key to a great biscuit is lots of fat, Ernst tells the camera. Problem is, Washington thinks the same thing about our budget.
Ernst is not the only candidate to have brought such a Capra-esque advertising strategy to this years midterm elections. Something Else Strategies, the media-consulting firm responsible for Squeal, also masterminded a widely noted spot for the Republican Mike McFadden, who is challenging Al Franken for his Senate seat in Minnesota. McFadden, a former college-football player who now coaches a youth team, recruited his players to appear in a Bad News Bears"-style spot in which they mess up handoffs....

BTW if there's anyone who personifies 'bumpkin' as in ignorant in their close minded provincialism its today's left.
Elitists have destroyed this country, not a single bumpkin played a part in that process.
I almost spit all over the computer screen—I thought he said “BLUMPKINization”. I wish he did, for some reason...
Other than former bumpkins like A. Lincoln, LBJ or H. Truman.
Hahahahaha!
This style of campaigning has been going on ever since Davy Crockett put on his coonskin hat and hit the hustings.
Now let’s hear his spoof of Black Democrats on the stump. That should be hillarious because many of them can’t speak English and their outrageous statements are ridiculous. But we’ll never see his witty take on that subject because they are a protected species.
Screw all the city elitists, seriously the ONLY reason people CAN live in cities is because of the “Bumpkin” Farmer and Rancher, the “Redneck” Lumber Jack and the Oil Rig Worker.
They have built their castle called the cities, but they forget the contributions of the peasants.
Bunch of arrogant morons who think themselves as gods in a field of the “masses”. Their Hubris will be their unmaking...

I wish Joni would put some of her hog working skills to the author of this drivel, but she would only find an empty sack I presume..
I recall the “angry white male” garbage after the pubbies won, and Peter Jennings saying, “Last night America threw a tantrum”.
I’d say Mr LEIBOVICH is many generations off the farm, and imagines himself well above those that are still there or still have a connection to the rural economy.
the irony is, every time the liberal urban elite pull off this “we’re smarter than everyone else” crap... they just annoy normal people and help republicans
if these guys were as smart as they think they are, they would shut the hell up about their contempt for everyone not in the urban areas of the country.
“Once in your life you need a Doctor, a Lawyer, a Policeman, and a Preacher; but every day, three times a day, you need a Farmer.”
Flyover country supports progressive plans every time it is tried. Maybe flyover country should stop supporting them with everything produced here.
With Obama the Master of Pork? And Hillary - that Businesses and Corporations don't make Jobs?
LOLARMAOOTF
That’s a good line Joanie, my next Senator.
She will be taking over Tom Harkin’s seat. !!!!!
And the Dems War on Women rears it’s ugly head!
I’ve got an idea for these urban elitists -
how about we restore the system where we run our lives, and they run theirs,
and never the twain shall meet.
Don’t forget the Clintons...They did arise from Arkansas after all...
