GOP Establishment Should Fear Cruz Run
commentarymagazine.com ^ | Dec. 11, 2014 | Jonathan S. Tobin

Posted on 12/11/2014 2:18:14 PM PST by PROCON

Yesterday, Senator Ted Cruz gave a major foreign-policy speech at the Heritage Foundation critiquing the disastrous nature of what he labeled as the “Obama-Clinton” approach to the subject. His desire to lay out his foreign-policy views in detail at such a venue as well as his focus on Clinton was a clear indication of something that is not exactly a secret: he’s planning on running for president in 2016. Members of his party’s establishment, which generally despises him as much as his fellow senators and the liberal media, do not take Cruz’s ambition too seriously. But as much as it seems unlikely that he will be taking the presidential oath at the Capitol in January 2017, that establishment should be a lot more afraid of Cruz than they seem to be. Anyone who thinks he will not be a formidable primary contender is paying more attention to the media caricature of Cruz than the facts.

Let’s start by conceding that Cruz’s well-earned image as a Senate bomb-thrower and his truculent public personality makes him a poor bet as a general-election candidate. Being a true believer is an asset in a primary but his uncompromising style won’t win many independent or crossover voters. Just as important, Cruz not only sounds ornery much of the time, he generally looks it too–and in the television era it’s far from clear that Americans will ever again elect someone who doesn’t strike them as being nice or personable. But let’s put those issues aside for a moment and consider Cruz’s chances of winning the Republican nomination in a context in which liberal media bias as well as the imperative of winning the center won’t be as decisive as they would be in a general election.

Cruz is probably ideally positioned to win early primary and caucus states and then rake in the cash that will follow those victories before he tries to best the other first-tier candidates in the contests that follow.

Yup, and if Sarah Palin accompanies him at his stump speeches, it certainly isn't going to hurt.

Last time, the GOP didn't get those voters, or, come to think of it, the conservatives they needed to win.

If you start with the knowledge that Jeffrey Tobin is an outspoken Progressive Liberal, you’re able to filter out the biased nonsense about the lack of electability of Senator Cruz and get down to whatever is left of his screed that is useful.

Just the way Reagan did. Tobin is a leftie hack but it is interesting that Rand seems to be the darling of that group.

I stand with Ted

Cruz missile ping ....

Classic "conventional wisdom" (sic) like the above throughout the article but at least some recognition of the force that is the Cruz '16 Missile ...

He needs to run as an independent though because the Republican party no longer exists, it’s an offshoot of the Treason party and they are going to do everything they can to sabotage his campaign like they did with Herman Cain. A Cruz/Palin ticket will obliterate any crap ticket the Treason party comes up with, people are-sick-to-death of Treason in this country and ALL ties have to be cut with these scumbags. The far leftists are a very small minority and can easily be destroyed if we just go independent. I wish to hell I was a billionaire, I would be spending every last penny to get the enemies of this country the hell out of Washington.

Me too. He's the only likely candidate I can get enthusiastic about.

On the other hand, if the GOPe gets their man I will likely sit out my first presidential election since 1980.

Two questions for my fellow Cruz fans:

1. Is he elgible?
2. Will he pull in the Hispanic vote?

Cruz and Palin.

Although if I could live like Palin, there is no way anyone could get me to move to DC.

For our sake, I hope she runs;

For her sake, I hope she does not.

If you’re going to make comparisons to 2012 candidates, imagine someone with the folksiness of Rick Perry (albeit in a Cuban Texan version), the passion of Santorum on populist and social conservative issues, the debating skill of Newt Gingrich, and the wonkish grasp of details of a Mitt Romney and you have a fair idea of what Cruz brings to the table.

‘his truculent public personality’

He had been talking about Cruz, but then he veered off briefly to talk about Obama.

Dang, I was just going to Ping you, you're quick :-)

You and others have convinced me that Cruz is our best bet for a true conservative in 2016.

I am not a rich man, but I will be contributing to him.

I'm with you. The next two years are going to be "interesting" for the GOP to say the least. "Interesting" in the so-called Chinese sense of the term - "May you live in interesting times"

“I stand with Cruz!”
***********************************************************

lormand, I stand with you for Cruz in 2016. Cruz is the ONLY potential candidate who is showing the necessary combination of integrity, courage and strategic thinking needed to save our Republic from falling into the abyss.

And, in SOLIDARITY, we should coalesce around Ted Cruz now as our constitutional conservative candidate for the Republican nominee for president in 2016. That way we can early on nip in the bud the old “split the conservative vote” tactics of the RINOs. If he is our nominee, HE WILL WIN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN 2016!
